Pol Pot

Redpill me on Pol Pot. What were his main policies and what effect did they have on Kampucha? On the political compass thread a lot of people were saying he doesn't fit on a traditional political scale, why is that?

He was an insane primitivist who wished to destroy modernity and transform the entirety of Cambodia into a giant utopian farming commune where everyone would live in the countryside all decentralized. So he violently drove everyone out of the cities and forced them to work the fields, with everyone who resisted being executed. Obviously, this is a retarded plan which led to tremendous famine and death from exhaustion, and he managed to get over a quarter of the entire population of Cambodia killed in about 5 years, which is almost impressive.

This. Year Zero is what you get when you combine Stalinism-Maoism, palingenetic nationalism, rural populism and social Darwinism.

He was shit but so are people who regurgitate western propaganda and ignore casualties from american bombing

Also he was literally funded by the CIA to provide a proxy against Vietnam and the insurgent post-Indochinese communists.

how do you get famines when everyone's a peasant?

Colossal mismanagement.

Urban populations provide for food imports by exporting manufactured goods, receiving tribute and subsidies from patron states. Generate efficiency in the countryside by bureaucratic organization and planning - decentralization can be very inefficient!

1) Political compass is bullshit.
2) Kampuchea was fucked up seven ways to Sunday and there was no time for actual policies to be implemented.

Bomb villages and say everyone died from famine.

P.s. no, I don't defend Pol Pot.

You just did.

Huh. So it sounds like an even shittier version of Maoism.

You can read some of the documents of the Khmer Rouge translated to English here. It's some crazy shit.
Everyone is starving, but we did our best guys.
Not wearing the obligatory black pyjamas is a serious problem.
You know you're part of a fucked up organization when you believe the fact that you're upset by the population starving to death to be something worthy of self-criticism.

Pol Pot is pretty much the one major "communist" figure that even tankies won't defend; so universally reviled that he was ultimately defeated by the actual commies from Vietnam, whose interim rule was an extreme improvement in living conditions and human rights.

Naturally, he ended up being secretly backed by Western powers to spite said Vietnamese reds.

Pol Pot's Cambodia vs ML Cambodia.

Wtf man.

the only thing he did wrong was wear glasses this one time. glasses deserved it

because one peasant does not equal one unit of agricultural production

even this weird whitewashing can't avoid that he was a primmie

He wasn't though. The Khmer Rouge entertained the idea of constructing industry, though they seemed to conceive of it in a sort of Maoist "steel factory in your backyard" sort of way as they really hated cities.

Reforms form capitalism.
