jrpg are not good

Are you even trying?
Also Chrono Trigger is meh at best.

Tales is trash.

JRPG copypasta

What's wrong with the remake(or remaster I don't fucking know)

Doesn't even come to my fucking mind but that's a good one.
Reminder that Pro Mode hack is a thing and it's very good.

All of them are good.
Try them all.

Haven't played the games yet, but from what I've gathered the remake added an unnecessary third act to the game that ruins the original's ending.

Fucking amerimuts

Is there a definitive list of actually good FPSes?

doom, quake, duke3d episodes 1 and 3. that's it, rest of the genre is shite

At least try.

It's the same problem as every recent atlus remake: add a marie (remake only plot central waifu) that completely fucks up the entire original story and cheapens it, in this case, by messing up the original game's absolutely perfect ending which tied everything up in the most satisfying possible way.

Symphonia, Vesperia and Abyss are the holy trinity of Tales of games and they are excellent games. Anything else is arguably skippable (3d tales wise)

Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Eternia are definitely worth playing.

He didn't even mention Fear or Lovely Planet.

The last Remnant

What do you think of Level-5's JRPGs? DQVIII is one of my favourite games ever, somehow I never got to play Dark Cloud, Rogue Galaxy, White Knight Chronicles or the Ni No Kuni games.

Attached: 9be4f912b77efcd372130ea60d94ba379eef430db00c03f9c6bf106c96494359.jpg (2123x1412, 1.87M)

Lovely planet was crap though.
Shots took too long to travel in a game where you had to be super precise while in movement.

The travel time was fine because it made leading your shots important but rewarding. The lack of a crosshair was the retarded part, regardless of whether it was an easy fix or not.

Well most people havent played Vesperia because for some reason, Bamco made it an xbox exclusive. There is absolutely no reason for that game not to be on other systems.

None of them play anything like DQ8. Their other games are all action rpgs.

Every Dragon Quest.
The Last Remnant.
Final Fantasy IX, VII, VI, III, V, X.
Chrono Trigger.

I feel like I could name more but I am taking a shit.

Is The Last Remnant worth 10 dollars or should I just find a magnet?

Why even ask? Always pirate first and then decide for yourself if you think it's worth money.

I liked these.

Attached: Arcadia.jpg (800x1126 252.75 KB, 414.98K)

Vagrant Story is a good one. Not quite a traditional JRPG, but more like a pseudo ARPG dungeon crawler. It is set in Ivalice like FFT and has the same kind of art style more or less. Good music and weapon and armor creation as well.

Attached: Vagrant-Story-02.jpg (480x272 56.48 KB, 24.38K)

Retconned into Ivalice but yeah.

Breath of Fire 3

Attached: BoF3-tiamat.jpg (406x510, 72.35K)

...

" … Vagrant Story, was not originally meant to be set in Ivalice, but it was retconned into the series through references …" Ehhh, that's the kind of shit that annoys me.

Only the beta version is Xbox exclusive.

fucking great game
10/10 imo

Crimson Shroud will probably be retconned into Ivalice eventually. I wouldn't mind.

Honestly, if you play Last Remnant, then you better be damn sure you play with a guide as well as have some genuine autism, otherwise you'll hate how obtuse the game is.

Look, as much as I love that game it is not a required JRPG to play, unless you really like SRPGs.

More or less obtuse than Resonance of Fate?
Because I beat that just fine.

My favorite game.
First time I finished this,
I didn't even master crafting and just went and combo'd every fucking monster with incremental low damage until I killed them,
consequently racking up high combos.

Next playthrough, I was older and able to understand the mechanics, and the game was way easier with crafting.
But honestly, if there's ever a remake or sequel down the road, the menu desperately needs QoL updates.
Fuck having to go back to the menu over and over just to change weapons.
Other than that, I really enjoyed the game.
10/10 together with MGS on the PS

I played LR twice without a guide, it's fine.

No, because there are practically no JRPGs. Few of the games called JRPGs are actual RPGs. Most of the trash the west makes and calls RPGs these days aren't RPGs.

quiet goon.

You're trying too hard to fit in friendo.

Holy shit, that game was bad. The plot was paint by numbers and predictable as fuck, the player made character was so tacked on it hurt, and the multiplayer was even more tacked on than that. I've played very few games where the class balance was so bad that it was detrimental to the single player experience, but WKC pulled it off, which is to say nothing of how badly it ruined multiplayer. If you weren't a two handed sword user or maybe a bow using healer, you could fuck off as far as online was concerned. The only thing the game had going for it was the above average choreography in the FMVs where fighting was involved. There's a reason Sony didn't put a cent of marketing into the release of the sequel despite hyping the original so hard and killed the series at two installments despite it originally being planned as a trilogy.

