The planet is in the same Solar system as ours.

The human is Ornstein, the chocobo is Smough.

Same reason they have a poster for an irish rock band: because it's a funny cultural reference they slipped into this quasi-modern game.

In Sephiroth's supernova attack, it seems to imply that FF7 takes place on Earth.

That's pretty clearly a F-14 but neither of the US squadrons who had the KD tail code flew Tomcats. VMAT-203 flew Harriers and Skyhawks and ATU-102 was a training squadron that flew T-28s.

It also implies that he destroys half the solar system

Yes.

But there's only three continents. How can it be Earth?

I'm led to believe that the Cetra were aliens who migrated to FFVII's planet from outer space and I think that F-14 actually belonged to them…

I think I just realized something. The world of part VII actually takes place on Earth further into the future than Warhammer 40k and the continental configuration is the result of plate tectonic shifts. The Cetra are us in 1997 AD because that fighter jet would have been impractical to use for interstellar travel.

And Blinda Butcher is also, secretly, an immortal Cetra who is centlllions of years old. Hojo didn't have to kidnap Aeris and crossbreed her with Red XIII if he had only realized this.

Yeah but Crisis Core turned that into a plot relevant play.

Wasn't there a fan theory that this was FF10's world but in the future?

Would this make planes Machina?

Part of me wants to blame the Souls Series for popularizing the idea that "every object is purposefully place to tell a story" but I know it wasn't the first game series to trigger that mentality in people. Nowadays, easter eggs simply aren't allowed to exist - if a dev chooses to stick a crashed F-14 in their game it can't be because one of the artists likes planes and wanted to stick one in for fun, it's because of some grand over-arching reddit fanfiction-tier game theory. It's like watching pseudo-intellectuals discussing Pollock - it's not just paint splashed on a canvas, it's a "deep and meaningful dissection of humanity".

It can't possibly be a machina from FFX because it has too many wedges and sharp angles. Hardly aerodynamic at all.

If a dev wanted to just put in a plane because he likes planes, he could have done it like the car ad FMV. Putting a crashed plane in a village built around excavating ancient fossils and artifacts can't not mean something.

Morrowind fans took the lore meme too far with the Chim bullshit since Reddit picks up and ruins everything.

you have clearly not achieved a state of CHIM.
