Last I bought at launch was HeartGold. Last I actually bought new (albeit at a massive discount at the time) was White 2. Sapphire was the last game I bought. I was so unenthused by it that I couldn't even finish it. I attributed some of it to being older than the target audience but Ruby/Sapphire didn't seem to have much "heart" to it. The game, story, and most Pokemon were pretty forgettable, and FUCK that shitty ass horn music.

Over time there were some minor blips of Pokemon in my life (tried Nuzlocke Challenge and had a good time with that, shitposted with anons when Twitch Plays Pokemon first came onto the scene (before the fucking retarded democratic system ruined it and before autists took it WAY too seriously), gave Pokemon Go a shot and it was fun for like a week but Niantic fumbled hard and went absolutely nowhere with it) but I think I've outgrown Pokemon. I'm going to be honest, after playing pokemon sun and see what they did in the ultra versions I see no reason to keep playing the series from now on, since pokemon X & Y these game started to go downhill and it's going to get worse from here on out.
maybe they will make them more linear and hold your hand just for you to "expirience" the half assed story or make them without post game at all and have the audasity to say "just play online if you want more content" only for gamefreak to make a "enhanced" version months later with just some insignificant extra plot/game mode that they want to call a post-game + legendary hunting.

Gen 5 was the beginning of the end. XY and SM were both trying to emulate BW's story heavy game, but trying to go further with it. BW/2 were great games, but they probably ruined the series the same way RE4 did.

After gen 3. I played my brother's copy of diamond and found it painfully boring and on-rails. The game just pushes you every step of the way to the next place you need to do, and the fun is completely gone. HG/SS were good, but every other new Pokemon game looks terrible to me.

Gen 4, other then health bars roughly taking the time it takes to make a pokemon game to go down it was just when I got sick of the series.
Too many things were just stale with the series.
Double battles didn't become the series standard when that's the only way there's actually a theory of strategy in these fights other then counter picking into OTK, even Final Fantasy Mystic Quest knew you need 2 party members for an interesting RPG fight, but in pokemon double and tag battles are so situational and boss fights never had them so there was never a point in keeping the moves that are clearly favoured for them.
Designs also became too similar, like going into gen 4 I seen on its route 1 a birb and a filthy Canadian which reminded me of gen 1 where I seen a very similar birb and a filthy Mexican on the first route, like just use the old birb and the Mexican, why claim all these new mons but they're just the old ones again, Gen 7 at least didn't list the new forms as new mons.
Too tired of this series I looked into gen 6 and 7 for their mega's and Z moves but it looks like literally who cares tier, only things stacked on and nothing in the games being changed to make them more entertaining and engaging.

Shigeki Morimoto is still there. He's been responsible for the battle system since the beginning. The only feature that's actively improved with every release, and doesn't suffer from constant rollbacks and lack of planning. Once he leaves, Pokemon is basically fucked since the combat system, the actual gameplay, will likely die without him.
He also directed HG/SS, which is the most feature-dense Pokemon game.

He also directed and Emerald, he's got a really great attitude for extra content. Around BW they got a bunch of new guys to do third versions/remakes. Platinum, B2W2, and USUM were pretty good for their first attempts, ORAS was shit but Ohmori is basically Masuda 2 so he got to direct Sun and Moon right after. I think whoever was working on "Z" did such a shit job that it got canceled, which is really impressive because I don't know how you'd fuck up a Pokemon game worse than Ohmori did. Actually, I'd like to check out the credits of Pokemon games, I'm also sure a bunch of 2D asset artists were replaced with 3D asset artists.

The models actually look alright, although they're WAY too high quality for the 3DS to handle I understand they're trying to future proof it. As you mentioned, the colors are pretty faded, which can be fixed. The biggest problem with the models is the animations, which are limited, bad, and even when they're good they lack lots of personality. Compare it to HAL or Genius Sonority's work in 3D and you'll see the problem. At least they added some walking animations in Gen 7, so it's clear they've got more in mind. But at this rate it will take a while for them to get really good.

Gamefreak claims Z never existed, and never was going to exist. They bucked the trend on 3rd versions awhile ago. Much like B2W2 being two separate games and a sequel to BW, they wanted to do "something different" and "defy expectations" with generation six.
So they just didn't make a game at all.

I'm also snooping through the credits now since I didn't realize Ohmori directed SM. I thought it was Iwao, and thought he was a super faggot for directing SM and USUM back-to-back, but he only directed USUM. It seems Iwao was working as the battle system director in SM, possibly as a protege to Morimoto.
Realizing that Iwao is a battle system director who attempted to salvage the fucking mess Ohmori made caused my opinion on him do a 180. Although now I'm upset with myself for suddenly thinking there might be some hope for Pokemon.

