The thing is, the Maoist bit always seemed to me like more of a decoy to sort of fit in within the much more rationalist and modernist Eastern Bloc. I mean, Maoists weren't opposed to the urban proletariat or industrialization, it's just that the movement's initial base were mostly peasants which makes sense in a largely rural country. Pol Pot and his ilk, however, positively hated city-dwellers so much they coined the term "new people" to distinguish them from the idealized "old people" of the countryside. Add Khmer ethnonationalism into the mix, and you have no reason not to call their ideology Cambodian rural natïonal-socialism.
