Quests and experience points do not make a game a roleplaying game, encouraging and allowing the player to role play does. In a good RPG you need to allow the player to deal with situations in a variety of ways, which Gothic does a great job of, but also let the player have control of what kind of character they're playing so the player can imprint their decisions onto their character to build them.

For example, if you are able to kill anyone (which you can in Gothic), then you can roleplay as a creepy serial killer, provided that your character isn't voiced and says things that contradict your decision to murder people. Sure you could say that they have some sort of split personality disorder, but that's unnecessarily limiting and not a problem at all if the character isn't voice acted and dialogue options are described in second person instead of being explicitly written out.

People got hyped for Armikrog because they liked Neverhood. These guys don't really have a reputation the way TenNapel did (aside from the autistic attention to detail that went into Mafia 2, maybe).
I'm not sure this game even has potential to be good the way Armikrog did. It looks like one of those games that's so boring that only Germans can enjoy it which is ironic considering the studio is Czech.
