Lets talk about Final Fantasy IX...

Lets talk about Final Fantasy IX. It's been a while since I've played it but after recently completing 10 I'm considering replaying it. I have good memories of this one, even if it can be extremely slow at times. Many of the story moments still come back to me positively and I frequently listen to the music so I'm excited to get into it again.

What's your experiences with the game? Have you got any favorite characters or moments that still come to mind? For me I still mull over Freya's arc despite how short it is, it has so many powerful moments. What's your favorite song in the game?

I still try to sing Melodies of Life when I'm alone.

I should play it again. I think I only ever made it so far the one time I did, and that was back in high school.

I just replayed it. It is very well presented but extremely easy. If you know what you're doing you can have an entire party auto hasted on disc two with no grinding besides friendly monsters.

lets not

Final fantasy is overrated garbage

It's still great, the only issue is the loading times in and out of battle, the battles having a very slow pace and the loading time for attacks in a battle. So basically the biggest issues with this game is the random battle frequency. On an emulator at least you can turbo through the loading.

It was the worst of the PS1 games.

I feel like asking, are you the same guy that made the FFIX thread on /vr/ a few weeks back, and decided to take discussion here since /vr/'s pretty much dead as of now?

I miss /vr/. Or any other video game board having much activity here that isn't named Holla Forums.

Would playing as an eboot on a PSP or something, cutting the physical discs out entirely, help with the loading? Or are the load times just that bad that even then it wouldn't help enough? Just asking since I've heard bad things about the loading issue myself, but am not sure how much faster digital compares to disc in this case.

It's an animation issue, not simply a loading issue, the camera pans and floats and waits as it loads into a fight, that can't be altered.

Nope, that's still VII. Triangular blobs running in slow-motion while waxing philosophical and preaching about the environment in a world full of shallow characters not worth caring about - possibly a clever bit of foreshadowing, as it turned out to be a plot point that characters in FFVII LITERALLY have no souls - and a magic/equipment system that treated your characters as materia containers with no unique skills or characteristics of their own.
It's only thought of as such a classic because it had a big budget advertising campaign that attracted a bunch of cancerous kids who'd never played a JRPG before, and didn't realize that everything good about the game was recycled from earlier chapters in the series.

IX has its problems - intentionally making the card game and some of the quests nonsensical to try and force people to subscribe to Square's stupid online service being chief among them - but it's far from the low point of the series. It was supposed to be the apology for the mistakes of 7 and 8. And while it's not perfect, at least the world is interesting and colourful, your characters are more than just item slots, the plot is actually coherent, and the game is nice to look at.

Also, Garnet's ass >>>> Tifa's tits.

...

Please continue, it entertains me.

Comfy game. Comfy art style.

It's an homage to IV.

never played 9
is it worth playing 9 in current year on an emulator?

1X has zero staying power compared to V11 or V111
Outside of Vivi, the characters aren't memorable. The story and world are so bland that nobody would be able to tell you what the game was about years later.
Compared to the two previous entries, it falls flat in just about every category. It did have good music though.

tfw someone else is this autistic

Nah, I think I'm done. That's basically all my problems with VII condensed into two paragraphs, which is probably why it came across so intensely salty. Glad it gave you a laugh though.
I think my hate for it mostly stems from how disappointed I was with it as a kid, since it felt like a major step down in almost every way from the previous two games - combined with the intense love and nostalgia it gets from what seems like most gamers nowadays. (From my perspective, Final Fantasy peaked with 4 and has never come close since, though 8 was a nice try.)

It's funny and a little sad that those same fans then got the same experience I had with 7 with 8, where they were all triggered by everything being different from 7 - not knowing that's how it is with every Final Fantasy game.

It is true that the last boss is a bit of an asspull, so much so that I'd actually forgotten it happened; for me the real climax of the game was what happened afterwards. I think the final boss fight was just there because there needed to be a big final battle to conclude the game, but it really did just pop up for no good reason.

I'd argue that Ultimecia and Zeromus weren't "out of nowhere", though. Zemus was established going into the third act as the ultimate evil, and Zeromus wasn't so much a bait-and-switch final boss as a "final form" that you skipped straight to on account of Team FuSoYa taking out his first form for you.
Ultimecia felt like an attempt to replicate Zemus, though who she was and what her goals were are so poorly defined that it launched a thousand crazy fan theories. But as an explanation for why Edea turned evil and an excuse for a final dungeon and boss fight, she was fine.

I was grateful that they at least made the effort, because I still remember how disappointed I was as a kid when I made it to the end of Final Fantasy 6 (then 3), eagerly anticipating finding out who the REAL bad guy was who'd been manipulating that stupid gay clown, and how we'd probably have to go to the World of the Espers to fight him… and then being really confused when the end credits started rolling.