I can understand 4, 5, and 6, but why 1? It's slow, clunky, and other games perform what it set out to do much better.

I personally liked Breath of Fire 2 more, at least the retranslation, but I still like Breath of Fire 3 for what it is. It felt too muddled together for me, the childhood section especially felt like one very long continuous level.

Nope. JRPG is the bottom of the barrel of vidya genres (unless you're retarded enough to consider visual novels to be videogames, then they're slightly above those).

Don't play Ni No Kuni or White Knight Chronicles.
Dark cloud and Rogue Galaxy are good though

Always felt jrpg is a buzzword term , west is to insecure to compete with japan. So if someone lives in japan is it still called a jrpg?

The only retarded one in here is you, jackass.

No genre is inherently bad, prove me wrong.

Because there are none that let you observe the world as a Gondola. Also because most walking simulators are based in the real world with little to marvel at or no point in it's goal. It's the difference between walking through your neighborhood and hiking through the Swiss Alps.

Here ya go. Great list, user.

LSD Dream Emulator

Nice list. I would add Utawarerumono to the tactical side. If we're adding Dungeon RPGs, then Labyrinth of Touhou 2 and Dungeon Travelers 2 are fantastic. 7th Dragon series can go under turn based combat.

There is an obvious and clear line between a Japanese style RPG and a Western Style RPG.

For example, though the Souls games are made in Japan and have minor Japanese influences they are heavily influenced by western sstyle roleplayijg games. The souls games are definitely more WRPG than JRPG, despite the national origin of the games. You can say the same thing for a game like Battlechasers: Nightwar or Child of Light. Western RPG with heavy JRPG influences.

The terms do not describe the actual national origin of the games but a whole subset of design philosophies.

reminder that the only reason Persona 5 isn't widely considered good on Holla Forums is because it's popular

that doesn't typically get lumped in with jrpg's. people's definition of jrpg is hazy and real time shit usually throws people off.

Golden Sun and GS: The Lost Age.
Chrono Trigger is made perfectly, but can feel dated so some.
Mario RPG, Paper Mario 1 and 2.
Bravely Default, never have I heard a better soundtrack
I can barely recommend Earthbound, I played and finished it because cultural significance. But damn it's a dated.

yo dawg, i haven't played Ni No Kuni. What's wrong with it though?

I've yet to find another rpg like dqv where the premise is passing on the torch to the next generation.
Agarest war was shit and the western devs are too busy with tearing down the family structure because muh progress
Grand strategy games don't count

Excuse me?

There isn't. Its entirely in your head. Early JRPGs were just wizardry and ultima derivative.
Like what? Articulate yourself more than not at all.

Long story short. Give up on JRPGs after Compile Heart made their comeback.So.. Shortly after 2010~2012 is the buffer for good JRPGs.While 2013~2014 was when the fun effectively died and cut and paste, endless grinding nonsense started to flood the market.

I just don't do not know why the Return of Idea Factor and Compile Heart to the mainstream triggered such a downfall of quality in ALL JRPGs. Very few NEW jrpgs are even worth your time or interest and it's not all that ironic when you consider that Dragon Ball Fusions is one of them.

Xenoblade is shit.

XCX is a mess and I can understand you don't like XC2 since it's a huge thematic departure from the series, but you don't get to talk shit about XC1. You're an appallingly disgusting pleb and should kill yourself at the earliest possible time.

Attached: 1443709071491.png (293x341, 142.5K)

funny way to say 12
Also SO3 is worth playing for the gameplay

Fuck both of you.
X was mint.

Rogue Galaxy is the best game that no one talks about.

Because its one of those JRPGs that never received a sequel or any kind of continuation. It always happens with those kind of games. If JRPG has only one game in line, its usually disregarded.

It's because of the last 4th of the game.
1/4th, excellent.
2/4th, excellent
3/4th, interesting until those Star Jaster only enemies start appearing, shoehorning into making sure he's always in your fucking party.
4/4th, Jesus Christ they ran out of money.

Is Radiant Historia any good?

I always feel like in threads like this, people should just list a couple of games and give a short description of what makes them good, instead of just posting a long list of games with no further explanation.

