Safe Mode Games (a special kind Toaster Thread)

Soooo I'll be stuck with a shitty PC with 1GB RAM, windows 7 and an integrated graphics card without proper drivers.
This thing freezes if I try to run it normally, It only works on Safe Mode. It freezes even then if I try to watch youtube videos on fullscreen on safe mode, it's mostly the graphic card's fault, I think.
Just formatting is not an option for now.
So what are some games that can run on this monster?
I already tried and succeded in playing Elona, altough it has low performance, that's already a big hurrah.
I could also run some .swf files successfully. So maybe some low-spec games would work nice?
I already tried and failed to run SNES emulators, might try some NES and GBC ones later.
Embed related was a nice guide I used when braving this machine, very helpful. I also managed to enable the 360 Controller driver in using this method, no services needed.

In almost the same boat here. PC broke and I dragged out my shitty laptop. Outside is currently under nearly a foot of snow and ice. Gonna be this way for probably at least a week. I'll probably just watch anime or something over the week.

Well you re limited to classic games in emulators or rpg maker tier games on PC that's your choice user, you can also try playing True Love 95 or something

kys. You can probably run more games on Linux with that toaster than Windows. Also, you can get a better machine for free or nearly free.

How about getting in touch with a penguin for your broken toaster?

Use zsnes. Ignore the memes about it, I used it successfully on a 486 DX2.
Figure out what is necessary to expedite that since you're too stupid to unfuck Windows.

Anything pre 2000

What CPU/GPU is it?

you can get a 1GB Intel Atom board for like 100 bucks and can probably still play more games than whatever you have because at least the latest Intel HD series chips are fucking something. We're stuck with muh 30 percent until AMD re-boots the E-series APUs fam

I think he can go up to 2004 or so actually

Have fun

he can't even run SNES simulators

emulators not simulators fuck me

He should be able to?
My shitty 60$ smartphone can run SNES emulators and it has 1 GB of RAM

Well, your shitty Smartphone has at least some kind of GPU, the OP isn't even telling us what fucking hardware he has

Even my 100 dollar Intel Atom board can play TF2 at medium settings at 60+ FPS.

You're not wrong. OP needs to stop being a faggot, that would help a lot

I guess I could try watching some shit in it, I'll download some anime that are in my backlog.

NES games aren't working, gonna try GBC later. I was going to try Rance 4, the next on my Rance list, but it requires the automatic installation of some .dlls and japanese locale. Snes9x couldn't even locate DirectX's .dll,I not even gonna bother risking fucking up this PC even more.

Except this Computer's hardwares do not have drivers for windows7 and 64bit shit. It's not my PC, it's owner was very clueles and kept it stored as "broken" until I rescued it.

I plan on Formatting it and installing good old XP 32bit, but for now I can't, I still need to back up old photos that are in here and I don't have the equipment necessary to do so here with me.

zsnes ran verrrry slowly.

Again, unless I run it on safe mode, it doesn't work, so the PC is very limited.

CPU is Intel Core 2 Duo, not that bad.
I'm trying to identify the integrated graphics card, Speccy only tells me 128MB since it doesn't have proper drivers.

Aaaand here's the "GPU":
Integrated 128-bit VIA VN896™ (VIA Chrome9™ IGP)
A fucking beast.
Wouldn't be so bad if I could get some proper drivers for it. Windows 7 keeps automatically installing generic drivers for it and it doesn't work well. I also tried downloading the recommended drivers for windows 7 from the sellers's site, didn't work. In fact, I don't even know if it installed correctly, apparently just some software was installed and runs, but it appears to still be using the generic drivers.

Hehm you're fucked m8, you'd have better luck with DOS

That said, the Core2Duo isn't terrible, if you had a modern GPU in there it would be fairly capable, you'd get bottlenecked hard by the CPU but you could likely pull off a lot of modern titles. I know people who still rock a C2D

Your solution is here, now you just have to be smart enough to use it.

Disable windows update, install drivers manually from the chipset manufacturer's website. i.e. if you have a Dell laptop with Intel integrated graphics, figure out what chipset exactly and get the drivers from Intel.

You are probably better off on XP. If you can get the graphics drivers working you should be good with older 3D games and emulating everything up to PS1 or so. That is, assuming your laptop (?) doesn't have deeper hardware problems. You should probably clean the dust out of it with some compressed air while you are at it, overheating is a serious problem for craptops.

RELEASE THE LEGION

Thanks for looking out for me.
Turns out I was browsing that page just before re-checking the thread.
Apparently there is no driver for this specific graphics card on Windows 7, only XP.

I tried turning off the update thing, then unninstalling the graphic driver, but it still automatically installs it when I reboot. Doesn't matter, there's no proper driver for windows 7 anyways. I'll have to wait and install XP on it when I can.
I'll remember to clean it later, too.

