They really, really do not even understand the simple basics if you bother looking at a majority of the shit churned out these past few years. Take a quick gander over on steam on the section regarding Indie games and the like and you will find that the vast majority of them fall into the category of "Spoopy First Person Adventure with screamers and a flashlight". Bad gameplay could be somewhat forgiven if given a great soundtrack and amazing story ; after all, look at KOTOR2, but these people are unable to do even that. You don't even need anything fucking revolutionizing to make an enjoyable game, hell look at shit like Sengoku Rance, Renowned Explorers, and Furi to name something off the top of my head. Their gameplay is simplistic as fuck but its very enjoyable.

Most people who create this kind of shit are just either lazy hacks who want a cheap buck, are delusional children who think they can be the next big thing in vidya, are utterly fucking incompetent in all they do and pollute the end product, or all of the above.

Story is really enjoyable so far. Plays kind of like a visual novel.

not really. the game takes place in a town with a dying economy (was a mining town, but the mines are closed) and talks about people with troubled family life and such.

the protags mom fell for a financial scam, one family couldn't make their mortgage and lost a house, and other characters are poor too. it's small town troubles. also most of the young adult characters either don't have jobs, or are bad at it. only one is being a responsible adult but spends the whole game bitching about how much she hates it.

besides, i haven't played NITW but there was clearly a lot of effort put into a decent style and the dev did a nice job adapting it to an interactive medium, in comparison most AAA games are the same generic themes coated in a blurry vaseline smear of post-processing, no one cares about how cool it actually looks, they just want to sate their autism over texture resolution and polycount. fallout 4's strong visuals and sound don't change the fact that it's a boring overpriced mod platform for example, and as much as i love borderlands' art direction the gameplay is mostly very frustrating after the first game to the point where TFTB felt like more of a game not to mention the writing by the biggest literal and figurative cuck in existence
