Zyuganov won in '96 but Yeltsin held onto power anyway. Russian "elections" don't matter; the Yeltsin-Putin neoliberal clique holds state power regardless of the actual votes cast.

Putin was Yeltsin's hand-picked successor, I don't think all that much has changed; the oligarchs still have all the money. His criticisms of his predecessor are so he can pose as something else politically, but I don't know that said posturing should be taken at face value.
Yeltsin definitely relied on the US and IMF for money and endorsements, but the oligarchs and their media channels were just as vital to his victory.
Also this, Putin first action in power was giving Yeltsin immunity from corruption charges. I do think that Putin is less of a puppet of the oligarchs then yeltsin is though.
I have watched "Putins Purge" all of Yeltsin's were Soros backed and got kicked out of Russia. Putin said Zyuganov would have won, and even wiki shows how much support the KPRF had in the 90's.

Eh, the CPRF is a lame duck. There were (and probably still are) a million groups in Russia claiming to be the legitimate heirs of the CPSU, and CPRF emerged as the biggest one. Yeltsin's mafia then groomed then as controlled opposition, seeing as they were pretty reactionary themselves, which played to the mafia's strengths. It had a shot at redemption in 96, but we know how that turned up.