Attached: 417345639276537 mass effect cover.jpg (670x958, 471.32K)

Its pretty good.
The DS version has better art.

Play DS version. 3DS version fucks up story by shoving in a magical space waifu.

dammit I just got the Japanese version in the mail.

That's what you get for not properly researching your games user.

It's a DS game. You should have a flashcard or emulator for it by now.
Seriously, there's no reason to actually pay for games on the current gen.
PS3 and 4 are both jailbroken. Switch is almost there and doesn't have much going on for it now anyway. Every XBO game is on PC. Vita and 3DS are totally hacked.

There's an option before the game starts to ignore the new stuff until NG+. The original portraits are (((DLC))), so RIP dyke haircut
archive.is/6pjXG

I'm assuming he bought it by choice rather than necessity

Then he deserves bully.

Dragonball Fusions was a breath of fresh air, I'll be honest.

Fucking plebs all of you

I did not research it mainly because I thought it was kinda like the Index days of Atlus when they would release new ports for the handhelds just to make more money for development of a new game. Or I'm kinda convinced of it, since they've got like 2 big tittle games that they are developing one being a mainline smt and the other is that re-fantasy game.

I started on the never played the game before mode. SO hopefully that is the sweet spot, if not I'm gonna waste some money on the DS version when the 20th comes.

I am one of those guys that likes to play on original hardware when given the choice.
Also when it comes to jailbroken stuff I'm like more power to you, I have money to spend and when I want a game I will pay for it.

It's the same thing when it comes to PSP games, I buy a copy and play it.

I'm playing FF7 for the first time ever.
What am i in for?

Xenoblade Chronicles looks really cool. Is it too late to get a Wii U and would it be worth it just for one game?

It is on 3DS and can also be emulated well on PC.

Attached: shinobu.png (1920x1080, 732.18K)

Everything on Super Nintendo/SFC, most of the stuff on Playstation, Some of the stuff on PS2/DS.

You're thinking of Xenoblade 1 from the Wii.

JRPG isn't a real genre, the correct phrase for what people mean by JRPG is console RPG. WRPG also doesn't exist, it's just computer RPG. Journalists struck the phrases years ago and people stopped using them just by virtue of being drowned out by the platforms granted to journalists.

Except nowadays when they're all just action rpgs.

That is correct. I'm thinking of Xenoblade Chronicles, which is available for the Wii, Wii U Virtual Console, and New 3DS. If user was referring to Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Wii U, then no, it isn't worth getting a Wii U for.

it's all the style, and the names describe them better and more universally. Gives you more of an expectation of the game play too. I think its better to use more exact terms for games these days, like when describing a modern bioware game.

Oh yeah, I'm retarded. Confused Chronicles with X.

Both are somewhat like a PS2-era interpretation of Actraiser; a hybrid of ARPG and town builder. Go into dungeons, whack monsters, make sure your weapons don't break in the process, find magical bits that you use to rebuild the town that sits above the dungeon. Weapon upgrading is also a big part of both games; your weapons receive more improvements that your player character does. It works a little differently in 1 than in 2, so I'll explain that below.

Dark Cloud 1 is alright. Very rough, like you'd expect from a game very early into a console's life, but fun.

Weapon upgrading works like this:
-Killed monsters drop blue grains; gain enough and it levels up.
-Every level, you have between one to three (some weapons might have more?) slots that you fit a gem into to improve stats.
-Once stats improve enough, you can upgrade the weapon.

Probably the better of the two; if you only play one, make it 2. Visually more polished, more optional content, like the Spheda game (golf played in dungeons, which will drive you up the absolute goddamn wall), fishing and fish raising/racing, building and customizing a robot that one of the player characters pilots, obtaining and upgrading monster transformations utilized by the other player character, photography, where you take pictures to get ideas that you combine to make weapons, healing items, robot parts, and a lot more.

Weapons upgrade in the following way:
-Killed monsters drop magic grains; grab enough grains to level it up
-Leveling up gives you Synth Points; a sort of currency that is expended when you bind a Spectrumized item to the weapon. Binding these to a weapon increases its stats and can grant status effects.
-Spectrumizing is where you take an item (a weapon, fish, food, building parts, anything really) and reduce it to its essence. The stronger the item was, the better the stat gains it will give, but the more Synth Points it will expend to bind.
-Once a weapon has gained enough levels & stats, it can be upgraded to a whole new type of weapon. Weapon upgrades can sometimes be a choice between two or more possible outcomes.

