You can't blame an everyman archetype on Shinji just like you can't blame harem anime.
Everything that followed Evangelion was a watered-down attempt to capitalize on its success, so all we got were watered down everymen as male leads. They would never be as tragic as Shinji, which is why they were so dissapointing and unrelatable because they were forgettable viewer insertion characters.
With so, so many beautiful love interests to choose from.
.. You can see how 70's-early 90's anime was influenced by heavy series like Evangelion, it surely left its mark but is probably not entirely responsible for weaksauce males, more that it was perceived that these empty characters would be more relatable to the male audience by major studios- leaving us with a new generation of terrible anime.

Flowers of Evil is about a boy in a small town with larger aspirations who, one day on a whim, steals the gym clothes of his crush. He instantly regrets his perverse actions but is seen by the most dislikeable girl in the class, who proceeds to blackmail him. I'm not a fancy shmancy, I like Dewar's white label because it's smooth as fuck.
I used to drink a lot more when I was younger and I tried just about everything; I especially loved dark or higher proof rum, but my stomach can't handle it very well anymore.
Gin and vodka too, tend to be rough; I had a scotch phase and have had some very pleasant experiences - I settled on Dewar's as my personal favourite (even if it's blended and not a single malt or from Islay - yes I know to pronounce it 'eye-ly' too) because of how smooth it goes down.
My choices today are based on reasoned experience, economic budgeting, and lack of personal need for peer evaluation.

Vodka I prefer 7up/Sprite + orange juice. All three together are nice. Occasional Bloody Caesar (clamato + hot sauce) or straight up Screwdriver / Harvey Wallbanger if I get some Galliano. (vanilla liqueur, add to a screwdriver to make it taste like a creamsicle)

Also yeah, Dewar's 12 is nice, it's still blended but the price is still reasonable and it darkens quite a bit. From what I've had I tend to like the smoother scotch whiskies, Aberlour 12 is nice- from Speyside. I find Islays a bit thick and smoky tasting, and a lot of others aren't quite as palatable. There's a reason I like a smooth scotch.
Canadian whisky is cheap and it burns, oh it burns. It's so bad. I mean, I like a decent rye or bourbon but anything from Alberta, be it whisky or vodka, is atrocious. Alberta is populated by American immigrants and oil companies, so their tastebuds are missing.
