I think Trump is a lock to win 2020 if he's not challenged by the Republicans. The browns and blacks will not vote 100% Dem as the Democrats want and a lot of them are caught in voter disenfranchisement nets which are being stepped up as we write. The fascist base Trump has riled up is very active and is winning the propaganda war. Barring a major catastrophe in the next 3 years there's nothing to suggest Trump will lose significant support. The fascists love the dogwhistles, normie conservatives love the fact that Trump is essentially a rubber stamp president with no real power, and single-issue conservatives will continue to vote on guns/abortion/muh taxes no matter how shitty the Republicans are.

There is no one in the Democratic Party that can claim with a straight face that they're not neoliberal. The Clintonist ideology has entrenched itself too deeply and so far the Dems have doubled down on losing. They don't care as long as they can keep their urban and regional strongholds and engage in the standard political graft and corruption.

Bernie is a non-issue because he will never be allowed to win, but even if Bernie somehow won the Dem primary, he would be backstabbed by the centrists and you'd see a propaganda campaign against Bernie like nothing ever before in American politics. Trump would be rehabilitated by the liberal media as their best defense against "socialism", while still drawing the fascist vote. Meanwhile Bernie would be close to 80, there is no possible substitute, and tbh Bernie would be pretty lousy as a president even at a good age. It was only the absolute awfulness of the current ruling class that makes him attractive at all; the Bushes and Clintons purged their respective parties of any pol with a modicum of actual talent to clear a path for the ruling dynasties.

Trump can't either any more, and that's a big problem for him as a lot of his 2016 support was based on his opposition to free trade, globalization and deindustrialization. Plus he can no longer claim to be the anti-war candidate, which again was key to his appeal last year.

How does Trump get re-elected in that scenario? I see some saying that he'll beat whatever the Dems manage to throw out, but how if he keeps chipping at his base? I'm almost so cynical as to think that he'll win by virtue of not being whatever the opposing candidate is.

If the economy is doing OK and Trump makes good use of his incumbency bonus he could well win. I just don't buy the idea that a neoliberal Dem can't win, seeing as Trump has given away most of his anti-neoliberal credentials.

Definitely agree, they'd rather continue losing while maintaining the status quo where they're the only other game in town. I mean hell, at the end of the day they're still rich and somewhat powerful within their regions - that's enough for them - besides, the corporate tax cuts and 1% tax cuts benefit them and their donors, so everyone wins if the Republicans win, and then they get to play butt-hurt victims in the media, which everyone in American politics seems to love to do.

I think this is true, but that there is also more at stake for the media at this point. Trump in office has been an absolute cash-cow for the mainstream media sources. Look at MSNBC for example - they can run Russia/Trump propaganda for 1/3rd of their 24hr airtime and it'll get killer rating despite being essentially baseless assertions rehashed over and over. No work, massive payout. I think the media moguls will want Trump to stick around for as long as possible, he's been the best thing for their bottom-line to come along in years. Besides, if Bernie did win, what scandals would they cover? There aren't going to be stupid-ass tweets every other day that need hours and hours of prime-time air-coverage to discuss.

So yeah, Trump, or someone like Trump, is probably going to be propped up by mass-media from now on. It's too profitable not to do.

Might depend on his popularity three years from now, but even if he maintains the lowish approval rating he has now I kinda' doubt that the republicans would primary him.

On the one hand, they'd have to be critical of the leader of their own party, which is a difficult kind of internal contradiction for a political organization to perform - and secondly, and perhaps more realistically, the power players in D.C. will/do already have Trump where they want him. He isn't going to rock their boat or drain their swamp - as mentioned earlier in the thread, most 'standard republicans' like him because he's essentially a rubber-stamp president for the political will of anyone who can buy the republicans. That's a comfy relationship for the powerful, and the media love/love-to-hate Trump more than any other politician, so I bet he'll be the one getting the best/most coverage around election time.

Oliver got his own show on HBO where he can do pretty much whatever he wants. They got Trevor Noah because he's black but not too black and is generally inoffensive. Stewart and Colbert were on a completely different level from the others in political comedy when it comes to charisma and political literacy. They also were in exactly the right place at exactly the right time (Comedy Central before it started playing it too safe, and during the Bush Era when the real bad shit was still mostly hidden and it was possible to pretend that Democrats and Republicans really were different).

I think Colbert genuinely got worse - in large part because a lot of his show relied on playing a conservative pundit. Also, I may be wrong, but I think liberalism at the start of his Late Show stint was genuinely even worse than it had been - idpol had gotten way out of hand, and then during the election the Dems postured themselves around being decidedly pro-establishment and Colbert had either been a stupidly unquestioning guy all along or he started pretending to have serious faith in government once Hillary did all that "America is already great" bullshit.
