"LawBreakers, Cliff Bleszinski’s hero shooter that initially targetted the PC audience only before coming out on PS4, is not looking good at all. Nexon has just written down this shooter and from the looks of it, it will not further fund its development.
As the publisher noted in its Q3 2017 earnings report:
“Impairment loss is included in other expense. In Q3, impairment loss related to LawBreakers accounts for the majority of the total other expense. We will not accrue any more impairment loss pertaining to LawBreakers.”
Furthermore, Nexon blamed PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds for LawBreakers’ low sales. According to the publisher, PUBG released at the same time with LawBreakers, something that had a huge – negative – impact to the sales of Boss Key’s shooter.
“Our results in North America in the third quarter were below our outlook, mainly due to the sales from LawBreakers being below our expectations. LawBreakers is a unique FPS developed for core users. We had very high expectations for its launch; however, the timing of its launch turned out to be unfortunate, specifically the blockbuster PC online game PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds came out right about the same time, making the market environment very tough for first-person shooters in general and for LawBreakers.”
Naturally this seems more like a PR statement than an honest opinion as PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and LawBreakers are two entirely different first-person games.
It will be interesting to see what will happen to LawBreakers and whether Boss Key will be able to turn the tide!"
