What's wrong with open borders? Why shouldn't somebody be allowed to work in Texas just because they were born 5 miles over the border?

Nothing. However, "open borders" in recent times is just a way for Porky to drive down wages even more, exploit workers who are afraid of returning to their home, and creating artificial growth in housing markets. It also gets reactionaries angry which obscures the actual problems.

But closing borders doesn't prevent immigration, it only marginalizes the immigrants even more and so drives wages down even further. Additionally, why should we place the interests of the native workers over those of the immigrants?

Because native workers have impetus to stay when things go wrong. Also because we are the native workers, and we want to do whats best for us. In higher morality, its because this is a country our ancestors settled for us, and we should take care of it and pass it down to our children.

That would happen regardless, and does. Legal and illegal immigrants work for lower than legal wages because they don't need to support families, and they send most of their money back home.

A nation is an extended community and it has an interest in keeping certain people out, especially if those people come from places with wildly incompatible social organizations, which in turn leads to conflict.
