Its amazing. This the most shining shit in the gaming universe. What do you guys think? I played for 20 hours and went into severe depression questioning my life choices. This game is opposite of having fun.

It was shit the very moment they decided to mess with the combat system again. Making everyone play the same way will always be the core offense any musou can commit. Everything else is accessory in comparison, but since basically everything in this is genuinely terrible save for a few ideas in the open world design, it boils down to a uniquely terrible game. Execution is bad, polish is terrible, voice acting has to have open at least one seal of the apocalypse, and of course the optimization is awful.

Only saving grace I can give it is that it is so mind-numbing it's pretty good at forgetting time entirely while you're doing cardio. You do need to be something else in parallel though, because otherwise it's the gaming equivalent of binging on warm, terrible strong beer because you can't sleep.

You forgot about reduced weapon count. If you think "clones" argument was about combat system you're mistaken. It was actually about literal clones like characters stealing other character's unique weapons.
For example Taishi Ci is very forgettable officer but he had ridiculous Twin Rods weapon. Now Yue Jin and Xiahou Yuan in this game have his unique weapon, but have one-two different attacks with it, and even utilize it better because of different stats.

I got really butthurt when i seen that Shangxiang's Chakrams were given to Wang Yi instead of giving Wang Yi her unique trishula or emei piercers. She actually had some of the most unique gameplay in DW8 before because of her anti-officer assassin style moveset, but now she's just a Shangxiang clone.

Reduced weapon count is bad, for sure, but with this system it barely matters either way. They could have given each officer two brand new weapons and you would still be doing the very same inane shit every officer you pick.

You should had listened to fans of DW9 who currently say DW9 is so good it spoiled them and they can't play DW8 or any older games anymore, because of how good DW9 system is because of control it gives over your character.
And i am not talking about some redditors, i am talking about /eagg/.
I only so far noticed it allows you to become immortal and easily spam air combos without any danger. Chaos can become piss easy even without items as soon as you figure it out.

I don't know if I should be shocked that Koei didn't learn their lesson from DW6. When I heard that they completely removed the charge system this time, I knew to stay the fuck away. And then when I found they limited the weapon selection again I lost all hope.

Wouldn't a bladestorm approach to map design have worked better? It may not be an open world, but it's going in that direction.

It's like it's trying to discredit everything that's bad with it with a simple "I don't care". They don't even try to pretend the issues don't exist, they actually admit they are there and then try to pass it off as something not important.
The Chrono Trigger one literally said "the port has all these issues, but I don't care".

When the game runs is fun currently playing the Wu campaign.
Pretty impressive all the plot they crammed into the game.
I love when you master how to control morale and you can take an enemy base with little effort.
Also like how is better to surround castles and stuff before entering.

Haven't had the occasion to play Bladestorm. I just know I wasn't wholly disgusted by DW9's open world aspect, I do like the idea of network of influence thing and how you're preparing for big assaults by prepping the terrain instead of just going in hot like usual. The idea. Execution isn't good because, like in all other aspects, this shit just wasn't nearly ready to ship. Also the inane busywork quests can fuck off in any open world game.

Is the main issue just the optimization? Or would the game still flat out suck donkey ballz even if it ran at a silky smooth 60 fps 4k UHD all the time on a toaster?

My pick is DW8XLCE, but I know some swear by DW7 instead. You can also emulate SW3 on dolphin, it's excellent save for gwaphics and fps.

Try out DW7 Empires, i heard its great. DW8E is kind of an upgraded version, but DW7E had more endings and events.
Spirit of Sanada is much better than SW4-II.

DW7E had better maps. I also liked the fame system compared to the moral system in 8 empires.

Not really, no. The open world problem is more a symptom than a disease.