Essentially a spiritual sequel to the Dark Cloud games. You see a lot of parallels; ARPG gameplay with a lot of oddball side content. Where Dark Cloud had Georama (the town building), Rogue Galaxy has the Factory. You use it to make items, but this isn't the typical lazy 'go to menu, smash item to other item, boom, done' thing usually found in crafting systems. The Factory is a physical space that must be populated with machines that break down different components into their essentials, and then combine them. Here's the catch; these mechanisms all take time to do this, and different amounts of time. For example, when working with metals, you need a smelter, a form presser, and a cooler to end up with the desired shape. You have to connect conveyor belts between these machines so that components all reach the combining mechanisms at the same time, and later recipes can get very complex.

Rogue Galaxy has weapon upgrading, but it's fairly simple when compared with Dark Cloud; you kill monsters with a weapon to 'season' it, like you'd season a cast iron pan through use. You then give two of the same class of weapon (pistol with pistol, dagger with dagger) to this mutated frog that travels with you, and if he things they go well together, he eats them up and spits out a new, more powerful weapon.

Rogue Galaxy also has:

Insectron
A cross between Pokemon and chess where you go out into the wild to capture bugs in cages, raise them, fight them, breed them, and then build a team for the Insectron matches.

Revelation Flow
Will feel VERY familiar to the License Board from FF12, although here it only bestows abilities and stat up, and does not control what weapons you can equip.

Bounties
Again, if you've played FF12, this will feel familiar. Go out, find powerful hidden bosses for extra rewards.

Actually, quite a lot of RG feels like FF12, even story elements. Though that's likely more because they both take inspiration, to put it diplomatically, from common sources.

Bunny

...

DQ 1 and FF 1 should never be on the same list, as DQ1 was far better. Saga Frontier should be on that list.

DQ1:
-Solo quest
-No character development choices, beyond equipment.
-Have to use the menu to use stairs
-Constant treadmill of grinding so you're strong enough to grind elsewhere.
-Every dungeon looks the same
-Darkness mechanic is just tedious.
-Plot of defeat the dragon emperor, the extent of it being told to go defeat the dragon emperor.

FF1:
- Four character party, you get to choose composition.
- Can choose which spells your casters learn
- Can actually tell dungeons apart just by looking at them.
- Combat FAR more interesting with actual party dynamics and character classes.
- A bad spot of grindan around Elftown, but otherwise not too bad.
- Much better art for monsters (IMO)
- Actually memorable bosses.
- Not much of a plot, but at least they tried.

The fuck you talkin' about?
I love a good DQ1 run, but it's nowhere near what FF1 is. DQ3 or 4 compared to FF1 is a m uch better comparison.

Far and away the best JRPG of all time.

Well, FF1 was a clone of DQ3, so it's not a fair comparison or a valid one by any measure

THE WEABOO COMMUNITY

Attached: aj-styles-1.jpg (300x300, 20.3K)

To be fair DQ3 was more advanced than FF1, it had the ability to swap party members.

Attached: It's a clone even if it came out first.png (547x515, 145K)

Technically what you name the character can affect your stats.

Just started Treasure of the Rudras. What am I in for?

That's a good summary, user. I like it.
I'll admit that I'm not a fan of weapon breaking in Dark Cloud games but I can't talk about it until I try it out for myself.
As for Rogue Galaxy, I played it recently. It's a little unusual but not necessarily a bad thing. The major gripe for me so far is how clunky the Factory is. I get the impression that it could be better with a mouse rather than a PS2 controller. That said though, Factory is interesting to mess around with and adding machines/hooking up with wires, it's unique.

m8 what are you thinking.

...

Two and nine are trash.
As is seven. Seriously. Fuck that game.

All of history compressed into twelve or so hours.

MGQ Paradox is a fairly solid game. If it weren't for the tits everywhere you could play it without even thinking about the porn. The biggest problem is that for the system to shine, you need to grind, and you need to grind both hard and smart. It is less about the level and more about the jobs, and the game is decidedly stingy about job exp for far longer than it feels like it should be.

I should probably have explained that a little further.
When weapons break, they're gone FOREVER. Never go into dungeons without lots of Weapon Repair Powers, and possibly Auto-Repair Powders in one of your three Active Item Slots. This becomes crucial in later dungeon levels where you will find that you've been benefited/impaired in some way. One of these ways is weapons breaking faster. These mutators are not randomized, thankfully; only certain levels have an effect, and it will always be the same, even across different playthroughs

When weapons break, you can't use them until you repair them, but they're not lost for good. They do lose a little of their maximum WHP (Weapon HP), so the next time they break, it will happen a little quicker. WHP is one of the stats that improves as you upgrade a weapon, so even if you've broken a weapon a few times, it's not a lost cause.

