religion should be a personal issue. nü atheist fedora tippers created a backlash and made many otherwise more or less reasonable people turn towards fundamentalism. When Marx said 'religion is the opium of the people', he was alluding to opium's use as a painkiller. You are not going to ingratiate yourself to the people of the deep south by taking away their only source of hope, however illusory it might be.
