Honestly, I don't love a lot of the armor. Things like the Raths no longer look iconic at all because they went more realistic, less saturated/cartoony.

But now they have alpha and beta sets for each armor.

3 Ultimate would probably be best on the 3DS, though if you want to do multiplayer, go for 4 Ultimate. If you have a decent PC that can run PPSSPP though emulate Freedom Unite and/or Portable 3rd.

Not him, but which one out of these? Background: I've only played 3U until I got bored with it because it never seemed to get challenging, and the MH:W demo which was objectively awful. I still have a hankerin' for monster hunting though, so I might as well travel back in time and play whatever the best one was, since I believe MH:W is the death knell and there will never be a great MH game on a console. Pic related because it's how I want to feel when I kill a hard monster.

At least there is no longer the issue of the gunner armor looking cooler than the blademaster but you only play blademaster.
But let's be real they could have just made it so you buy one armor and it's appearance changes based on if you're using a gunner or blademaster weapon

If it's challenge you want. Play Freedom Unite, fighting the stiff controls and front-loaded difficulty makes the game plenty challenging. Especially if you don't do the village elder quests and just do the gathering hall quests solo(which are harder because they're all balanced for at least 2 people). Honestly though I had fun playing through the whole game solo on gathering hall quests, it felt like a better paced experience than the village elder quests. It goes from gathering and small monster quests to big monster quests a lot faster and that alone is worth it.

I started using HH yesterday, I got gud at it and I never knew it could be so insanely fun to use. I fucking dominate monsters while supporting my team with buffs at the same time, its exhilarating. Encore is godlike too, especially against multiple monsters at once.

There's no level system. The Hunter's Rank is a sense of progress through the content, but it doesn't inherently power you up or anything.

Kirin is the ultimate "no fun allowed" monster when it comes to melee.

The camera is pretty shit even with a second stick because it has such limited vertical range before it awkwardly jerks straight up or down.

The farther up and down angles are bizarre and I haven't found a use for them, true, but I honestly like the "tiered" vertical angles more than the free ones used underwater in 3 or in general from 4 onward.

No, because the game's not based around levels, it's based around skill. Basically pick a weapon, pick a monster branch for that weapon, and use shit you get to upgrade your weapon. Pick up bounties and investigations to speed up the collection progress, Bounties give you armor upgrade items (armor only need you to dump any of your armor spheres into it to upgrade), Investigations allow you to jump right back into a quest and give you extra materials if you do well.

The optimal strategy for fighting monsters for parts is going at them with one or two players, having your Palico equipped with the Plunderblade gadget you get from the Grimalkin sidequests, specifically the Rotten Vale one, but you should do all of them since it opens up solo play, and allows you to get small monsters to assist you. With it equipped you essentially fight solo with no extra party healing, so git gud.

On top of breaking monster parts by targeting specific areas, you also want to capture them, which requires a Shock or Pitfall trap and 2 Tranq Bombs, which you have to craft. Go for the shock trap, because you only need bugs and a trap tool from your base store. Deploy the trap and hit the enemy with 2 tranq bombs to capture it, but only if the monster you're hunting is noticeably limping. Doing all this shit on an investigation hunt gets you ALL OF THE SHIT, and the ones that you'll have trouble getting shit from RNGwise are the Elder Dragons. Zorah Magdoros is probably the easiest one to get shit from because he's a slow ass stage boss, but you can really only fight him when you get to the higher ranks. Loads of weapon branches max out with him and his armor is well suited to critical attacks.

There, easy play guide, and where to start. Get gud and get going. Even a dude with low rank gear can contribute well on a hunt, that's just how the game is.

I could see that. Personally I'm more mad that the gunner variants were not included in some way shape or form. They have those A/B versions of high level armor, but even then those are mostly just minor tweaks to the design like a reply to you said rather than the big alterations that the original gunner/blade sets had. This game really fucked up a whole lot of things the more I think about it. I mean you can still have fun, but the little annoying things add up quickly.

I did..Though it wasn't so much a graphics deal for me. My first MH was the first MH on the PS2. Playing on my handheld wasn't the same as playing on my TV, so I naturally wanted something akin to my original experience. I regret wishing for things like this though. Last one I wished for was to see DoW3 get made, and we all know how that turned out.