Rogue Galaxy does not have weapon durability.

Isn't Rogue Galaxy the game that has the really hot girl who shits into a sock and throws it at the enemy for some kind of debuff poisoning attack?

Uhhh, no.
To get that ability, you have to use an item in Kisala's Revelation Flow (see ) called the Captain's Sock. The Captain is Captain Dorgengoa, Kisala's father.

Attached: Rg-dorgengoa.jpg (600x850, 96.27K)

???

I'd like to see an RPG where attacks are given verbose descriptions and minimal animations. Imagine a fight in the NES version of Final Fantasy I where a Fighter still walks forward a few steps and wags his sword around but, instead of a text box saying "user attacks. Critical hit." it says "user lunges forward at the IMP and cleaves its body straight down the middle. The IMP's body splits apart and its entrails spill on the ground like spaghetti. Its eyes are eternally glazed over in amazement and terror."

just like, play table top.

Except BoF6
Doesn't that jump back and forth between shit and good a lot?
You were right when you said nothing after 9

Biggest flaw is the auto generated dungeons; just a couple rooms in and you'll already be tired of the area.

Attached: Dark Cloud 2 Spheda tutorial.webm (480x332, 1.78M)

Dwarf fortress?

Some MUDs do this.

Earthbound is still my favorite game to this day.

Attached: 1463920732945.png (1440x900, 45.13K)

How are the Persona games, anyway?

1 is good, 2 part 1 and 2 part 2 are very good, and 3 and 4 can be either good or bad depending on how much of weeb you are and how well you can tolerate the dating/friend sim elements that make up 80% of the game. I haven't played 5 but I've heard it's basically the same as 3 and 4, but slightly better.

Sure here it is:

thats a fuckin solid choice. for me its tied between earthbound and tales of phantastia, far as the SNES goes.

no SNES rpgs ever did much for me. Was disappointed with chrono trigger, FF6 was the worst one I've played to completion, and earthbound while neat has better alternatives in battle system, style, and even in red hat striped t-shirt bike riding protagonists.

Attached: gpgd.jpg (1280x720, 66.34K)

If you like Final Fantasy style games you deserve to be locked up in an insane asylum or gassed. It's like D&D without the sensible enemy placement, depth, tactics, interesting storylines. You mash 1 button for 200 hours in very slow combat and sometimes you select magic when there's a boss battle every 25 hours.

was 6 the one with cecil or tera?

Shit.

Fuck off anti-Japanese D&C shill.

Wouldn't that cause a big mess in a large fight though?

This is the answer to all problems with RPG vidya.

Nice bait, totally disingenuous, well done :^)

I would unironically and instantly buy a comfy gondola walking sim.

Good, good. Fuck NISA for taking over Ys 8.

Fucking Artdink should translate and release them on GoG.com. It's shame almost nobody played them.

I will be making a Kickstarter for Butt Citizen.

Get out.

I just started Brave Soul. Pretty good for an H-JRPG. Only a few hours in, but I like it a lot more than Knights of Xentar and Cobra Mission.

Not only do you have retarded opinions, but you're not even funny.

Attached: one winged rape time.jpg (837x700, 63.38K)

That's a CRPG made in japan, not JRPG.

That makes it a JCRPG.

That makes no fucking sense. JRPGs aren't really RPGs, so why is an acutal CRPG from Japan a JCRPG? Fucking genre autists can never decide on sensical naming conventions.

What's the longest sigle with RPG in ? I have in mind 'TMMORPG'

Never finished this when I was younger. A while back I emulated it and boy did I abuse the shit out of fast forward dungeons. I also couldn't help my self from save stating before the start of each spheda because it's time consuming to clear the dungeon again just for another chance and the RNG of the dungeons can really fuck you up. A few days after finishing the game, a remaster was added to the PlayStation store.

its called a console rpg, not a jrpg.

Is Radiata Stories considered to be "good"?

I loved how the towns people had their own schedule back then.

Attached: 255599.jpg (448x640, 132.99K)

Radiata Stories is very good. I've never played a game that did towns, or rather one town, as well as it.

