And yet their actual economic policy is basically socialist/socdem. What the hell is wrong with papists?

Catholicism is counterrevolutionary. Protestants are still cool.

Isn't this more or less no longer in effect as the decree was based on the 1917 Code of Canon law which was completely overturned by the 1983 Code of Canon law? Also, aren't decrees of the Holy Office not infallible, merley authorative and therefore may be brought into question?

Only certain, very specific things can be considered infallible and under certain conditions.

That may be part of it, but communism in encyclicals and church documents always refer to Marxism. Which is atheistic, historically totalitarian, and in many soviet countries: persecuted Christians. So it was hard then to be a consistent Marxist and Christian. Maybe now things are different, but I'm sure many Marxists here will attest to their incompatibility.

Protestantism is pure petite bourgeois ideology. We must stand with the Catholics against reformist imperialism.

Protestantism still does have obvious revolutionary potential, it helped bring capitalism into the world which was revolutionary. It just didn't take it's conclusions far enough imo

Pius was terrified of "bolshevism" and like most european porkies at the time had turned a blind eye to the rise of anti-communist reaction across Europe until suddenly Germany started attacking everyone. The primary goal of European involvement in WWII (as far as the liberals were concerned) was always to stop the USSR and then (maybe) Germany.
