The meta shifts a lot. The only consistent thing is two healers, to spread out enemy priority and heal eachother if need be. Currently the meta is 3 tank, one dps, and two healers, because one of the healers, Ana, is so damn good at healing tanks quickly that she can easily keep three enormous health pools filled.

It used to be two DPS, two tank, two healer.

I've done a lot of things.

There's a one of each hero cap per team unless you're in an arcade game. There's no "pick/ban phase" in Overwatch where you see what the enemy team is picking, but you can change your hero any time that you're dead or in the spawn room.

It happens if you need to counter an enemy hero with a pick of your own, but every time you switch you also lose all charge you have on your ultimate. Those can take a couple minutes to charge and each round only lasts about ten minutes at most, so you have to decide if picking a better hero for the situation is worth sacrificing what charge you have.

In pro play there's a tendency to be "one comp" that is simply the best in every way at the time that both teams end up playing.

People try to shake stuff up with divers and snipers and builders and shit, but the game is usually won by the team with the most front-loaded damage, healing, and protection that sits in a big clump and only spreads out to avoid ults.

In higher level competitive it is. At lower levels people play what they're best at, or heroes with a lower skill ceiling, or even characters they just shouldn't play.

If you have good situational awareness you can dominate on out of meta heroes just fine. The game also provides a lot of heroes that don't require the ability to click on heads, but if you're really good at that the people with guns are obviously the ones that carry games.

more heroes is the only way to shake the meta up unfortunately. unless they make major changes to certain heroes. they need some with overlapping abilities so you don't ALWAYS need a rein or ALWAYS need a lucio. stuff like that. like if literally any other character ever had a speed boost type ability, lucio wouldn't have 200% pick rate in pro matches and 150% everywhere else.

Presumably he's a tank. Reaper and Genji are both DPS that excel at close range fights since one has shotguns and the other has a sword, but other than them close range is usually where tanks get dangerous. DPS heroes are more medium and long range threats.

We kind of have a bruiser with winston. He has a large health pool and a giant shield bubble, but he only deals damage if he dives onto enemies and his bubble isn't very good for protecting his team. So he's a tanky hero that wants to go for 1v1s and picks on squishies because he wins them every time, but if he dives into the enemy team, or goes against another tank, he usually loses.
