The government is still supported by poor people, which thanks to past neoliberal politics make up 80% of the country (basically a self-caused problem).
Since the upper class opposition likes to throw their weight around, this may actually end up in civil war and US intervention.
In better times, the government were corrupt socdems who wanted a middle route. Now they have no money and Venezeualan opposition is too strong for them to do anything except try to hold on. The government has set up some co-ops, and I've heard they were arming loyalists.

The regional elections were supposed to be held in late 2016. The previous regional elections were in October 2004, November 2008, December 2010 and December 2012.
Today is May 7th, 2017 and everyone is saying that the bullshit constituent assembly is just yet another move to make people forget about elections.
