Bookchin was only a Marxist as a young boy because he was essentially raised by the American tankie movement and grew out of it relatively quickly, being a narcho for most of his adult life. Communalism might as well just be Anarcho-Communism and he mostly just seems to have renamed to avoid association with the idpol "left" and autists like Bob Black. Bookchin is incompatible with Marx because he rejects Marx's historical materialist autism of how we can never have any plans for the future and instead comes down on the utopian socialism side of things where you envision a society and then attempt to bring it about.
