I think it all started with people like Steve Jobs and Walt Disney. Walt Disney was, aside from an entertainer, also a land developer and a futurist who had some interest in engineering (he was also really into trains) and Steve Jobs was sort of the inverse where he was a tech guy who was arguably the first to give himself this artsy-humanitarian type image (he was probably inspired by The Beatles if his trip to India is anything to go by)
