Newsflash idiot, work can never be an "autonomous" activity since it will always be linked to necessity. This is why Marx never really went for the romantic idea of a return to "unalienated labor" and instead proposed a reduction of work altogether, thus making room for real freedom and autonomy. Do you even understand the marxist critique of capitalism? It's much harder than idiotic statements like technology = bad. Also: Idleness of course isn't freedom for the simple reason that it is negatively determined by work.

Beyond the political, I think there are some legitimate reasons to have some of the anprim skills and mindset.
Industrialization led to a massive boom in population - and sustaining that population requires extreme amount of energy and non-renewable resource extraction. An abundance of resources leads to growth - but if those resources cannot be replaced, a sharp decline is inevitable.
It is, essentially, a trap that populations (not just human) fall into.

freedom has more to do with how we relate to material conditions, rather than the material conditions themselves. How we self-determine and aim for the good within the framework we find ourselves in. The framework itself, the politics or economics or environmental limits don't cause us to lose our freedom, they might cause us to lose comfort, pleasure and health but those are separate from the question of freedom.
So whatever era you are born into has potentially the same amount of "freedom" possible
