Exclusively withing itself?
No, the whole point of an ARG by definition is that it extends past the medium it starts from.

I mean that the clues are found within the game.

The Secret World, kinda.

Well, there was that sigil ARG, fragments of some esoteric symbol could be found across dozens of indies, I recall one of them was Neon Struct. Don't know what became of that.

Didn't Halo do something like this back in the day? I remember they even set up a (pretty convincing) fake UFO enthusiast website where you could find an audio clip of characters from the game talking backwards or something. I cannot remember if the clues started in one of the games though. IIRC the ARG was called "I love bees" or something similar.

What is ARG?

Augmented Reality Game.

Basically it's a scavenger hunt that takes place across multiple mediums which generates hype for a franchise.

Metal Gear Solid with the codec numbers being on the CD case and needing to switch controller ports to beat a boss.

Bumb

flying babies are gay
cats are gay
crown and robe kings are fucking gay
stop posting gay shit

...

I heard the game gets meta, but is it really an ARG clue?

Just coming by to say that's a good painting of a cat, the face is pretty realistic.
What kind of cat is that? It looks like a British cat with floppy ears.

Doom 3 with the martianbuddy.com website

Reddit-chan is cute.

>Reddit-chan
Gilda Mars is A SHIT!

A SHIT

Scottish fold, user.

That shitty comic has no right to be that cute.
More?

The stuff hidden in the game's files leads to whatever the dev is working on next, and there's a few small nods in the actual game that mentions things found in the files.

What about Glittermitten Grove? It was an entire ARG game encased around the actual game everyone was looking for.

Because we don't hang out with the dorks, user.

If you think retarded is equal to cute. Then yes.
Consolewar shit, garbage-tier of taste, 90% of reddit content are reposts from elsewhere and karma system which rewards being good goy, it blocks you when it's too low.
Using certain subs mainly /r/donald and KiA, blocks you on all major ones.
Also admins/mods were caught on manipulating karma points on it.

Swordquest had you hunt down clues across 3 games (Airworld being unreleased due to financial issues) in order to compete in a contest to get some crazy fucking shit. A jewel crested sword, philosopher's stone, crown and a chalice, all made of real luxurious metals and gems, and all adding up to $150,000 in total (adjusted for inflation, that's almost $400,000). It was serious fucking shit.
The games involved you going through cryptic mazes, solving cryptic puzzles which would give you hints for stuff you would look up the official comic book, manual, etc. You find these hidden words and phrases, write them down and send them into Atari where they plop your ass down in front of a bunch of other people and have you compete with them for the final prize.
The ultimate ARG. If you can call it an ARG.

...

Yes, turns out its for some kind of SCP wiki knock off called Project Libitina.

also
This might be good, maybe not as good a golden age SCP wiki, but still might be good.

Year Walk sorta had one. It was simple, but it turned the game on its head.
explore the forest and realize it's a love story about a man going on a year walk to try and see the future

Also goddammit I delete the post twice to edit it and I keep making mistakes so fuck it.,

ARG is used as an advertising tool most of the time. Even then it's an awful tool as people would get led to believe something amazing behind all these mysteries, not someone trying to sell a car or to be shown a timer for the upcoming game. They'd immediately lose interest.

The Payday the heist secret was actually pretty good and pretty clever, I recommend looking into all the clues associated with it.
payday.wikia.com/wiki/PAYDAY_Secret_ARG
There is apparently going to be a secret in Payday 2, but overkill set the clues at the game launch, the game is nearing the end of it's lifespan, and even overkill themselves have said it's still not in the game yet, so I have no idea if they're actually going to do a PD2 secret.

There's a fuckton of ARG material in it.

That image doesn't even list all the reason reddit is bad, the site also has an unbelievable amount of drama and huge cliques that control large areas of the site. Virtually every big subreddit is either directly controlled or at least connected to the same small group of 150~ people that all want to purge the wrongthink off the site. Names you see come up a lot are ones like JoyousCacophony, krispykrackers and TheJackal8. Usually when a person mods a big subreddit, they mod several others as well. Some of them mod over 100 subreddits.
Think about that, that's fucking insane. Imagine if Mark wasn't just the head of Holla Forums, but was also a mod on Holla Forums, Holla Forums, Holla Forums, Holla Forums, /cow/, /k/, /a/, Holla Forums and /n/. That's what it's like on reddit but worse and there are dozens of people with that much power.

I think Undertale had one but it never went anywhere.

What the fuck, people are okay with that?

All that build up for
FUCKING
NOTHING

Except that wasn't an ARG, just toby having no idea how to implement him

Toby is truly a genius of our age, he does all that setup and then does nothing with it.

Wasn't a fucking ARG, just an easter egg of some cut content. Don't project fan-autism and game theory niggers onto the developer. There was no "pay off" because it *was* the pay off.

They were melted down by the banks who bought out the company's assets, only one of the four treasures still exist now.

I played this game and never suspected any of that, but I suppose that's par for the course. Definitely an interesting little game.

The game Frog Fractions 2 was in?

Didn't Portal 2 or something do exactly that when Valve put a bunch of SSTV recordings in the games files?

Glittermitten Grove

Yeah it was a huge deal that made people buy other games and whose payoff was the game being unlocked one hour early or something like that. ARG's make me feel cheated.

do you mean an alternate reality game or an altered reality game? I know it seems bizarrely pedantic but there's a major difference
alternate reality games interact with the real world in some way that makes it a partial reality (The Secret World gives you a web browser and you can look up information based on clues like a completely fictitious company's very real webpage)
altered reality games superimpose virtual elements on a real world landscape (ARGames for 3DS)

Not to be abrasive but who the fuck cares?

I think it's pretty obvious the thread is about Alternate Reality Games. Speaking of which, there was one for Rainbow Six: Siege's most recent update. Turns out it was just for a week long zombie event, but it was pretty neat, they hid parts of QR codes over different maps that weren't there before, stuff like that.

I think you meant to be abrasive, and that's not very nice! Please be nice!

I'm sorry I hadn't had my morning cigarette.

Then Metal Gear Solid 2 happens

Did anyone ever make any porn of the tutorial fairy?
