BioShock 2 was a great game that improved upon everything from the original and had a great expansion pack in Minerva's Den, which is a damn shame since almost no one played it. Infinite was a retarded fucking mess that stole half its ideas from 2 but did all of them infinitely worse: the story is utter nonsense, the gunplay is shit, the levels are shit, the ending is shit, practically everything besides the sound design and some of the graphics are pure dogshit.

It was fucking terrible. Gameplay is a weird mishmash of design choices that actively work against each other. You buy upgrades for individual weapons, but ammo is given out in a way that encourages you to change weapons all the time and you can only carry a couple of them around. This means you're reliant on enemy weapon drops and can never know for sure what you're going to be using, making the upgrade system worthless. Either one of these mechanics would be fine on their own, but when you combine them they don't work. This theme is repeated with the writing. No one on the writing team knew anything about American religion at the time this game is supposed to take place, which leads to all kinds of stupidity. Columbia has the Irish as part of the underclass, but there's no mention of the anti-Catholic sentiment that drove that in actual history, and the Founders' religious practices are heavily inspired by Protestant caricatures of Catholicism (prayers directed toward the Founding Fathers who've been elevated to something like sainthood, rather than to God). The whole game just feels incoherent. The artists were the only ones who got it right.

I really don't get any of the praise Bioshock gets…

I played the original on 360, without having played either of the System Shock games, so I wasn't going into it with any sort of expectations. All I really remember about the game at the time is how underwhelming I found it.

The "choices" between saving or turning the little sisters into slugs was pretty lame. And the Big Daddy encounters weren't really all that challenging either. I also had no idea that it was meant to be a "horror" game until after I beat the game and I read up some reviews to see if anyone felt the same way about the game as I did.

At the time, it was just another corridor shooter with some pretty bad controls that feel similar on PC with a M&KB in both the original and Bioshock Infinite.

Infinite I went into knowing I wouldn't like it, because of my previous experience with the games, but I just don't get why people think Bioshock itself is actually a good game. I just felt pretty un-engaged throughout my whole playthrough because of the sub-par mechanics and that I didn't care about the story because the game itself was boring.

I did try revisiting it a few years ago on PC and it just gives me the same feeling playing it. I remember more about what happens in Infinite than the original.

No. The story is garbage and Levine was too cowardly to even properly portray the issue he brought up and gives up even trying halfway through when the plot degenerates into MUH MULTIVERSE with plotholes the size of galaxies.

The gameplay is even worse because the gun handling is garbage, the level design is poor, the powers are lame, the enemy AI is nonexistent, the weapon choice gets polluted midway when they introduce slight variations of previous weapons (that you have no reason to pick because you already invested a shitload upgrading their predecessors) and it's even more simplistic that previous Bioshock games, completely lacking in exploration, character upgrades, hacking, lockpicking, etc. It's basically an extremely shitty shooter.

The only good thing you can say about it is that it was colorful.

I'm a complete pussy with horror games, even more so when I played it. The game over screen in Resident Evil 2 always used to scare the shit out of me. I'm still a complete pussy when it comes to horror games. Only one I've beaten in the last 10 years is Outlast.

Bioshock just isn't a scary game nor did I think it was even trying to be. The ghosts always seemed to be extremely campy to me and the plasmids pretty much put you on par (and later above) the vast majority of situations and splicers in the game. The janky ass animations didn't really help either.

Looking back, I could probably see that there's horror elements in the game, but that's kind of irrelevant. I didn't feel any sort of dread at the time and it just felt like another corridor shooter with some magic powers to me.

All of the Bioshock games are shit tbh.

The game is scary for all of 10 minutes, until you get your first weapon and plasmid. Afterwards the horror is gone because nothing poses a threat to you anymore.

It's even worse than that, killing Booker does fuckall because the original divergence is whether the twins manage to contact each other. To stop the chain of events from unfolding you'd have to go back in time and kill them first, or at least prevent them from developing their technology.

That being said, even that would not be enough because with infinite universes Booker would always follow a chain of events that would transform him into Comstock, and after that it would, again, spawn thousands of realities where Comstock is alive and well. It's just a dumb plot written by an idiot that put little thought into what he was creating.

I somewhat disagree. The maps in SS were more complex, but there was only slightly more verticality than DOOM. Also the customization choices in SS2, while still scattershot, felt a bit more meaningful.