No way 9 was worse than 8.

8 was fine until that underground alien principal, I wish it would have been more centered around being a mercenary.

user, for the love of God, please. Your use of 1 where you should be using I is making me disregard literally everything you say.

user it's a joke. Some fool made a thread a few days ago talking about Final Fantasy X11

Anyway, I'm surprised to see so many people shitting on 9. I thought nearly everyone agreed that 8 is the worst of the PS1 titles.

9 is good if you though 7 and especially 8 were too serious and edgy. 9 goes back to a whimsical fantasy world and takes place in the same universe as the first installment in the series. Don't know if there are any other numbered FF games that do this.

I missed that thread. Regardless, even if it's done intentionally as a joke, it annoys me on a level I can't justify.

More on topic, VIII is the only PS1 FF that I never finished and have never desired to finish. I hated the Junctioning system, I didn't like any of the characters, I had too much trouble making sense of the story and most of it seemed like random bullshit. IX had its issues, but at least most of the characters were likable if not particularly interesting and I always understood exactly where I was in the story, up until the last hour or so.

Get fucked.

I said I can't justify the level of annoyance, not that I can't put the reasoning into words.

But then I guess I can't expect someone who isn't even capable of basic reading comprehension to understand something like that.

Great game systems and world.

Unfortunately the game just drops the ball with character threads at the mid-point and the whole plot once we get to the end of the game.

The bosses are leveled to your level which can be completely independent of your stats.

Nigga it's the easiest FF game if you're not brain damaged.

What the fuck, I've been playing this for the past week and I never would have guessed there'd be a thread about it.
Most of the music is alright compared to other entries in the series, but the regular battle theme is a total fucking banger.
Game's pretty easy though, especially if you do sidequests.
Character progression overall isn't too interesting, since it boils down to what items everyone's worn so far. The game absolutely excels in its atmosphere, though.

And it's also fucking trash.

I remember it being an utter chore. It was slow and extremely dull. The characters were paper thin, i don't remember a single thing about the story except the generic bad-guy switcharoo later on.
Technically it's a mess with the loading times and framerate being even worse than FF8 which was already a disaster. The music was also worse too. FFVII was the last good one - They had used up all their ideas by the time that was done.

You can be a soulless generic husk if you want, I guess, but even with the flaws IX has I don't know how anyone can't at least enjoy it. It's super comfy and I would love to see a new FF in the same manner today. If they didn't go for the chibi celebratory look, I think most people would remember the more brutal parts better. Kuja is fucking savage when you think about it.

I loved it.
But each disc was a bit shitter than the last.

This.
FF IX was at its best when it was about a group of likeable characters thrown into some hot mess that they had to get out of and wasn't about saving the world from space jews or whatever the bearded guy was.
It had great visuals, good music (the battle theme was really mediocre though) and a lot of comical dialogue that truly made the world feel alive.
Hell, even small things like being able to see what the other characters were up to elsewhere while you were exploring a town was an amazing detail that allowed for some fun sequences.

Honestly, the whole idea of being this miraculous saviour never felt very interesting and I don't get why Japs don't just make JRPGs that have nothing to do with that.

No, you wouldn't.
I don't think they'd be able to make something like that even if they truly tried.

I want to hug freya and make her happy.

no, I'm the guy who made the blitzball thread here a few weeks ago.

I know, and it's unfortunate.

they do, one that comes to mind is panzer dragoon saga where you, the player, are the holy spirit interacting with the father and the son in an attempt to weave the world away from certain destruction

Freya and Beatrix were such great girls, I don't think any other FF came even close to either of them.

It's in the backlog, I'll get to it some day.

It seems that a lot of the FF games just get laughably easy if you do all the sidequests. Especially so on a lot of the remakes for the older games.

This was either done by Ken Akamatsu someone who has his style down to a fucking T.

The fuck is this shit

This is good,i never knew i would find rats sexy.

My dick can’t handle these levels of ==MUH==

Sorry my dudes, but I'll have to drag you into the ovens myself when day of the rope comes. We can burn together.

Yea it's pretty dissapointing. I was hoping for some quality rat poon. Instead I got some offbrand love hina tier shit.

Eh,i don't think finding drawn fictional rats sexy is that heretical

There is no better shota in FF than Vivi. Puck if you're a furry.

SNOUT ALERT

...

That settles it, you're going to the gas chambers and then in the oven for good measure.
.

There is only one good thing about FF9

Okay but can i get some more decent lewds before i burn at least.

Indeed.

...

You always were one.

