Meanwhile, those who like cute and sexy characters stay quiet and don't aggressively demand such things be in the game. It's the same problem so many issues like this have, one side is always playing offense, while the other always plays defense. And as time goes on the attrition factor inevitably pushes the conversation and subject further and further towards the side of the offense. Until people start not only pushing back against this, but much more importantly, vocally advocating for the things they like to see it's inevitable that developers will adjust their products to appease the only people telling them what they want, or don't want, to see.

They already completely won on the Western developers front, and the only reason the Japanese developers are hanging on is because their own market is vocal about wanting cute and sexy girls. But as time goes on they will start actively censoring or changing the development of games that are designed to be worldwide successes to appease what they perceive as the Western markets demands. Until men stop being pussies and start actively pushing for attractive girls and sexy outfits, why would they do anything else?

This already happened with Star Ocean upon which they got death threats from Japanese players, it didn't do well globally or domestically and they reintroduced panties on their character models with the next series entry. Japan internal market and advertising structure is just not threatened the same way as western developers are by SJWs and since the global audience takes the back seat. The Japanese version had a scene with a brown girl in the bath censored to add a towel around her. As it's SAO, the only thing the games have going for them is waifus, so the Japanese weren't too happy to find out their delicious, brown waifu was censored because of foreigners.

The literal backstory reason she dresses up like that is because she has a cursed fragment of Soul Edge inside her that can't be removed so if she has sex she'll spread malfestation, and kids she has will undoubtely be fucked up demons beyond belief, in other words MORE OF THIS FUCKER due to the 9-month incubaton exposure.

The only reason she isn't sought after by Nightmare or his supporters to "spread malfestation" is because she's a magician of extreme skill. Her whipsword is a weapon created by her and is alive, can split apart to become whirling blades and basically nothing can really match her except Nightmare.

She's not going full blast in battle either, she's always holding back for her opponent's sake by keeping her shit in whip form instead of whirling bladed death or up against something like Nightmare where doing that would be suicidal considering how aggressive he is in close combat.

Her alternates tend to show her how she would be if she wasn't sexually repressed.

Looking into most characters' backstories in this game can get depressing.

Taki had to kill her father figure master, Sophitia had her kids taken hostage by Tira and is forced to fight for Nightmare midway through the series, Tira is mentally ill and was shunned from her village etc.

this is a stretch, but hell even Nightmare, the fucking main villain, when knocked out in a non-canon (but still done by the developers) story retains no memories of his past and despite his condition as Soul Edge he turns out to be nice without his memories, implying that Soul Edge itself had to go through a lot of shit to become what it is, and since it was revealed that these things were made by people like Algol these sentient swords have a HISTORY, and aren't some cosmic force.

I get it, but you know how these things work. Little by little they take steps into "progressing" other issues. Before you know it, they'll start demanding less nudity and banning hentai/lolis cause sexism.

It's not the first time this happened - Japan has its domestic groups doing that, and mangaka (notably the large amount of women in hentai circles) have been mocking them for decades. Probably one of the funniest things happening in Japan right now is how the forced labor shortage from severely limited immigration has done more to raise women's standing in the workplace over the past 10 years than feminism.

The only problem is that Bamco doesn't give the SC team much to work with, the SC team doesn't really know what to do with the wealth of potential at their disposal and everyone else just faps or REEEs at Ivy and Taki.

The "tragedy" thing kind of became cartoony in 5, Pyyrhas introduction is her being sold into slavery by Dampierre of all people Who I cannot take seriously at all looking exactly like the villain stereotype that ties girls to train tracks or snake oil salesman, then is engaged to the guy who buys her, then he's killed by Tira, you know the rest, and this is just the first game that she's in.

There's probably more, and probably even more prior to 5, but I can't think of them right now.

Nightmare is Siegfried but being controlled by Soul Edge up until the split in 4, where they became their own characters. Siegfried is one of the few people who can wield the Soul Calibur despite having murdered his own father and being a mercenary when he was younger. I don't quite get that but I assume its because unlike Cervantes, Siegfried is getting soul fucked into submission, and the entire reason he wanted the Soul Edge was to revive his dad and fix that fuck up. This was why Nightmare got the Soul Calibur as a weapon in some games. Of course they fucked with that in 4 and made him want to turn the world into crystal instead of being a guy on an eternal crusade against evil.
