I've never drawn before in my life and am attempting to learn from scratch with a graphic tablet. How badly did I fuck up?

Not really at all, if you can afford it. You should work on paper too, though. You don't need anything fancy for that, just pencils and any paper, but I've always been told it's important to practice on both.

I had a gift card laying around that I wasn't using and bought one with that so it's not an issue. But after starting to read books for beginners tailored around pencil and paper I'm considering setting it aside for now.

In my experience, its not a big deal, I'd still go out and buy a sketch pad just for practice. It's easier to do traditional and then move to digital

I've been working on a copy of pic related in oil for some two months now (it doesn't look very good, but I learned a lot) and I only just finished it yesterday.

Some days you just aren't feeling it and drop the brush after an hour, other times you can go for four hours straight.
If it starts feeling like "something you have to do," then just drop it.
Also, standing while drawing or painting helps a lot to prevent you from dozing off and keeping you focused.
If you can make for yourself a decent standing set up, do it.

Maybe. I've bit off enough with just the hair animation. I might sneakily duplicate a strand I've already done, flip it, move it, and start it on a different frame so I can hide it among the others at the back, thus adding complexity without having to draw more.

Okay, I animated the hoodie blowing around as well. It was tedious, but looks much better than the completely static hoodie.

Now it needs shading. I will probably do that all on one layer so I can maybe export it separately and add shadows to it, then overlay it with additional shadows while maintaining the same shadow opacity overall. Doing 8 frames of shading on multiple layers would be far more work anyways.

Mixtape.moe isn't working so I used Uguu.se but it only lasts for 24 hours. Thread is pretty much dead now regardless so 24 hours is fine. In the meantime, I'll attempt to get a WebM file that looks decent and is small enough to post. Thread may be gone by then with how long VP9 rendering takes so I'll just drop it in the gamergay thread (there's always one around) if I ever manage to get a postable WebMm.

Well, here's a WebM. I gave up on trying to get it to look any better than this. I've seen some really autistic compression wizards on Holla Forums, but I'm not that good.

Here's my current attempt at converting it too. There's still room for improvement and I'll continue with more attempts and I'm wondering whether or not to shrink the resolution or if I keep it as is while achieving a decent quality. Any feedback from anons on whether I shrink the resolution or not?

You should try shrinking it by about 25-30% so you can bump up quality, but otherwise it looks good.

What converter are you using? I saw this webm on conversion a bread ago.

On a side note: the image seems to have been given a warmer, more yellowish color in the WebM as opposed to the large mp4. I liked my original color grading better, but what can I do.

I also fixed a minor issue with the mask on the foreground branch.

I still see compression artifacts, but it's better than my attempts. It still has the masking issue on the foreground branch. I'll have to render the larger MP4 again which still takes ages then upload it to some file host if you wanna try encoding it without that issue. f you look closely you will see some crap appearing on the tip of the branch as it sways around. I should have noticed that sooner.

Yeah, I don't think even the most talented people could get a clean encode without shrinking it.

I was leaning towards that too. I'll try to be greedy and see if I can get away with a height of 800px but the first webm's height of 600px also seems reasonable as a fallback if I need too. I use FFmpeg encode the videos. It seems daunting at first but you quickly get the hang of it after a while and I've been having a blast this entire week playing around and experimenting with it.

Encoding the video takes about 2 hours and I plan to give it several tries so time and waiting is not a problem for me. I'll continue with the original MP4 for now to work on reducing the artifacts around the hair until the fixed MP4 is reuploaded in the mean time. I noticed the color difference too, it might have to do with the color space/range used when it was re-encoded into webm but FFprobe listed all those properties as unknown. Even on my version I think I see a slight color difference too.

My apologies I was more tired than I thought and passed out when there was only ~20 minutes of encoding time left so I've lost about 8 hours of practice encodes. I should be finished and post the final version in the newest GG thread around midnight today(or late afternoon in 'murican time).
