The problems run deeper than just the microtransactions (D2's weapon changes, mods, reward system, nonexistent talent trees, lackluster PVP options, no LFG system), but the microtransactions are an obvious complaint and easier to fix, mostly because a lot of the solutions are shit they did in the first game and somehow forgot by the time they got around to developing the second:

This on top of the obvious "add more cosmetics that don't involve money you fucking assholes" and a good chunk of the community's ire would wash away. As I said, there's still a huge share of problems with the game, but they can start with the easiest, most visible stuff.

But they won't. The game is built around lootboxes, it's why it exists. They're not selling a game as much as they are selling you access to the store so you can give them more money for fucking jpegs. The game is lackluster in both content and mechanics specifically because of this.

And apparently that was due to yet another behind-the-scenes shakeup that more or less rebooted development at a late stage.
