Air Raider has barely any power, defense, or maneuverability on his own. He just borrows it from something else or orders someone else, who does have firepower, around.

Being a tank is all about being trunk of the body, you gotta moove and think well or else the other members of the body won't do their work correctly. If you make one mistake about your aggros or your potitioning, the other members of your team will suffer greatly.

The actual weapons he carries pale in power to the fencer's, air bombings and artillery strikes aren't his power, and vehicles are power he just borrows, which he isn't necessarily going to be the one to use, anyway. Claiming the air raider has the most power is like saying a squad lead is strong because one of his men can lift 500 pounds. He's not strong, he just orders someone else's strength around.

The fencer is a knight and the air raider is a wizard. The knight is constsntly on the battle field taking attention off the wizard. When left alone, the wizards will swiftly change the tides of battle with elements he borrows from the cosmos. An air raider can be killed by a single red ant. And a fencer can have trouble taking out an heavy armored teleporter while an air raider can just look at it and let an air raid destroy it while he mows downs enemies with his mech.

Both are important to stopping the alien menace.

Middle ground is best because you have the most options. Medium armor with a regular shield is the superior path since you get to choose between dodging, blocking, and tanking based on what the situation presents which makes the combat more interesting. And since you're mediocre at all three, it also makes it so you can't steamroll certain parts, like if there's a slow enemy that would be trivial to dodge if you had light equipment it wouldn't be so trivial for you and therefore more fun.

I hate seeing the stereotype of a tank just being "You have to wear super heavy armor and use a sword or you're going to suck."
I've made characters in TTG's that surpass tanks despite looking like the complete opposite.
One of them is a nimble guy who carries two short swords, very light leather concealing very light plate and chainmail designed to be flexible for complicated moves. He dances, dodges, dips, dives, and leaps in crowds and barely gets cut while dishing and distracting while the rest of the party cleans shop, though he can be a real damage dealer when the times come.
Then then I had a couple ranged tanks. One of them a foul-tempered lycan who carried a shotgun and made the most vile taunts while blasting away, punching/throwing people who came too close, all while maneuvering around with a heavy-chain grappling hook which he'd sometime use to pull people in for a point-blank blast.
The second ranged tank was a minotaur with a great-shield and a shotgun (Wow sooo creative) with a wicked bayonet at the end of it. He was much the same except he got people's attention in different ways, would bash and stab people when they got in too close only to blast them away as soon as they were stuck in a grim form of intimidation.

Being a tank is specifically about taking damage, not dealing it. Your first character couldn't be considered a tank, as he was all about avoiding damage. He sounds more like a glass cannon. And, considering the EDF discussion and people posting military tanks, there's already been people posting "ranged" tanks.

Everything outside of actually shooting at tanks and getting shot by them, the Tiger was awful at. Germany also could have manufactured around 3 StuGs for every Tiger.

That's actually how we used to hunt prey back in the tribal days, humans have an assload of endurance and can walk and track for days, even with 100 pounds or more of armor or equipment on.

If we wanted and if we were at peak health from hunting, we could literally kill big game animals by chasing and scaring them to death without weapons simply because we can always outdo them on endurance.

Armor like this guy is not actually as impractical as it seems, aside from the ornament shoulder pads and overly large tasset which would prevent some movement, it could be used in battle. The design of those pieces is somewhat more ornamental but even that sort of armor is not as restrictive as you would think.

To clarify, at least in 3.5 and Pathfinder, Armor Class is a catch-all term which just means how hard you are to land a hit on. This includes dodging attacks, deflecting attacks with your armor or shield, and more nebulous things like how big your character is, how lucky they are, etc.