Freya and Beatrix are great. Garnet's ass is queen though, and she's sweet and adorable too.

Eiko a cute. The cooking "minigame" and meal was really comfy.

Oh yes, Garnet and Eiko were really good too.
Eiko will never marry you.

What were they saying when vivi saw his best friend bang another one of his close friends?

stop posting shit art and get some fucking taste, you disgust me

Vivi: What were you two doing naked?
Zidane: Well, that is…
Freya: Tactical discussion!
Zidane: Right! Discussion!

Holla Forums the place for the professional contrarian.
Where one cites an opinion and another cites the opposite just for the sake of being a contrarian.

You can't have an actual conversation about a game here, because you have Soyboys who just want to shout their opinion is superior. Blah blah, glug glug, Soy boy drink you Soy milk, time for tappy drink.

I guess if I were to choose one FF from the playstation, I'd choose 9.

8 started off really good, but then it all got convoluted what with space aliens, amnesia, playing as Laguna.

7 is really just okay.

Hoo boy, here we go. I really wished I liked FFIX, but I realised just don't overall.

The characters are probably one my biggest gripes. I cannot stand the main characters at all. I fucking hate cocky Zidane, and Garnet's only likable trait is her ass. However, half of the game is spent fucking around their with tsundere romance. Even when major shit is happening, like the rat kindgom getting genocided, we cut just have to cut back to watching the two piss around. I didn't feel for them a single bit. Also some characters just fucking shouldn't exist like edgemaster Amarant and that fat tub of shit that only shit that only shows up when you need a filler party member.

The characters like I do like just get fucked. Freya got to see her whole race nearly wiped out and her love interest fucked off. Then she does basically nothing for the remainder of the story. Eiko is cute, but you already know it's never going to happen for her. WHY WOULD YOU PUT LOLI NTR IN YOUR GAME FUCK YOU

The battles just waste your time with a combination of catastrophic PS1 load times in and out of every single battle and every spell taking like 10 seconds to cast. Gaining abilities feels like it should be tactical than it is, but it's just brainless. Each character can only equip certain items and learn certain skills anyway, so it never feels like you're building a character the way you want. Thankfully the FFTactics series fixed this system.

The graphics and style are neat, though, considering this is the same platform FFVII is on. They came a long from that triangular turd. I like FFIX's focus on a more traditional fantasy setting compared to VIII, but I just never really fell in love with it.

Don't you dare talk about quina like that, and if you're talking about Steiner than you can just fuck right off.
This is correct.

stop that, do not post porn. it is degenerate.

Fuck off /monster/.

Freya is for vanilla. Sindoll's art is great but I can't get into it because everything has to be a degrading gangbang.

...

They're the most out of the box powerful characters though. Steiner will always hit 9999 mid disc 3 and Quina can hit it on disc 1 with Limit Glove, which you can get immediately once she joins.

/monster/ should be renamed /denial/

Casual

Thanks for that, made a few negative space wallpapers

Did I miss something?

MP Attack.

Looks like there's plenty of space.

Plus Whatever Killer, right? I've only got him to 6000 damage and I just got to the Forbidden Continent. Not like it matters since the game is so easy anyway.

Yeah, to say nothing of his endgame skills which just kill everything. Everyone else has to at least work for their nukes, Steiner just gets his by default by virtue of hardly ever being playable.

you got me there

...

Never 100% the game and found the extra backstory on Kefka in the Empire's HQ, did you?

Freya is a good girl don't be mean to her she's been through enough.

Well pretty much this really.

I really like that is has a more down to earth medieval theme, instead of the scifi magitech in the other Final Fantasy games and that they decided to give more shit about the world the story is set in.
The characters really feel like they are native to the world and beholden to its laws and society and not just a hodge podge of character concepts that looked cool and edgy to the artist.
I am a fan of the relationship between Kuja and Queen Brahne, its a great story how an Armsdealer manipulates a grieving Widow Queen into throwing herself into Illusions of grandeur and martial conquests, which ends up with her leading the Kingdom into starting a World War. You can see how Alexandria is in no shape to fight a war with other nations with its all female Army and the Knights of Pluto having been reduced to a joke from an Elite Unit in the past and now they are given those weapons, that basically allow them to genocide the whole continent.
I would really wish for a tactical game set in the FF9 Universe or a Sequel which revolves around the relationship between the people after the war.
The menu theme.

I actually like that, the world is in danger so the characters pull themselves together and ignore their personal problems for a time.

Won't question your shit tastes, but just sayin'

Solution 9 >>>>>> * except the power ranger megazord attack.

What's wrong with Zidane? He just wants to drift around and screw random sluts.