To be absolutely honest Koei spent time and resources on creating open world instead of delivering quality product. The reason why more than 1/3 of characters don't have their unique weapons is most certainly because of development time constrains. And the reason why it performs like shit and runs at 720p on OG ps4 is because they didn't had time to optimize concept they never built in their games. And new graphical features they included like hi-res new skin, hair, shaders and textures just don't bode well with new draw distance. They fucked with combat system to balance the game with stealth and bow features, that exist for boring hunting feature, since DW8 already had bows for fighting. Its how koei imagines evolution of their game from beat em up into action adventure, which will lead it to its grave. But i am pretty sure changes to combat weren't fully implemented and they were making them along side of enormous work on open world china simulator. Hence why everyone plays the same now.
So yes, it is the open world that ruined it. It ruined the potential effort on making good DW entry.
151 cutscenes this game has for every character and the fact alone that 90 characters in this game have their own story mode compared to faction system in DW8 is amazing achievement. Cutscenes themselves are really good looking, they show a definite upgrade in graphics compared to previous entry in the series, even when compared to PS4 version of DW8XL. They made cool new characters that actually look interesting, removed the edgy red and black costume of Lu Bu and replaced it with solid golden armor, women look much better too.

Remove open world idea, make effort on maps and weapons and you get a good DW game, throw in it few additional non-shit gamemodes for fun, don't fuck with combo based combat system and you get a perfect slasher that people will enjoy for another 5 years till dw10. They didn't get the memo to not pursue an open world gimmick like Lu Bu, they had to ruin it for everybody including themselves.

I don't believe that's the case. Open world is not the cause of the new combat, but a consequence of the same initial reasoning. Pic related, they believed DW9 would be their huge, worldwide mass appeal title, the first game 90% of their imagined brand new audience would ever know. And a stupid developer will always think a brain dead gameplay is the surest ticket to more sales.
Besides, the combat system is obviously about setting up epic QTEs and cinematic slow-mos, not supporting a tacked on stealth mechanic or whatever. A stealth mechanic isn't worth reworking your entire gameplay from scratch, the new audience will drool for shiny dangling keys is.
This is textbook shitting on your fanbase to seek out more sales, including the chinese as evidenced by the mandarin dub. Nothing more.

I'm running a GTX 1060 and the game ran smoothly with good FPS most of the time. I did have slowdowns a couple of times, but those were the type where I restart the game and everything is fine again for hours.

Every other complaint is pretty damn justified though. The open world is shit and makes every single mission feel exactly the same, the weapon system has the same problem. Officers with the same weapon DO have different attacks, so they aren't exact clones, but it's still shitty. My biggest complaint though is still that you have absolutely no impact on the story. Usually you can do bonus objectives to save certain officers and unlock hypothetical routes, but literally nothing you do has any impact on ANYTHING except win or lose. For example, even if you completely ignore all the fire attack objectives in Chibi, the fire attack still happens exactly as planned (and it happens in a fucking cutscene with zero impact on the gameplay at that)

Why are you guys surprised about this? Doesn't Dynasty Warriors do this every generation then makes it better with their sequel.

Open world games are dime a dozen these days. I don't think the problem is specifically that Koei blew the budget building it. It's possible they blew their budget simply changing everything up rather than rehashing and reusing everything, but at least compared from-scratch the open world wouldn't have been any more involved.

The weapon issue really seems like them culling all of the less "realistic" weapons. Also the completely overhauled (and not in a good way) combat system required them to make completely new attack animations for every single weapon rather than building on previous games, so that's probably a bigger reason than the open world that they cut back.

Nope, they actually reused some old musou attacks from DW8 for some of the trigger attacks, as well as many air musou attacks.

This is only the second time they've fucked up like this in 9 games, and the last time (dw6) they at least built a mechanically interesting game underneath the fuckup, so it is kind of surprising.

DW6's combat had at least different attack chains with different ranges and such between officers, even if you did nothing but spam. Here, the only differences are pretty much cosmetic. Also the siege mechanics were legit good. Why they didn't keep them is beyond me Some officer redesigns were kept later in the series as well. DW6 was a fuck up, but not an incontrovertible garbage fire on all fronts like DW9 is.