So… what is the elderseal for? I managed to make Nergigante's greatsword or greataxe, depending on how you see it and I'm curious what is that stat for and what is effective against.

I might be wrong, but from what I've heard, it's a status effect that negates the unique effects and special auras some dragons have. Once it triggers, it'll temporarily disable Teostra's flame aura, or Kushala's wind aura, for example. I also saw someone say it would stop Nergigante's spikes from hardening, and prevent Vaal Hazak from spreading his fog.

So it is useful only against elder dragons? I'm at rank 14 and I'm on a quest to get all weapon upgrades before stepping further.

Rather than prevent, it removes the ability if they are using it, until they decide to use it again.
Also makes them flinch more often.

It depends on exactly how much raw vs. element you're doing (the numbers the game shows are not trustworthy for this), just how weak they are to that element vs. how weak they are to raw on that part of their body, and if you're going melee, a bit of luck since melee hits only have a 1 in 3 chance of inflicting element damage, hence why people recommend multi-hitters like SnS and DB for them. Bowguns are guaranteed to inflict the element damage with the appropriate shell though, but obviously limited ammunition comes into play. Same applies to status ailments, BTW.

This is incorrect, elemental damage is applied on every hit. I don't understand why people here keep saying this. The things that have a 1/3 chance are the four statuses - poison, para, sleep, and blast - and certain Switch Axe phials - poison, para, and formerly exhaust. World changed this though, and now exhaust phial triggers on all hits in sword mode.
The reason elemental damage is recommended for fast hitting weapons is because it ignores motion values, so assuming identical sharpness and base element value on a weapon, almost every attack across all blademaster weapons is identical for elemental damage; the only exception I'm aware of is that Great Sword's charged attacks get some bonus elemental damage based on charge level, but it's not enough to offset its extremely slow speed. Several fast, weak hits will do far more elemental damage than a single very strong hit, because those weak hits are individually doing just as much elemental damage as that strong hit. Sometimes slower weapons will have a larger base element value to help offset this, such as Lao's GS having over four times as much Dragon as its DBs in XX, but faster weapons still end up doing much more elemental damage in the same amount of time because of their speed.

Most of this thread used to watch his videos till they found out he was a complete shit. so it's possible some stuff people just kind of absorbed without thinking. It most likely just came from the status thing though. Like how plates more likely to drop from captures morphed into captures get you more rewards.

Captures gave less rewards in almost every single game in the series, but occasionally had categories for rare drops or break-only drops, making the cap rewards more useful in a lot of circumstances

No they don't give you more rewards they instead have higher chance for rarer items.
Capture drop tables are different then kill drop tables, the cap table has more rarer items at a higher drop chance then a kill one so if you were hunting for a plate lets say you would want to capture most of the time how ever some drops may be lower in the cap table, the wikia has drop tables for most monsters.

So what's the actual deal with element and status on melee? I believed goyjin for a long time because despite being a fucking moron, usually when just dealing with hard numbers, he was at least useful. Is it just particle effects that only show up 1/3 of the time or something?

I'm having fun trying to create an armor set that gives decent skills without being hideous at the same time and I feel like the new skills system allows for some serious abuse.
For my Teostra SnS I'm running a Zorah set with Teostra gauntlets and Nergigante belt, it gives maxed out blast attack and maxed out weakness exploit (and both works perfectly with the zorah bonus), +5 atk and 2 empty lvl1 decoration slots.
There's also a +1 earplugs coming from somewhere but that's negligible.

Opinions? Suggestions?

You can also upgrade your Felyne's weapons and armours too, when you make your own equipment you get Scrap that can be used to make Felyne equipment you can also turn materials into scrap if needed.

y-you serious? Ok, I'm on my second to last quest of Lv2** village quests, have slain 3 more G. Jaggi, 1 Bulldrome and am now fighting an optional Arzuros. Made a chest armor out of G. Jaggi which brings me great joy, skill bonuses be damned. Gonna go with either a Jaggi or Arzuros armor set for now until I can find a reliable source of resources for tier 3 armor (yellow). Dual Swords are definitely my forte, must be the God of War left overs in my mind while holding a PS2-like controller. Gonna farm some Wroggi too because that poisonous revolver bow looks sick.