Why? 4 is one of the worse ones, you play it once and forget about it. The gameplay was restrictive and the story was clearly being made up as they were writing it - for all the flak I've seen other FFs get for their stories, I'm amazed that most people pass over 4.

That is Akamatsu. He did FF books before he broke big with Love Hina, though LH wasn't his first real breakout work (Ai Love You or someshit).

I wish FF9 didn't get rushed, so they could've had more time to expand on Mikoto.

Absolutely did, but having "something in his mind snap" due to evil Magitek experiments doesn't make him any less of a gay clown. Also Kefka going crazy didn't necessarily mean he hadn't been possessed by some ultimate evil entity from the Esper realm or somesuch.

It just seemed like such a letdown after 2/4, where you went from your world to the underworld to the moon, with the stakes constantly escalating, while in 3/6 it was just "this guy's evil, we gotta kill him" the whole time.
It even kind of DE-escalated - at the start of the game there was an evil empire that had already conquered most of the world versus your plucky little band of rebels, but by the end it was just one idiot in a magic tower shooting lasers at random.
Basically, Kefka always seemed like "goofy comic relief sidekick" and not a real villain, and I was constantly waiting for his much cooler supervisor who never showed up.

I'm sure a lot of it has to do with being like 12 when it came out, but 4 was amazing at the time.

Come to think of it, it's probable by now that 4 suffers from the Maltese Falcon Effect. ("Why does everyone think this is such a classic? Literally every part of the story is a cliche!")

I wouldn't call FF4 cliched, just drab and dumb. Cecil had a decent character arc, but it was resolved by the time he became a Paladin and the rest of the game was just about stopping some evil badass.
BUT WAIT, he's not just a badass, but he was being mind controlled by a lunarian supremacist from another planet, and he's actually related to the main character, and ALSO half-alien, and not even evil! He redeems himself and goes to sleep because he's a naughty boy. Does any of that contribute to Cecil's development? Not really, because he instantly forgives Golbez for everything he did without hesitation like the paladin he is.
The only other two characters who are even sort of memorable are Kain, because he's a dipshit who gets mind controlled every 5 minutes, and Rydia, because she's a loli who grows up into a bombshell with huge tits summons.

PS. Going to the moon was retarded and came out of nowhere. It was basically endgame padding.

Kefka became a true nihilist after he snapped. There was no cliche bullshit reasoning for his hatred of everything. He wasn't possessed, he didn't want power or to become a god. He just wanted to destroy everything as revenge for the magitek infusion fucking his head up.

I really loved FF9 but somehow ended up not finishing it, I quit when Zidane discovered his origin. I emulated the game many years after its initial release, but loved almost every second of it. Story was kinda weird with some poor writing here and there which actually really bugged me, but the characters, oh lord, the characters. Fantastic cast. I was very fond of Freya, loved Vivi, and Beatrix stole my heart the moment she one shot my party for the first time. I had a hard time deciding who to take into my party. The chocobo minigame, frogs, and treasure hunting was also really fun.

Something I'll never forget is the rat people genocide and Kuja's raid on the city, Bahamur, Alexander, and all. Maybe I should play and finish it on PC now that there's a port.

Since You're not Alone was already posted.

...

Her fault for being born as a rat tbh

You know, the scripted end of the battle when she Climhazzards you.

Oh, I thought you meant she one shot you without the scripted sequence. She always talked a big game, but I could've taken her every single time, no problem.

I love it. It's my favorite of the mainline games. The characters and story are just the best of the whole series. I love the way it threads all the various plots. Some FF games try to rollercoaster you which gets annoying very quick (looking at you, 6), but with 9 I never seemed to mind.

I think I'd probably be good friends with Zidane and Vivi if they were real; I can't say that with many characters from any media. The way Steiner changes from douche to honorable bro was probably my favorite character arc ever. Moments? Too many to list all of them. First that comes to mind is frog cid saving the group in the sand palace.

The thing I must protect. The garland music, zidane's emo trip music, the snowy pilgrimage town music, the dali theme, and of course black mage village are great too. Oh, and the last boss music.

It's because FF4 is based a lot on the Adventures of Baron Munchausen, which also has a random moon segment, with Uma Therman.

Heh
inb4 youre one of those "Holla Forums was always furry" fucks

kys

The problems I have with 9 are the same problems I have with most FF games anyways. Missables, retarded arbitrary things to do to get said missables. I do like some of the mini games, the card game, but fuck some of the bs that pops up later. The setting is rather nice and I enjoy how some classes combine. Zidaine is a terrible MC. Every other character is more interesting. Worst bad guy. Worst side bosses. Ozma I'm looking at you.

kys honest tbh fam fam fam tbh wtfbbq??