Yeah the prompts can be retarded in this series. But as an illustration of how shit 9 is, there is no native controller support, yet all the prompts are controller icons.

What if Empires in open world will be a blunder too? Think about it. Ending any battle by grappling hooking through the wall, no need for siege equipment, no need for soldiers, no need for base capture, just run towards next enemy castle and assassinate the leader. And then just paint map of your territories by doing this over and over again.

It's worse than simply not having native controller support. Running DW9 actively disables all controller inputs. The whole steam-overlay thing is a way of tricking the game into thinking you are outside it when you are using the controller, and then steam sends the inputs to the game.

You can see this in practice if you try to use a third party controller mapper instead. Even with the controller mapped to keyboard buttons it still does nothing at all in game.

To be honest that's pretty much how Empires usually goes anyway. No grappling hook, but you pretty much just run up, assassinate whoever controls the gate, and then walk in and kill the leader. That's assuming there even is a gate.

Truly this game finds new and exciting ways to fuck up. I was halfway tempted to just put it on the lowest difficulty and go through officers' story modes, but I'll try that when the performance is halfway acceptable. Even if just ditching this mess entirely and starting work on DW10 would be preferable.

That's pretty much what I was doing. I stuck to normal, but with maxed out weapons, gems and accessories (all easily purchased by fishing) it may as well have been easy. I tried chaos for a little while but I just found it tedious.

I really should at least finish doing the main storylines once each, I haven't done Jin yet. The ONE THING DW9 does well is the official storyline. There's a lot more details outside of the battles than any other DW game, and the open world does a pretty nice job of presenting exactly where battles are in relation to each other and their significance to the overall war.

I did mention that performance is fine earlier (on a 1060). Try toning down some graphics settings Here's what I have mine set to, although setting textures to high did cause SOME slowdowns, it was perfect when they were at medium.

Yeah no, my performance is much worse than that, putting it on low just makes it barely playable. And I can run shit like Arkham Knight without the performance patches so you know this is a whole new frontier of awful optimization.

When dedicated mining cards become a reality and GPUs, being designed for something else entirely, are no longer the performance-per-dollar better option.
I know at least one tech company was working on making dedicated mining hardware, so I should hope it takes off soon.
I recently spent $450 dollarydoos on a 1060 because my 680 died, fucking Straya tax on top of the bitcoin mining tax. Card runs great but I'm still salty I paid so much.

If you think about it, Samurai Warriors 4 (all versions) is superior product to both DW8 and DW9. 60 FPS on original generation PS4 systems, unlike both DW games. Graphics is prettier than in DW games, and combat much more enjoyable than both.
Fuck, they even included custom character creation in original SW4 and couldn't in first edition of DW9, their first open world warriors.
The only significant difference is that nips instead of chinks. That's it. And that 4-II was awful standalone XL expansion thanks to capcom suing them for concept of making expansions.

What i want to add is that it will be the same with Samurai Warriors 5, they will look back at how undeveloped their engine with DW9 was and just deliver a plainly better game in all features. It keeps happening. Samurai Warriors 3 was the only bad SW game just because wii downgraded it.

The SW4 series was made for the PS3, so it makes sense the PS4 would run them at a great speed.

Fuck no. SW4 is Samurai Warriors Chronicles - on console this time. It's insultingly easy thanks to hyper attacks being handled like free candy and the partner system breaking any urgency in regards to tactical objectives. It's sorely lacking in content. Literally the only plus it has over SW3 or even 2 is the counter system. I bought a bloodborne box with the idea I could at least play my favorite musou series on it and I got a hot serving of go fuck yourself. At least it has Warriors Orochi 3.
I mean, yeah, DW9 puts it into perspective, but you're fucking deranged if you think the subpar cashgrab that is SW4 even competes in the same category as DW8.