Also, bullying limping monsters shouldn't be as satisfying as it is.

Jaggi is good for the Attack Up boost it gives, while Arzuros is Defense Up. Wroggi is a good set to have to because it can negate Poison, which can make some monsters, like Gigginox, that much less of a nuisance.

do I need to bring anything in particular for the Qurupeco fight? I know it's supposed to summon random monsters, but none of the ones in Misty Peaks have any special status inflicting attacks, so no need for antidote, right?

God I hated that feathered fuck when I fought him for the first time. I was pretty new to the game at that point though. Sonic bombs, Dung bombs, and parts of him are sorta tough so just be careful what your hitting if you're bouncing a lot

your dual blades are gonna bounce off his wings, go demon mode often or use another weapon like the GREATSWORD and aim for his ass, face and chest most especially when he puffs up. If you don't have sonic bombs, damage him as much as you can when he sings/calls to interrupt his recruitment or even steal his buffs.

Yeah, definitely. I never had a problem with hitboxes (Plesioth hipcheck aside), and I was fine with Tri's weapon list but my weapons all got in.

Those entires are all still more or less undiluted Monster Hunter, and World isn't. Healing while running and being able to dodge out of anything (Healing, sharpening, GS charge, almost anything at all) is the biggest issue for me. Coupled with a small monster list for any MH that's been localized (because no G version) and some other gripes its definitely the weakest entry to me. I have a thousand other complaints but I don't really feel like I have to learn a monster anymore and I almost never feel intimidated by anything. Yeah, that's partially because I got gud, but after 14 years of playing I've never felt this unengaged with MH, and I'm fighting tempered monsters now (seem like the same with a little more aggression and big dick damage, but I've only fought the first tier so far)

That doesn't mean it has nothing to offer. Lance is more fun than it's ever been, some of the new areas are pretty cool and some of the QoL changes really are for the better. New hardware means new assets. On some level I like how you start off with a very basic weapon and as you upgrade it it becomes cooler instead of starting off with a super cool weapon from the get go. My only legitimate gripe is not every weapon has an ultimate final form. I was pretty passed when I finally unlocked the final tier of Pukei's sword and shield and it looked exactly the same.

That was a theory from when XX's trailer showed a glimpse of its "head" and a leg. It's actually a pile of rubble from old fortresses, towns, and whatever else it happens to pick up. If you look at its design you can clearly see that the main body is the hull of an airship, and it also looks like it has a bit of relatively modern construction material in it, like the support beam Atrul Ka swings around at the start of the fight.

These all look so horrible. They're all the same weapon, with some random monster parts glued on the back in a way that looks cosmetic and nonfunctional. They could have at least glued the monster bits on the face of the hammer, or the edges of the bladed weapons, so that it'd actually look like the parts matter. I can't believe they cut out all the head on a stick hammers, too. You should add Rathalos's hammer to that list, one of the most iconic hammer designs in the series cut. It didn't even get a generic replacement like those three. He doesn't get a hammer at all anymore.

But in searching around I've seen a lot of people saying that the GS, HBG and Hammer were pretty unambiguously the best/highest tier weapons in FU. Obviously every weapon's viable and it's all about what fits your playstyle, but that made me curious as to whether or not other games had weapons that clearly dominated in terms of damage output, killtimes, etc. Any that jump to mind? Also, you may want to consider splashing a bit once you get to fight Great Baggi, since his armor pieces synergize well with Great Jaggi's - by using the Jaggi body and waist with the arms, legs, and (Gunner type) head, I've got a set with Attack Up Medium and Recovery Speed +2, with five single Decoration slots open. You can use them all with Attack Up gems to get up to Attack Up Large, though as a DB user you may benefit more from using them to slot in Speed Sharpening, which reduces the number of times you scrape the blade with the whetstone from 4 to 1, greatly decreasing the amount of downtime you'll spend resharpening.

