This for example is 60FPS and contains a huge amount of red/violet/green along with large gradient color shifts, requires a rather high bitrate

Ditto for this fight, large amounts of red/green/violet along with large dark areas and fast movement requires an overzealous bitrate to not look like trash

Vs. the Taking over Midnight where you can comfortably fit it under 8MB no problem because even though it has all the same colors etc as the other one, there is very little to no movement so the encoder can reserve more bits for the bursts of movement and harvests them from the lower complexity scenes

And if you take sources with almost nothing happening for most scenes, you can fit 20min or more easily into the encoders

VP9/HEVC is designed for ultra low bitrates to boot, in area's on screen where nothing is happening instead of wasting bits for scenes for something already visible, it will just tell the codec to keep the pixels where they are until X time tells it to change, which is one reason why VP9/HEVC can compress at far lower bitrates than VP8/MPEG-4 can

crf != bitrate
it literally means constant quality factor, which can save bitrate on quieter scenes and use more bitrate on scenes that need them
and if used properly, it has literally no constraints on bitrate, so it will use as much bitrate as it needs to maintain quality (read: no artifacts on fast scenes)

vp8 and x264 already did that, and in fact they could save a lot of bandwidth if using proper parameters, the difference between the last and this generation of codecs, is the algorithm used for compression

Constant Rate Factor cannot predict beyond its reference frames and does not scan the entire media to save bits from low scenes to give to high ones, CRF only preserves a set amount of data given the CRF system based on complexity

CRF 18 for example is what they use for Blu-Rays, and CRF-25 is what they use for DVD's, and again, CRF wastes bits on scenes with nothing happening because it's trying to keep an image quality quota, not harvest bits for scenes that need them

This is why a video encoded and has an average of 1Kbit through will look worse than a 2 pass 1Kbit video, because instead of allocating a table of complex scenes it just attempts to keep image quality quota for the entire video instead even for areas that don't need it

At the time I made them Episode 17 wouldn't fit under 12mb due to forced allocation of bits due to length/size etc

I did manage to get it under 12mb but I had to do a 35% reduction in video size and it looked like you were watching it on a PSP

I always recommend Gogol, his stories are very short and easy to read, read them side-by-side with their English translations. I kinda hate poetry so I don't what I can recommend there, people don't normally use the vocabulary that's used in classical poetry either so learning that would be a total waste of time.

In terms of skill required, it's a lot easier than I though if you draw over other footage (eg. animated 3d models) to help you get a smooth animation, it's just fucking tedious to spend a month drawing frame after frame just for a 2 seconds worth of 12 fps animation. This is the reason Japs send their animations to Thailand/Philippines/China/wherever cus even they don't want to do it themselves.

Animation naturally takes a fuck load of time and the are a gorrilian ways to animate. There is an entire process before you start doing frames which also take a buttload of time(that is if you planned out the animation, you can still go in basically blind). But ultimately its still like drawing - you have to practice it to get a feel for timing, you could just be naturally talented and be better at it from the get go. You don't necessarily need to be that good at art itself what you need is consistency between frames. Its kinda the same with how movie frames are shittier quality if you stop it but in motion it looks just fine. Although anime is mostly high detail still frames.

Yeah, it's not about being good it's about being fast, you can get away with a lot of ugly mistakes as long as the animations themselves are consistent. Shitting out frames as fast as possible is also a good exercise to improve your overall drawing skills as well.
