It's really not. VRchat is a hive of reddit-tier autists and le epic memers; they are a completely derivative parody of imageboard culture. You could say that imageboards were derived from text based bulletin boards and early internet forums, but the culture itself was grown from users who were hobbyists of the internet and anime in general. I don't think VRchat can be the kind of platform that would be able to recreate imageboard culture as it is already cancerous. I wish. It's really dumb conceptually, because why would we need immersive 3D virtual environments to surf the net when all we do is read text and watch videos? There's no benefit to doing it that way; it's just more cumbersome and no one's going to want to strap on a headset when looking at a phone is faster. Even so I think the idea of it is really cool. It'd be fun to chill out in vr chans and shoot the shit with people. Who knows, maybe if there's some actual benefit to vr surfing to regular browsing it could catch on.

Reminds me of that shitty 3D web browser I used to dick around with. I think Sony made it, with the basic idea that in the future - you wouldn't go to a website. You'd have a "virtual space" that you'd go to. So instead of just going to someplace like Amazon and clicking on a music CD to purchase it… you'd have a virtual store you could walk around in and pick up virtual representations of the CDs, then take them to a virtual store clerk for checkout. Or your personal website would literally be a house you could design.

I can't remember the name of it, but I'm pretty sure the concept ended up getting spun off into Playstation Home after Second Life started to become a phenomena, since they had absolutely zero luck trying to push it as a new internet standard. Or maybe it was only ever just a proof of concept shit with a public demo.

The "DJ" in the second webm is Chipz, and he's actually performing the song. He's apparently a really good singer (first webm related, from his stream). He's also the guy in the first webm from my previous post. The main issue there is that he hangs out with a group of roleplayers, but he's not actually roleplaying. This girlfriend of his (Nuts, webm 2 related) is roleplaying a crazy chick and he's trying to play along, but since he's just being himself instead of, you know, roleplaying, it always ends in an awkwardgeddon (webm 3 related).

It's all quite fascinating, really.

How hard is rigging models for VRChat in general? I'm reading up documents and tutorials on rigging because I don't like mixamo and if we would all try this out, i'd try the custom animations too.

That sounds cool, but I probably wouldn't boot up my VR headset to purchase music. Even if I was already in VR I'd probably just have a popup webpage in front of me anyway. The personal website/home thing would be a big hit though. Have it be a virtual space you can customize would be a lot of fun for people who like to collect or create virtual items that they can decorate with.

It was cool, in concept. The execution was terrible though. VR wasn't even a consideration. It was like having a Quake III level as a webpage, which made everything a pain in the ass to virtually walk to as a way to mimic physical space, webpages took for-goddamned-ever to load since most people outside of major cities were still on 56k dial-up at the time, and there wasn't a good way to search for these kinds of websites. You had to know the URL beforehand. Plus you run into a lot of the same problems with adoption into the general market that you get with games - namely overly complex controls necessary to navigate a 3D space compared to the relative simplicity of just point and clicking with a mouse. Never mind how they'd manage to represent all those people who go to a website simultaneously. Imagine the toll on your hardware if you walk up to a virtual ticketmaster counter to buy a concert ticket, and it's just a massive blob of character models clipping into an amorphous mass as 10,000 people are trying to check out the same time you are. I'm sure they'd have a way to cull other users from being rendered on local machines so as not to tax hardware and bandwidth too much, but that'd kill the social aspect of web browsing that was being envisioned. Either that, or you'd end up having to run your e-shop like an online game with matchmaking servers.