AJ is right you know

Chrono Trigger
Xenoblade 1 and maybe Xenogears
TWEWY
SMT (probably Strange Journey)
That's it

Also some Mario ones (Paper 2 and M&L1 mostly) and Undertale

Nakamura is the gay community

she smoked weed lol

No, it's not, given that no one calls it that.

Well it's true that Japan only has consoles but recently they've started coming to Steam so now they're on PC too. I don't know if sales have been good enough to continue that since apparently automata sold like shit (less than 1 mil) but there you go.

It sold enough to be profitable, that's all that matters.

given that nobody knows what a jrpg is and its name is self contradictory you should start.

console rpgs can be on PC too. FF7 was released on PC in 1998. It refers to the style, not the platform. a computer rpg could also exist on console and I think there were some recent examples that were ported there.

How was that hard?

Figured this might be the most appropriate place to mention this at present:
ateliertraduction.forumactif.org/t31-release-of-the-atelier-marie-elie-s-english-patch-on-ps2

Attached: title.jpg (640x480, 138.73K)

it just doesn't add up. Use console RPG.

Attached: ClipboardImage.png (1100x1414, 1.7M)

Holy fuck, never thought these would be translated. Any idea how strict the time limit is and how obscure progression can be? If it's Rorona tier I'm not jumping in blind.

You're upset because you wasted all that time playing shitty games.

You're being intentionally retarded and I don't know why.

i wanted the gba or the gbc versions

Phantasy Star 3 does this, but its a pretty shit game.

There are JRPGs not on console but there are no JRPGs not from Japan ergo JRPG.

i'm ashamed to admit i was baited in to arguing whether earthbound was a jrpg or not at one point. arguing over definitions just hits my autism in all the right places but i feel dirty the next day

You're entirely right. Most of japanese rpgs are based on western games before those acquired non-linear story progression elements and were all about party dice rolls.

Attached: Wizardry 6.jpeg (1152x720 161.37 KB, 229.72K)

I wouldn't think that'd be the case since retards on Holla Forums spammed the desktop thread meme for a good decade out of pure memed spite for the game.

These are sequels to the PSX Marie and Elie games, so it wouldn't make sense to have started with them.

Marie is simple in all aspects, while Elie is a more complicated game with obscure requirements for several events and endings. Take that as you will.

It's not like he knew that, he's just virtue signaling like a fucking moron.

JRPGs shot off into their own genre though.

Wolfenstein 3D
Doom 1,2, Final Doom
Descent 1,2
System Shock 1,2
Heretic, Hexen
Marathon Trilogy
Duke Nukem 3D (pirate Megaton Edition and play it with eduke32), Shadow Warrior, Blood
Quake 1,2,3
Dark Forces, Dark Forces: Jedi Knight
Unreal, Unreal Tournament
Half-Life, Half-Life: OpFor

>FF1-10 (FF7 is especially good if you're an environmentalist/leftist like me)

JRPG combat isn't a real thing, as dark souls is a JRPG as is final fantasy, as is panzer dragoon saga and SD snatcher, and I wish you luck in finding how these games have the same combat. Your position depends on it, otherwise you have no argument.

And every other version is Japanese only.

This reminds me of Ultima.

The chad good SMT games poster

On the off chance you somehow aren't aware, the extended PS3 version's been fantranslated for a few years now, and PS3s themselves are less restrictive to CFW than they used to be (no longer requiring hard 3.55).
talesofvesperia.net

How' s the translation though?

Actually no other FF has both job class selection and those job classes being permanently set for the duration of the game, instead either having set jobs (or pseudo jobs) or a job system that allows for freely changing classes as often as the player wishes.

Job classes are great. Variable job class systems are overrated trash for casuals.

BoF2 is completely nonsensical for 2/3rds of the game regardless of translation.

So are 3 and 4. In 3, everything before you leave Wyndia as a kid and before leaving the first continent as an adult is random ass filler, and in 4 pretty much everything Ryu does until the endless show up in person is just filler.

I never played more than an hour of 3, though not because of disliking it, but due to not owning it an not investing time into going back to it. I got 4 from the PS store on my ps3 but never finished it. BoF1 and 2 are the only BoF games I have ever played to completion, and BoF1 is still my favorite, but that was mostly due to it being one of the first RPGs I played.

BoF2 is better in a lot of ways, but even if BoF1's story is retardedly simplistic, BoF2's story takes so long to get off the ground it's hard to keep interest. 4 suffered similarly in this aspect, and I found myself wishing I could play as Fou-lou for the entirety of the game.