I don't remember if it's in Frontier or what, but there's a psuedo PvP mode in one of the games where two teams are each in an identical arena and they have the same monster to hunt. First kill wins. It was kind of cool honestly, both of the arenas are divided so you can't really fuck with the other team but you can see the other team and their own monster from your arena

Does anyone else have this problem with item use/healing? I definitely press the button, but some portion of the time I just don't use the item/drink the potion. This has been the most difficult part of the game for me, just standing there when I thought I pressed the button for a potion. My controller's not broken, it works perfectly in other games.

Just repeatedly hit em on the head while playing the notes for your songs dude. I managed to solo nergy in less than 15 minutes with the HH like that. Knockout jewels are also a godsend when using the HH too. Draw attacks are pretty good to start your combos with if you are too pussy to go at em with your weapon already drawn.

The cutscene after you chase off Ceadeus is fantastic and really feels wonderful.

Not bad. You won't go wrong using an entire set of one monster to start off. You're limited and, for the most part, you going to use full sets of one monster to get the skills to activate, using gem slots to either remove negative abilities or enhance ones you already have. Talismans can be a boon to that by unlocking abilities outright, but that's another kettle of fish. Worry about that when you get farther into the game.

Try upgrading your daggers until they have green sharpness if possible. Better sharpness means your attacks will bounce off less and also gives you a boost to damage. Otherwise, you can always try another weapon like gunlance or long sword to reach his head easy.

Hunting horn also doesn't bounce and is the fastest movement speed when drawn, aside from lance's dash. You just have to double-play the self-improvement song.

"ESP" or "Mind's eye" is a skill that lets your weapon ignore monsters' hardness. But the weapons still suffer sharpness reduction as if it bounced, but you get to continue your combo. Some weapons have "esp" as a innate buff in certain moves:
Probably some else too, but I can't remember.

This one actually doesn't get ESP, it just gets treated as if it's one sharpness level higher than the weapon currently is (so if you're green, it counts as blue sharpness for that attack.) I THINK this affects damage as well, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

IIRC qurupeco's flints are hard against slicing, and hammer goes through them with green sharpness.

Some weapons work better against some monsters than others, but everything's killable by anything as long as you're good enough.

Keep it up. That peco went down with ok pace. Experiment more with combos. I don't remember how switch axe was in p3rd anymore, but it increasingly got new morphing combos with each new generation. Meaning mid combo you can press shoulder button to change back to axe or sword to keep up combos and recharging the meter.

Always try what each weapon does with all possible button combinations. MH has pretty many combos even when some aren't really that good for damage.

Man I completely forgot how cool the peco weapons looked like, the hammer is literally a lighter/flint mechanism.

I just started playing hammer and it's a lot of fun. My main strategy is using level 3 charges on the head mashing circle and sliding spin. I'm getting results but I still feel like I am doing it wrong.

Running lvl 2 charge is really good for closing up (dash with uppercut). Normal 3 hit combo deals a lot of damage and stun, so you should prefer that if you can land all 3 hits. If you are playing world, the new combo is also really strong, but long, so use it on downed/trapped monsters.
Hammer is pretty simple weapon, and remember that you don't have to always hit the head. Like barroth's weak spot is the hands so after getting K.O it is better to hit those instead of continuing smashing his head in.

I'm proud of you user. I might have mocked you last time about the G. Jaggi but you took out the Barroth on your first attempt without carting, well done. Seeing an actual human play a game and learning instead of streamer/game journalist sub-humans is refreshing.

I feel like this is the first monster that is this agile and this big, and this damaging. I'm losing half of my health bar and getting shocked/stunned every hit. It's not really a "fast gather", it's about the same speed as crouch gathering used to be, or maybe just a tiny bit faster. In Gen and XX you can hold down the gather button and you'll keep gathering instead of standing up and needing to press the button again, which had a side effect of making ordinary gathering and crouch gathering equally fast now. It's nowhere near as fast as the fast gathering skill.

Not a HH user, but you can upgrade to Barroth armor. It has KO and Flute master isn't really hard to gem or get in a charm. On High Rank you can just make Bone S, then juggle with gems and charms to put KO or Flute Master on any set (Pecco S?) and lastly Diablos S.