It's a miracle that it can run Elona, then again, the game has practically no animations.
I wonder what other games don't need any graphic card at all, though.

I guess you weren't smart enough after all.

WTF? What didn't I notice?
Again, my card is "128-bit VIA VN896™ (VIA Chrome9™ IGP)".
Windows 7 is only showing CN896.

Ok, now I'm getting really curious and also furious.

just like, get the drivers man, you have little to lose tbh

Goddamit.
I'd totally miss this shit if you didn't push me, thanks. I'll try installing it in a bit.

Hey fagola i was daydreaming and just now that you can just make a linux USB and boot from that and maybe you will be back to normal, except using linux from an USB is slow as fuck but it's way better than being stuck in safe mode

Wipe that piece of shit laptop and install a lightweight linux distro. Then install a Window Manager like xmonad or someother shit and skip all the Gnome/KDE garbage. You'll have a system that idles at like 60MB of ram. That old gpu of yours should be supported, the linux kernel has good support for a lot of old hardware.

How does his laptop even run with Windows 7 installed? Even a bare Win7 install uses more than 1GB of ram; the constant read and writes to and from swap would make it unusable.

I dunno but by 1.6ghz 1gb atom cpu netbook runs Xfce just fine, and hosts my diablo 2 and quake servers

Don't be a dick. He could use snesGT on that thing and it's a million times better than zsnes and even more accurate than snes9x.

Hey that's not so b–

You're fucked. Even if the integrated graphics work you'd be fucked.

I've ran Windows 7 on PCs with 512MB RAM before. It's possible, but the PC is practically nonfunctional.

Windows 8 Embedded was my go to OS for shit computers, but it's not supported anymore unfortunately.

Is zsnes bad? It's the only snes emulator I've used. The autopatch feature it has is pretty nice, I play a lot of nip games that never got a NA release.

I have no answers or suggestions for you, user.

Only my condolences.

I have an atom n455 if i am not mistaken it's one of the worst cpus ever made, i can get this thing to run Xubuntu Core and play Snes and Nes games but what makes it shit the bed is that the weak processor can barely handle OpenGL which is what every linux emulator uses. These processors actually do benefit from running shit in DirectX, somehow emulators run twice as better in directX than they do in OpenGL.
The same applies to other toaster tier Cpus with IGPUs like the Intel GMA series

how is that possible, windows 7 embedded is still supported

I deed it Holla Forums.
Installed the VIA driver over the default windows one. Screen got a tiny bit darker when I rebooted but it just works.
dxdiag now shows that it has Direct3d and shit enabled and I've ran ZSNES successfully.
I'm worried that I can't access the hardware acceleration menu anymore, that's what I used to stop the crashing on non-safe mode, but I guess it's alright as long as I don't get crashes.

I know, the PC runs slow as fuck in non-safe mode. Avast sure as hell doesn't help.
My goal is still formatting later to a 32 bit Windows XP.

Why are you using an antivirus, specially one that constantly keeps scanning your shit? that's surely making your toaster a lot slower.

You don't need an AV as long as you are not being stupid and entering a wormhole of porn websites or downloading pirated games from dubious websites.

Uninstall that shit ASAP.

Then it crashed while browsing and downloading shit from MEGA. Back to safe mode it is.
Maybe I'll try to atually clean install the driver rather than installing it over the windows driver one, but I'll try that tomorrow.

user, you're overextimating me.
I am considering unninstalling it, though, especially since it doesn't even run in safe mode. Then maybe just use the Windows Defender thing. Is it worth anything?

About as much as Avast, which is to say not a lot but at least it's lighter.

ZSNES is very inaccurate. It's been hacked up beyond belief to play the most popular games adequately, but it still has big problems with more obscure games, all kinds of graphical and sound glitches and game breaking bugs, and it hasn't been updated in over a decade. Modern snes9x is significantly more accurate and almost as fast. There's no reason to use ZSNES today.

Antivirus does jack shit and murders your performance. Your PC is shit as it is, don't make it even worse.

With all of your problems I think you should do a fresh XP install, assuming you don't want to go the Linux route that is your best bet.

Why not upload the stuff you need to backup somewhere and get busy installing a more suitable OS? You could probably do a parted 7-zip archive so it doesn't eat your WAM up.

Microsoft dropped support to force people to use 8.1. Unfortunately 8.1 has new processor requirements so their only option is 7 or buying a new PC.

that's about what my gaming PC goes up to
it's on XP and has 516 MB of RAM

Lmao. I am so glad I can afford good shit so that I don't have to be stuck with a pauper's rig like yours

doesn't win 7 need 2GB minimum though?

You'll probable get more mileage out of It with a persistent LiveCD on a USB stick or similar, specially in regards to emulation. Or at least you'll get to know a bit about using penguins while trying.