You and pretty much everyone else. You can choose to side with him at the end and the game ends with a final battle against your party.

This.

Pretty solid if you ask me. Seems like it borrows from the original 360 script for lines outright shared by both the 360 and PS3 JP scripts, and if memory serves, outside of typos the English 360 script wasn't noted as being bad (and I'm fairly sure the fan-translation fixed those typos). Obviously though there's plenty of newly translated text as the PS3 version added a lot of content, and due to the addition of Patty and Flynn to various areas, even the scripts in shared areas/scenes needed new translation here and there. Point being, I'm almost done playing through the PS3 version myself and it seems pretty competently handled, but it's also been years since I played the 360 version. It's more or less a hybrid translation: Reusing what worked prior, but combing over it for what needed fixes/new translation.

It should be noted though that there were some changes in the official English script made for use with the English dub to carry over effects, which don't work as English text + JP dub (which the fan-translation uses, between the PS3 version's audio being Japanese anyhow and there being a lot of lines that wouldn't have English voicing if the English dub had been patched in). Yeager, for example, throws occasional English works and lines into his normal moonspeak in the JP audio. Due to the other characters noting he speaks oddly (Judith speculating it's a language dead to the present world), this effect wouldn't be carried over to the English script left as-is. The official English script and dub changed those words/lines to German (complete with voiced German accent), fitting his character's name, to keep the effect intact. This creates a conundrum for the fan-translation as to how to handle it, as the screen-text and JP audio create a mismatch, but ultimately the official change was left to keep the effect of him feeling foreign to the cast.

Should also be noted that there is no text translation for lines that didn't have screen-text to begin with (barring perhaps FMVs as those can have the video files hard-subbed, but I forget if those had native subbing in the English 360 version as well). This means combat banter, spell incantations, win quotes, and level/skill ups are left as Japanese audio only.

BoF3 did finally make its way to the PSN out here, but for whatever reason Capcom only cleared the previously JP/PAL only PSP port to get up there as opposed the PS1 original, thus the PSN version of game is only usable with PSPs and Vitas.

What's wrong with 9?

And will we get 11 soon?

Shadow Hearts was neat for the combat. Localization was trash. I've read to skip Covenant, and go straight to From the New World.

Attached: shadow hearts wall.jpg (1920x1080, 125.56K)

That's backwards. Play finish the first game, then play Covenant, skip New World unless you really like the series. It's not a bad game and is one of the best looking PS2 games (other being VP: Silmeria) but the story is a massive step down from the first two.

Also 1's voice acting is fucking old 4kids tier inadvertantly funny. The entire sea witch story segment is just fantastically awkwardly bad.

Also some nice music.

Could you elaborate? I mean, beyond finding out what happens to Alice and Yuri after the first game, I only know that the game is crap.

Also, I would recommend the Evolution series, but I can't simply due to nostalgia for the sequel. I'm waiting for someone to undub the GameCube combo.

Anyone who told you Covenant is crap is either straight up retarded or lying.

Well? Can you tell me how it's not?

Gondola version.

From the New World was always meant to be a side game, not the Shadow Hearts III Nautilus had wanted to make (while the western release of Shadow Hearts II dropped the numeral in favor of a subtitle, FtNW was "Shadow Hearts: From the New World" even in Japan rather than "Shadow Hearts III"). Unfortunately Aruze dissolved the team before they could make more games. I would expect that, had it been allowed to happen, it would have at least used FtNW's combat tweaks (a high point for that game) as a base at the very least, and perhaps been more back to the vibe of Covenant or even SH1 (given the game was apparently going to be a prequel).

Having played and loved the whole series, can you tell us why you have been led to assume Covenant is shit? I'm just asking since it's generally the best received amongst series fans (western ones, anyhow).

Attached: NDE - Twilight Street.mp4 (400x224, 13.95M)

I haven't even finished the first yet. I didn't pick up this one key item to obtain the final summon, now I'm kicking myself in realization that I have to start all over from the beginning now.

I don't think you'll get a proper answer by dodging my question, and making preempted accusations. All I want is for you and aba550 to lay out some key elements from the game that you think make it good, much like the Dark Cloud 2 user that posted here before. Did you think that maybe I want you to change my mind?

Attached: mark hamill eating cauliflower.gif (460x426, 654.91K)

I am not dodging the question. I'm wanting to know why you have been led to think it is shit (what aspects, etc) in the first place, to better address specifics in detail. All you've done thus far is say "I've know it's shit" without speaking as to what you assume to know that would make it shit.

