i actually think the Irish gods are better potential for this kind of thing, especially among the ex-colonial western world where Irish heritage (real or affected) is very common and has an established history of muh oppreshun and resistance but without much in the way of modern ethnic baggage. they are also less well known in terms of popular culture, and as a reality of the early christianisation of the Irish people meaning less material survived - which means there is more leeway to creatively interpret and tell new stories.

On top of that, in terms of NRMs, they are mainly only popular with Wiccans and other explicitly "neo"-pagans, with only a very small and low-profile "reconstructionist" movement - so less chance of authenticityfags making waves.

You have the right basic idea, just that I don't agree with the conclusion. Myths and grand stories are very important for social movements, which is why rejecting postmodernism is so important. This is because postmodernism is in itself a rejection of the grand stories of earlier ideologies (such as fascism and communism), seeing the horrors they unleashed on the world. Looking st the early labor movement, specifically the anarchist influenced parts, they promoted the myth of a general strike. Obviously a general strike wasn't going to topple capitalism in one sweep, but it was important because it told the story of where the worker's power lies, who's the enemy and who's a comrade, who should own the factories and so on. So you don't necessarily have to appropriate myths about literal gods in order to build a movement's story.
