Religion, Fedora Tipping, Philosophical Theism

I have recently noticed a resurgence of religiosity/theism on the internet. Not in the form of the classical internet creationist literalists, but rather with some online leftists. They are drifting towards philosophical theism. What does leftypol think of this?

I think that people are getting dumber over time so it's only natural that such resurgence would happen, I guess.

Religion has no place in leftist politics. There's a reason both the Bolsheviks and the anarchists in Catalonia blew churches up.

What is the reason comrade?

Explosions look cool.

Can you give an example? I would imagine the resurgence of religion online may be a reaction to the fedora tipping nu-atheist Bill Nye/Niel Degrasse Tyson movement.

Additionally, it would not surprise me at all that more people are embracing religion as a coping mechanism to deal with the horrible reality of capitalism. At this point, there is only so much Netflix and HFCS a prole can stomach before yearning for something "higher" to take their minds off their desperate economic situation.

I'm a deist with strong anti-clericalist tendencies.
Religion is a feature of the superstructure and can like a tool be used by reaction or by revolution. Organised religion as such I think is an enemy of socialism and should be removed from society though this is not a priority. I have a positive view of faith however although I expect this to diminish over time under socialism.

the banal positivism of the post cold war era, as represented by new atheists and liberal 'I f*cking love science' types was always pure ideology. the idea that politics could be eliminated and replaced by 'evidence based policies' and liberal rationality was core to the neo-positivist ethos.Capitalism and liberalism have their own implicit theologies. it is impossible to dispense altogether with the theological. 'rationalists' merely direct their religious impulses towards the fetishisation of science, technology and state ideology.

I somewhat agree, but there is a reason why Marx called religion the opium of the people, not opium for the people.

i.e. Religion is not a conspiracy created by the ruling class to rule them, but by the proles themselves.

Has to do with the emergence of the alt-right, and subsequent popularisation of Traditionalism and philosophical idealism. Their position is thoroughly subjectivist, and by rooting our ontology in the objective world (i.e. natural evolution), it can be disregarded.

One of the biggest fuckups in Communist states was its anti-clerical/anti-religious actions, and this history will be one of the biggest hurdles to the resurrection of Socialism once Capitalism collapses on itself. Remind the faithful of the inherent anti-capitalism of the faith and the importance of said faith, and now you have many into the fold of a better socialism.

Frankly there is no consistent atheistic philosophical position, other than the meme Egoism, the others rely on something intangible just like the religious do. It may have been "revolutionary" or genuinely edgy at one point in time, but there is literally no reason for fedora tipping in the 21st century

most of us still subscribe to a fair amount of the liberal religion

Religious institutions are just another form of state and present another artificial class division

religion = control and extortion based on lies, ignorance, and fear

traditions are for morons and Marxism is a materialism so spirituality and the supernatural ought to go out the window

God is still dead and no one cares tbh

some traditions have social utility

and religion is the opiate of the masses

Only to later down the road realize that religion is an important component in many people's lives, and to reinstitute a form of religiosity, also to fix relations with the orthodox church.

What is Stalinism other than a crypto-religion?
The dynamic moments of revolution do bring out a lot of anti-clericalism in people, but you can't deny that it gains a resurgence in one form or another.

no need to play devil's advocate, friend

christcucks aren't marxist and that's really O.K.

you can call patriotism religious – but – if it is (as in DPRK, with the armies, the regressive right, etc) – that is not a good thing

I would actually say nobody believes in God anymore. Even if they say they do. They don't actually believe there's a heaven, hell, etc.

God is still very much dead.

Come to America

the logos and perhaps more importantly the ethos of famous atheists has become too readily available online
Pastor Tom just can't compete with Sam "Drop a Nuke on Mecca" Harris
religion is on it's last legs

I would wager that half of people who signal that they are 'pro-religion' are actually secular reactionaries

Of course that is not a good thing. My god, I am, and have been for the majority of my life, an atheist.

But what is the point, I ask you, of all this antagonism towards religion, if when things return to normal, religion morphs into some other form of worship that might be even worse?

It's not a bad thing. Fedoras are the worst.

I'd rather be called a fedora by a jesusfag than be a jesusfag.

Sure, libertarians kinda hijacked the new atheist movement. But you can't be a free person as long as you're religious. Evict your spooks.

I WAS referring to America. Nobody believes in God anymore, not in America. No matter how much they say it, no matter how much they want to believe.

They understand.

Their is no God that can save them from the financial world we live in. They can only pray it gets better.

God has nothing to do with it. It is both a power structure that reinforces itself through fear of shaking up the usual, and a faith that all things have a purpose, all things can get better. Nothing is accidental and even if we don't make it in life, we will make it in death.

Jesus matters as much to these people as the knick knacks at a toy store, God a concept and not a being.

No, America is still a Godless country. No matter how much it screams otherwise

...

I believe in a kind of God, hell I think it's a nice thing to believe in. But at the same time I know it's not real. No God can save you.

Yeah. The problem of evil is pretty tough to reconcile.

that picture is great
saved

Oh please, it's just LARPing. I bet I've been in churches more often than faggots who post "DEUS VULT" online.

Buddha is better

Its only Christian leftism that is accepted tbh. If I mention my socialism with shia characteristics I'm shitposted to death

Religion is a disease that needs to be purged

What did Buddha ever do to you fam

Elaborate comrade

Religious Buddhism (and Daoism) are bad and wrong

hxc buddhists should be living out in the woods and graveyards with no property wandering around between cities and no one does that outside of S/SE asia

That's obviously unrealistic. I agree hard line Buddhism can do terrible, terrible things, but then again, so can Orthodox Christianity over the years.

I think Buddhism is one of the least harmful cultural beliefs out there that spread internationally.

Violence is a part of nature and it's to be expected

it's not unrealistic. Read the history of Theravada, Zen, and the other sects.

I live in the United States, near the desert. Am I to just walk into the desert? The city expands endlessly, and then the suburbs do.

I'm not going anywhere, I'm just going to be a student and move somewhere nice and quiet later.

Vipaśyanā is neat. Probably the most decent religion that exists. It is also the one that is the most compatible (although not entirely) with materialism.

In general though, it is good to read a broad array of religious texts, and pick out what is valuable from each one for your current situation (a bit like political theory).

my local IWW group often has meetings in a Church basement lol
