I did quite like Twisted Metal 1 & 2 on the PSX though, even got Vigilante 8 on the Dreamcast for a similar experience, but nobody was ever able to make vehicular arena combat work well from what I played. Not since Destruction Derby 2 anyhow.

Black and Head-On are proper improvements to 1 and 2. Yeah, the PS1 was Twisted Metal's heyday, but they kept going strong after that.

I've never played through the series myself, but I was under the impression Kojima did not get along with the higher-ups at Konami and "sabotaged" the MGS series by tying up every single possible loose end and killing/retiring all major characters in MGS4. Outside of Twisted Metal (with the last being 2012 which is functionally fine but focus on Online kills it), there's only Gas Guzzlers Extreme I can think of off the top of my head.

Especially compared to Destruction Derby which had really small maps, these one's got pretty evolved as the levels progress. I mean when you compare it to the other games at the time, the graphics were amazing. And even better they really improved the game in the second release a year later. That probably has to be the best one out of all of them.

Not to mention that this is also the guy that made God of War which has spawned hundreds of clone games but is also probably the game that popularized the quick time event as a gameplay mechanic.

What killed me about 90's music was that it largely sold on high production music videos, meanwhile the actual concerts were generally pretty spartan jam sessions and overly-rehearsed sets and lacked any real theatrics or dynamism with the audience. You didn't have bands like Alice Cooper who hired professional illusionists like James Randi to create elaborate stage effects and pyrotechnic displays. You certainly didn't have bands like the Grateful Dead who would weave in and out of songs - and live-remixes of those songs - in hour-long audio orgies where the energy feedback of the audiences almost made them the impromptu conductors of a symphony.
