I thought Eternal Darkness did a good job of capturing cosmic horror, even if the mechanics may be at odds with it at times. The best Cosmic Horror media i've ever consumed was actually the Forerunner Halo books even if you don't give a flying shit about the series I highly recommend them: They take place 100k years before the actual games do so they might as well be totally unrelated.

They start out as sort of dry, dense sci fi, where a huge part of the first book is just world building of the protagonist being bored of life, and it goes into an insane amount of detail about their society, social classes, andt echnology. The author does a fantastic job of actually making their technology, biology, and society feel truly alien and logically connected to each other: There's tons of tech that's not really analogous to anything IRL, and that feels actually novel and esoteric, vs just "guns but that shoot lasers" or "telvisions but holograms" like in most sci fi; and their biology is also totally unlike anything on earth; and their society is described/designed in such a way that it actually feels like their culture has existed with this insanely weird advanced tech for tens of thousands of years with how entrenched stuff like genetic manipulation, FTL travel, and consciousness copying and all the weird shit I alluded to is as normal and society is intertwined with them as we are IRL with metallurgy or radio waves

The scale involved are also insane, the books cover thousands of years and the characters and events they referenced have lived/go back for tens of thousands of years; and there's as much a theme of mysticism as there is sci fi from the start, so the two combined end up giving everything the feeling of this biblical/ancient epic. And since, as mentioned, this is a society that's had and used FTL travel as mundanely as we use radio waves for that time, the distances involved are also huge, and unlike in typical sci fi, they don't downplay how fucking huge it really is: Planets aren't just the equivalent of countries like in most science fiction, the insane distances between star systems is still felt and important.

So there's all of that stuff, from the protagonist being bored with life, from the society and technology being explained in such detail, plus having the context for the massive amounts of timescales and distances this society covers, makes it all the more effective when shit hits the fan, and everything spirals further and further into psychological and cosmic horror themes. The last book reads like the craziest, most batshit parts of the bible mixed with science fiction, lovecraft and junji ito.

Them trying to go with the idea of "you look at it and you go insane", when the idea of "things too complicated for the human mind to understand" was present with Lovecraft, his writing was not about that. It was the idea that our world was unimportant, and that our struggles are in vain. This was the main reason why characters went insane in the first place, not the contact with otherwordly beings in itself although that definitely had it's own effect too.

I think the problems comes from Horror not really being a thing anymore. Media HAS to have a happy ending, the hero HAS to conquer the challenge. The monster has to be explained or people are upset, they're afraid to let their imagination do some work. Media is no longer a transaction between the author and reader, it's becoming much more author focused, and quite frankly horror does not work without the audience's input.

Also, the depictions of "insanity" are what make me most mad. Insanity is not developing a twitch and getting an imaginary best friend, the characters in Lovecraft would go insane only after years and years of carrying a secret, something no one will ever believe and will accuse you of being a lunatic if you attempt to prove it, as you KNOW you can't prove it. Insanity is not magic stupidity, it's a really solid thing that needs to be developed. Seeing a scary monster does not make you insane, it's not being able to see it again.

Darkest Dungeon is so hard to compare, it's not a traditional narrative, and unless you're really willing to invest yourself to the story, there's not enough in it.

I just think it's seen in modern horror movies too. Modern movies do such a poor job of instilling a sense of fear. It's all jump scares and shock horror. I'm sure i'll get called a faggot for this on here, but Get Out was the only recent horror movie to scare me without using jump scares the entire time. There was a real sense of fear.

Scary games are the same way, there's no time to fear, there's no time to speculate and let your imagination create the horror, the monster is usually just shown to you right off the bat, and explained, and the movie/game is trying to kill it, and jump scares come from that.

Layers of Fear was all just jump scares and some shock horror, I couldn't get into it.

Japs in general just love using western mythology, including Crowley occultism and Lovecraft's stories. Even if they don't portray it accurate to the original myth and are just namedropping they at least make it look cool.

He was very ambitious but he did a shit job of expressing his ideas and used incomprehensible terror as a crutch. I haven't read his letters nor all of his novels because he wrote a shitload, but all of my favorites were much closer to earth.

The Rats in the Walls is pretty archetypal Lovecraft. The protagonist learns secrets that drive him mad, there's a hereditary taint of degeneracy, it's just the particulars of those things are a bit more mundane than he often writes about. There's also stuff like The Silver Key that isn't even horror and the Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath that blends that style with his more recognizable horror.
All that is Lovecraftian, the same spirit runs through it all. It's the derivative works that fail to be Lovecraftian, because they fail to capture what was common to all his work.

They let you fight stuff, had good pacing for escalation but still made your victory seem like a defeat.

I don't mean it in that sense at all. I've often thought his descriptions of characters to be that much more tied to reality when he ties the racial angle to it. Hell, some of my favourite exerts from him are "aquatic negro" and "hatefully negroid mouth."

All of these are either adaptations, influenced by or borrow elements from Lovecraftian stories or themes - much more than many of these stupid indie games that just slap the Cthulhu name on it and call it a day.