Half of the issues I have with the models is that they all seem rather inanimate, which coming from Gen 5 where they had the constant animation which kinda gave them some personality to them.

One instance that pisses me off is Skarmory, I love steel types and flying types and Skarm's 5th gen sprite animation, while could be improved, shows that it's rather animal in nature, it's posing aggressively and flashing it's sword feathers.
In 6/7th gen? It just floats there and does nothing.

If you look at the way Game Freak develops games, Sun and Moon were already in development as far back as X and Y's release date. While they have bucked the trend of proper third versions, they have released a sequel and a third version split into two since then. Notice my quotes around "Z", it could have been called anything, I should have called it Gen 6's third version. In addition, Game Freak has really been fucking pushing the yearly releases lately. Either the game was such a shitshow it got canceled before X and Y even came out (although likely after it went gold), or Gen 6 was such a shitshow that they decided to funnel the "Z" team to making Sun and Moon not run like absolute shit. I'm also surprised Ohmori directed two fucking games at once, since he did both ORAS and SM.

Oh, Pokemon has tons of hope if Ohmori and Masuda stop directing games, at least then they'll be easy with some decent extra content instead of patronizingly easy and full of shitty cut-scenes. Basically Kirby instead of what we've got now. Iwao added a shitty version of the Battle Factory, band new Pokemon, and some cute side stuff, he seems like he'll be alright. I'd rather have B2W2 or Platinum's director though.

Same boat but we started with Red/Blue and lasted to ORAS. We both also had our friend groups that also oddly enough stuck to Pokemon through the years. BW2 to XY was where the series lost me really. The games have been dumbing themselves down, never did like megas, and never got into the comp scene.

HGSS were the best games made imo. I saw a resurgence in popularity around that time as well in the vidya circles. I think the low price of the DS combined with nostalgia for SG, and the rise in popularity of internet Pokemon communities helped.

Any other old fans looking to give it another shot on the switch? I havent gotten the console yet but once it's more mature i'll probably give the 2nd or 3rd pokemon games a shot.

I do think the Switch games will be better than the 3DS ones if Ohmori or Masuda aren't directing all of them. Not like that's hard, the 3DS could barely handle Game Freak, not to mention Game Freak barely has any idea what they're doing in 3D. Maybe thy the time Gen 10 rolls around they'll be back on track, the switch to 3D fucked them up something fierce. This. The last game I bought in the series was Pokemon X, and it was really lame. I think Gen 4 and 5 were the peak of the serious (personally, Platinum is my favorite). I preferred it back when it was 2D sprites, I don't like the 3D models nearly as much. Plus, Gen 4 and 5 always felt like they had a reasonable amount of difficulty, to me (at least, when I played them last, years ago, when I was younger).

Jesus fuck, yes. They instantly forgot them in the next game but kept the same damn animations for the previous pokemon. As a result, most of the new flying pokemon don't fly and actually have life to them, but look like total tards doing the flying Z move becuase there were clearly two different teams working on that shit.

Pokemon is a series you have to get into while you're young, or you will always be alienated from mit. I was already in Quake 2 multiplayer when it came out, and to my demographics the pokemen looked like thinly disguised tamagotchis.

But even I can see how the series let the worst of japanese culture get the better of it, from the degeneration of monster design. The original pokemon are iconic, almost like a logo: nowadays it's overdesigned bullshit made for defective adults, pedos etc.

This, I grew up with Pokemon, but learning that Pokemon had EV's which gave extra stat boosts when you were fighting enemies strong against you and other mechanics, had me hooked when I grew older.

Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon are an explicit improvement over Sun and Moon. Get USUM instead if you're going to get into Gen VII.
It's not worth it if you're paying money, and unless your time is completely worthless to you, it's still not worth a minimum 20 hours of your time (7+ spent in mandatory dialogue and cutscenes that make Dr. Seuss look Shakespearean) if you're going to pirate it.

You cannot baby or handhold children with games, since they're not as retarded as you think. They despise being talked down to even more than you or I, especially if they're being talked down to by their own toy. They will either figure out the game using the guidance found within, or make their own fun. Tearing control away from them every 5 minutes to remind them how to play does not entertain them and instead pisses them off with impotent baby rage, and that's exactly what you're going to get if you play current Pokemon.
It will take you 4 hours just to escape the tutorial. Longer if you dilly-dally in the slightest and attempt to play the game by catching Pokemon.
