From a practical point of view the thaw made perfect sense. There was no way the Soviet bloc could compete with the U.S. without ruining themselves. If they hadn't have been wasting all their resources on military spending they might have actually been able to put more energy into consumer goods and fighting corruption. They might still be around today.