Then let me rephrase and say that I've only heard it was shit. That's all I know, and pulling the Kyle Hyde act on me isn't gonna help you villainize me further.

No JRPG for any Japanese i.e. good RPG and WRPG for western ones makes perfect sense.

/thread

Q is fun but that's because EO is the only good jrpg series to start after 2000.

Attached: kmyutnhjrbgdvf.png (1730x910, 11.16K)

If you liked the combat in the first game you will definitely think the second is an improvement. It adds shaped AOEs, positioning elements, combo attacks, several types of guarding, an extra character in battle, a ton of party members, customizable magic slots in all non-Harmonixer (monster fusion) characters. Game moves from prerendered backgrounds to full 3D, models get much better (as the original started as a PSX game). Story is slightly more serious but still manages to be funnier than the original man festival. Also it manages to avoid 99% of stereotypical JRPG tropes, especially in the second disc.

The third game is a mechanical improvement (stock gauges are better than positional combos) but the story and cast are not nearly as good.

The game has a new game plus

It isn't? Where did you hear this? It's filled to the brim with content, it's well-acted, it's fun to play, it's got great characters.

Like, I have criticisms about Covenant, but I would still highly recommend it.

That's a shame, the Seraphic Radiance scene is pretty much the game's emotional climax, if you don't get the bad/pretimeloop canon ending.

user might be totally retarded and be conflating Shadow Hearts 2 with Kingdom Hearts 2.

This.

Bumping with best random battle theme.

I'd like to hear them, actually.

It's been fucking forever since I last played, so my memories on the exact problems are a little hazy, but…

>Kato makes for a terrible fucking final boss

I'd have to replay the game again to refresh my thoughts.

Honestly, if you want to break the game, you use the second Earth Fusion and the Spikes accessories, which makes you take 1 damage per hit as long as you have SP.
> makes for a terrible fucking final boss
I really disagree with this, but can understand why people would feel that way.

I'm here to help you OP:

Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia. If you really liked those three and you're still hungry, go for Xillia. If you liked Xillia, Xillia 2 has better gameplay, but a shit story. Berseria if you still want more. Anything else is passable 3D wise
Phantasia, Eternia, Destiny I and Destiny II, anything else is passable. Hearts R is good if you can stomach the shit translation. Download the legendia OST and pretend you played it, because the OST is the only good thing.

Start with 1 so you appreciate the games' growth over the ages
Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls (GBA FFI and II remake)is a good way to play I and II
Then 4,5, 6. The DS remake of 4 has a more challenging difficulty and a more elaborate gameplay. You could stop here, but if you want more
7, 9, 10. are worth playing. 10 is fast turn based, and has lots of autism post content grind. X-2 has great gameplay but shit story. anything after this is not worth it. 7 and 9 have a slightly slow paced gameplay. Emulate them all for best experience.
If you're still hungry and liked the series, play III, II, 8 and 12. Don't bother with anything after 12.

Play them all, they're all great. Your least priority is 7. Play mainline before any spinoffs.

Chrono Trigger
Terranigma (ARPG)
Secret of Mana (ARPG) and Seiken Densetsu III
Live a Live
If you solely care about gameplay, and if you have the discipline not to spoil yourself the mantras, Treasure of the Rudras
7th Saga. Don't bother with mystic ark. I guess you can play it if you REALLY enjoyed 7th saga, but mystic ark is easy as fuck, on top of that a mess to go through (very cryptic on progressing through main story). You can skip mystic ark, but it has a fun gameplay and good ost. It's passable though.
Super Mario RPG
Lufia II: Rise of the sinistrals
The Jojo bizarre adventure SNES RPG (you can beat it in one afternoon)
Earthbound
illusion of gaia (ARPG)
Motherfucking E.V.O (ARPG)
Bahamut Lagoon
FF: Mystic Quest
SMT I and II (play II first, I is harder to digest)

All except 6. You can stop at 4, really. 3 and 4 are best.

My little 2 cents.

Currently in Terranigma's endgame, is there a way to make the tourism girls talk beyond lacking information of other towns? Have expanded all the towns to max and give the photos to them.

Anyone?

The factory in Rogue Galaxy was the most comfy experience I have ever had in a game and I wished there was more things to make in. I've tried games with similar mechanics, but they just don't scratch that itch.
