No discussion on Dusk releasing episode 2 at Christmas?

Dusk is a modern game using Quake 1 style graphics and gameplay. Pretty much hits it spot on and is a lot of fun if you're looking for that sort of thing.

It's not!early access but the first 2 episodes are 20 levels in total and feel like a finished well polished game so far. Contains the usual Doom style assortments of wall humping secrets, bunny hopping and shotgunning fireball shooting wizard fucks.

Multiplayers in closed beta right now but looks pretty good from what I've seen. Definitely has potential for a Holla Forums game night of red neck run and gunning.

The first episode doesn't contain all the enemies or all the weapons. Episode 1 of Doom doesn't contain everything either. Nor does Quake.

It's probably the best "le old school" shooter from the past, oh I don't know, 10 or more years but that really isn't saying much. Remember STRAFE? That's how low the bar is.

Episode 1 was alright but they were always cramming too many secrets anywhere they could. They really should not have given you the super shotgun on level 1, and I don't like the secrets that skip most of the level.
I'm in the middle of Episode 2 and I think everything's a bit better. Better atmosphere, more enemy variety, and the levels are doing some really trippy shit. Everything's pretty fun so far and I think the game will be pretty decent.

Not really, the whole idea behind the name pixelshit is that snes era titles did not use its hardware limitations as an excuse to be lazy and the pixelart back then looked way better than what a lot of modern day indie developers do.

Dusk on the other hand does seem to be a very faithful recreation of how shooters from the 90s looked. Albeit the game lets you play at far better resolutions than what was available back then.

levels in Dusk are more open because most enemies fire (comparatively) fast projectiles, so having more space to move around in is appreciated, though there's not enough enemies on screen at once

I like the Shotgun sound effects and animation but the rest looks pretty boring to be honest.

Episode 2 starts with like 10 guys shooting at you at once and keeps throwing hordes at you. Friendly fire makes it difficult to make rooms too big and actually mean something.

One problem with Doom is that people see a room full of enemies and they just circle them until most are dead from infighting. It makes those big rooms pretty meaningless. Dusk would suffer the same problem.

I would've been a lot more lenient with dusk if it weren't for the fact that they distributed it to all the e-celebs before making it publicly available.

Of course you don't have to imitate Doom or Quake's level design, even stringing together some open spaces can work if your enemy encounters are designed well and the pacing is good (see Serious Sam). From al the footage I've seen on here and Youtube, Dusk's maps and enemy encounters have nothing going for them. There's room to move, enemies to shoot, pathetic "secrets", and absolutely nothing else: the level designer doesn't have a feel for his own game and just shat out some environments without putting any thought into it. Every single aspect of Dusk's design is as cynical and soulless as an EA executive dreaming about microtransactions.

Serious sam is not good. It's just a slaughter map where you circle strafe endlessly and get bored. The only thing that makes it fun is playing with a group of buddies at a lan party and even then that's mostly being sleep deprived and being around other people to shit talk.

The point is that even Serious Sam's slaughter maps have care and design put into them, even though they aren't everyone's cup of tea. Dusk's maps don't have anything but the bare minimum of "let's make some rooms and put enemies in them, then put some other rooms in this corner and call them secrets." They're inexperienced newfag-tier maps tied to some dull enemies and sold as a product.

Yeah, most of Serious Sam's arenas are empty rooms but the point is that the enemy spawns and waves are well-designed. I get slaughter maps not being your thing but for people who don't mind them, Serious Sam does them well.

Describing in detail why a level is mediocre or the bland kind of shit is much more difficult than critiquing an excellent or an awful map because nothing really stands out. Being a mapper or an architect would really help but I don't have much experience with either.

If you want modern Quake play Arcane Dimensions or other modern Quake maps. AD is particularly neat as it adds stuff like destructible brushes, fugtons of new enemies, an even beefier shotgun and a neat plasma cannon thing. Seriously it's basically my favorite FPS. The majority of the maps are fucking huge and full of architecture porn.

If you check the Steam forums, at least one of Dusk's devs (Dave Oshry) is listed as a Pixel Pushers developer. My guess is that Pixel Pushers is a separate dev team he's part of and Dave using Dusk's popularity to push his antifa side project.

Either way, a good portion of each Dusk sale goes to some Californian cuck who's working on an antifa pixelshit game with some fellow commies and likely antifa himself.

Dusk kinda looks like shit. I've played Quake in software mode back in the day and I don't remember the models looking so cheap looking.
Look at those shotguns from OP pic and compare to Quake's shotgun. It doesn't use many polys but they compensate for that in the texturing, Dusk's shotty looks like they just gave up and didn't put any effort in the gun looking anything more than a brown rectangle joined into a grey triangle.

It's great for horror. Old decayed wooden buildings and misty swamps are perfect. Set it post natural disaster and I'd buy it.

Imagine a horror game set right after a tsunami and you're a preacher who has to lay the dead to rest. Dealing with angry spirits, diseases from the corpses rotting. Everyone around you just lost family and doesn't want to hear your religious bullshit but they can't ignore the psychic reverberations from so many dead and slowly turn to you as a leader as shit gets weirder.

Another criticism for OP's pic is the texturing itself, it's very inconsistent. The wall and the white board uses detailed textures while the floor texture looks like a 8x8 picture being repeated all over the floor. The chair also has very low detailed texture and feels like it's floating in the air and it doesn't belong there, like someone poorly photoshopped that chair into the frame.
Either you make all textures detailed or make everything pixelized shit, don't make the two at the same time. This indicates some clear lack of art direction.

Although Quake had a very troubled development where different kinds of art style were combined together (medieval, techbase, lovecraftian, etc) they were consistent in quality.

Texas, specifically Austin I think, has a lot of tech companies moving in.

they underestimated the time it would take to polish the rest of the game and the developer's wife's son, and thought they could pass off the first episode as a pre-order bonus, but they eventually caved in and just went into Early Access with the game
