Steam popularized the notion of digital downloads. Before Steam, if you wanted to play games, you just went down to the store and bought it. You got a little crystal case with four CDs or so and you installed your game off of those. File sizes were compressed and you didn't have extra bloat.

Steam made people go from rejecting digital downloading to eating that shit up. It made all of this acceptable. It led to bloated file sizes and the death of physical copies. If you live in an area with shitty internet, that means you're fucked. It's virtually impossible to download 70GB of bullshit when you're on sub-1mb download speeds - interruptions will happen, files will get fucked, etc. And even if nothing goes wrong, you're still facing a download that takes weeks to complete.

This is all setting aside the DRM problems, and the fact that you literally turn over part of the ownership of your game to a third-party. The idea used to be that if you bought the game, you owned the game. You could do whatever you wanted with it - even share it to other people. Not any more.

Anyone who willingly chooses to buy games off of Steam in the current year, no matter what the price is, is not welcome here. They have zero respect for themselves as consumers, zero standards for producers, and are ignorant to their own impact on the market. When you have games available on GOG, or through piracy (which typically yields a better result anyways, considering re-packs), there is no reason to buy a game off of Steam.

I've bought more from a regular store and that won't change. The last time there was a steam sale I bought KOTOR1&2 in a bundle because it was 10 bucks and I had a paycheck, and the time before that it was the Valve game bundle for 20 so I could fuck around in Garry's Mod.

Most current games don't interest me if it's in the steam store, I only use the site for easy, lazy access to stuff I missed when I was a kid. I pay for convienance, nothing else. And those two packs are the only games I have on my PC, aside from one extra game, Riff Racer, because I thought it was cool at the time and it was like 5 bucks and I wanted to drift to vaporwave tracks and eurobeat.

And they're the ones who actually need physical disks. So long as their games come in physical form, most people are going to see them as a product being sold - not a service being rendered. Once physical dies on consoles, then you'll start seeing limited licenses where companies will force you to keep paying out a few bucks every year or so just to keep access to the games they already paid for.

On PC, at least if something happens to a game you paid for, you can fuck off and just pirate it to restore what you own - or just pirate in the first place.

Consoles don't have that luxury. Piracy has to wait until the system is cracked, and may involve complex (to the average console player) exploits or hardware soldered to your system - both of which will almost certainly cause you to be perma-banned and cut you off from multiplayer and those precious trophies/achievements the faggots are so keen on.

If you could only have one example of the idiocracy of console players - Achievements/Trophies would be it.
