Mao was cool for the same reason that Third World revolutionaries were cool in general, i.e. Leftists were disillusioned with the USSR, and needed new glorious socialist heroes to latch onto - until all the dumb shit that Mao got up to leaked into the press, at which point Western Maoism became as much of a joke as Western Stalinism

When Mao said this, he meant that this was the grueling nature of the school system that existed before, which crushed creativity and innovation with the Chinese youth. He encouraged students to take up their passions and start independent studies and encouraged students to help each other intellectually. Many quotes can be taken out of context. Additionally, you're glancing over all of Mao's contributions to the revolution and his theoretical contributions and just saying "lOL STUPID QUOTE BRO RAWR XDDD!!!! OWO"

It's basically a slightly-more-acceptable alternative to Western Nazism (i.e. only seriously followed by a handful of edgy misanthropes and outcasts)
