Why do people do drugs?

A poor destitute person does drugs because of his terrible situation, but then a middle class suburban teen does drugs because of their empty suburban lives, and then rich assholes are always high on coke. So I guess there must be a lot of reasons, eh?

By and large the problem is the nihilism of late capitalism, i don't personally do drugs but how do you expect people to fix that? People want to feel good because life doesn't make them feel good.

Rather shallow and bleak perspectives here from people who, I suspect, have no first-hand experience with drugs. Some people simply enjoy drugs in the same way someone enjoys a good book or a movie; no need to moralize everything.

Drugs are neither simply means of escapism (though they can be used as such) nor a product of life circumstances of capitalism (they got used long before money was invented).

I do LSD once in a while. it used to be about the colors and wonderful imagery it made when i was younger, but now i do it to cope with bouts of depression.

It requires at least some mental fortitude to maintain oneself, and not become some weirdo all seeing eye hippy freak, but it allows one to per within their own minds and sometimes change whats been bothering them.

Once helped me get over a very messy breakup that i couldn't even tell anyone about and near drove me to suicidal depression. i tried to off myself a few times while drunk and failed, but after i did a absolutely massive dose of LSD it just put things in perspective, made the subjective objective and let me move on.

The effect also makes one see patterns, not just visually but in a very abstract way. its hard to explain, but its interesting and im glad ive discovered it.

You don't need to have problems to enjoy drugs.

It's like when you're trying to do a strenuous physical task, and you give up because you can't stand the discomfort, even though you know you should carry on. You choose short-term relief because you're too weak to grind through the pain/depression/grief.

There is a group of people who do it for different experiences too. As for the more classical users, fixing problems takes much more effort and people are not rational, so they pick the easy short-term "solution".

Really? weed is that expensive in you country…damn. Here is usually 10€ per gram…i buy 50€ and i have weed for one month. As for getting wasted i need to spend 30€ in one night to get drunk.

I could buy a handle of cheap vodka for 13 dollars and drink comfortably for the next two nights. Weed isnt expensive by any means in Chicago, roughly ten dollars a gram, just more expensive than booze.

In chitown i pay $40/8th and I can smoke that in two nights to get the same level of "high" as $10 worth of rum.

I'm guessing you smoke spliffs, which causes your stash to last longer. Most burgers pack bowls or bongs with no tobacco, or when we do smoke joints, it's all weed. Depending on how schwaggy or good your bud is, it's not impossible to go through a quarter in a day.