XX had a lot of decidedly uncomfy shit in it, like the total lack of the Speed Gather skill. Do you know why they removed it? Because they didn't want hunters to gather in the first place. They wanted all gathering to be done by Nyantas instead, who were given infinite gathering tools and gathered faster by default. Add to that all of the really busted old 2nd gen maps like the volcano and jungle that felt out of place compared to newer maps.

I don't think any MH game has been able to match MH3U for comfiness in gathering.

Please no, knockout king, stamina thief and horn maestro (as part of an armor set and not gems) are all really terrible. If you absolute must have the time boost for your songs instead of mixing recitals into your combos every now and then do what you can to get the gems, they only take up 5 slots and will fit on almost any armor set. Of course the fact that you, as a new player, dealt with zinogre with no previous experience using a HH in bone armor is a testament to how easy p3rd is. Thankfully p3rd is a good entry otherwise and you can just use weaker armor to make up for most of the difference, aside from poor tigrex's missing testicals.
Incidentally the hitbox for zin's breakdance is almost exclusively his tail, you can stand a little bit to his right or just roll forward into him once at the right time and he totally whiffs you. Unless you mean the backflip, that's probably one of his more dangerous moves considering it's relative speed and damage, plus how he likes to always use it as a follow up to something.

They probably just removed it because they're all secretly from the frontier team and hate anything that isn't 4 hunters with 3 layers of moxie using 10+skillset armors fighting monsters that do nothing but spam whole area half minute animation AoEs with one mirrion particle effects for the whole hunt, and as such thought gathering ought to be removed entirely. Frankly nyanters have a really long start up and recovery animation for gathering so even though they get free picks and nets its still a hassle gathering with them
Also: Gathering in any MH with fixed gather points > Gathering in any MH with random gather points. Free hunt was nice though.

You're forgettting that khezu is extremely poison resistant and also flash 'immune'. The question is, khezu normally hunts by smell and goes after prey such as kelbi and aptonoth, subduing them its shocks or swallowing them whole, so would it be able to do anything at all against a tough, rubbery monster? Presumably aptonoth, being cow dinos, smell like shit, and kelbi are mammalian meaning they're definitely easy to track (just like hunters), so would khezu even be able to track a gypceros at all?
The more realistic scenario is that gypceros stands there spamming flash and then performing the special olympics marathon around in circles while khezu spams lightning aoe then just sits on the roof.

I've only gotten it where it refused to drop a thing forever like once a game. 4U being the worst one where the Raging Brachydios refused to drop a single reactor after more than 20 fights. Usually at most it takes like ~10 fights with bad luck.

Story time. Last night me and one of my squad (HR 11) did a high rank Rathian hunt in the Ancient Forest.

I start up in the treetop camp, head straight for the nest. No Rathian, just Rathalos. Whatever, they've both vulnerable to dragon, spit fire and have poison, my gear is good for either or. My squad mate joins in. For some reason, he's in mad love with the zorah insect glaive. And, I've put my pallico into a full zorah set as well. So random explosions all over the place. Then Rathian decided to pick NOW to check on her nest. Two Hunters. Two Cats.Two dragons. Fireballs and explosions everywhere. In the treetop nest of the Ancient Forest.

And then it starts raining exploding scales.

I like all of the new monsters. Especially Bazel. Capcom made us believe they would bring in Deviljho at a later date in order to acclimate they new meat into high rank and they added in a b-52 spirit that can basically one shot your ass into the dirt if you are unprepared for his indiscriminate carpet bombing instead. Bazelguese was the last thing I expected in this game, the fact that there is a possibility of Bazel and Deviljho in one area is too frightening to imagine.

They start appearing after you finish the main quest. In order to get the investigations you need to go on an expedition and look for blue tracks. It's not really worth doing unless you absolutely need money. They only matter after you defeat the tempered kirin assignment at HR49, then locate and defeat any tempered elder dragon investigation tempereds are normal monsters with insane attack stats and they drop stones that let you upgrade your equipment past their maximum limits.

Is to do the weekly quests. I like mostly to take my time before finishing the game, getting all the weapons currently avariable.
