A word of advice to anyone that hasn't played MW before: Try to get in at least an hour or two of training against the AI to see which mech fits you and to get used to it.
Solaris maps are best for that, imho.

People who know more about the subject than me tell me the Mechwarrior series went to shit, what happened? Just the normal casualisation with time?

From what I gather they're worth very little as kills, basically disposable cannon fodder. You can die ~4x as often as a heavier mech and if you kill one heavy fag you'll still come out on top in terms of team points.

Elementals are power armors meant to allow the pilot to stay in combat a bit longer if the mech is downed.
Remember, Battletech and by consequence, Mechwarrior are a Combined Arms wargame. You don't just fight with mechs like in MWO, it's an all out war, therefore tanks, troopers and a lot more is deployed.
Mechwarrior Living Legends is a good post-mechwarrior 4 game.

They're small, so pretty hard to hit for bigger mechs.
Give 'em jumpjets and battle claws, and then punch cockpits for maximum salt.

But the biggest contribution to its decline was the fact that the company that made it, FASA went bankrupt like three times. The liscene for the game and its rights bounced around during the late 90's and early 2000's. Hell, there was going to be a mmo of the game back in 1998! But that got canceled, fortunately since the people who were going to make it got bought by EA. So years later, mainly with Micro$ofts backing, we got MW3 and MW4. These days, Mechwarrior is "kinda" popular due to MWO. But at the same time PGI threw a hissy-fit and C&D'd every single fan game that was being made/released at the time. FORTUNATELY, MW:LL is still alive, sorta.

To make it simple, FASA went full Games Workshop, you never go full Games Workshop.

In MW4 Battlearmor actually can have it's uses in many cases a lot more so than in MWLL if you are playing Advanced Radar, since they are extremely hard to detect and even harder to hit. The problem is they are also hard to play against Mechs and you also need to know what map your on to take advantage of terrain.
I wouldn't worry too much about them unless we play a Battlearmor Map.

Be aware that machineguns are very good. Load lots of machineguns and lots of ammunition.

They are powerful, but they're also short ranged. If you manage to get the drop on a slower mech (not that hard) and can avoid getting picked off by another enemy (may be hard if enemy team coordinates well) then you can absolutely wreck shit until you run out of ammo.

At 900 rounds a ton, you can spend all evening shooting without getting to the bottom of your magazine.

And actually, they're medium ranged. They can engage at 400 meters, a mere 250 less than a large laser, and longer than even ER medium lasers by 100 meters.

As for approach, a simple LRM-5 can help you to dislodge and disrupt an enemy at long range.

Since everyone makes gauss and ER boats anyways, you get to walk in and wreck while everyone is trading long range fire for the whole match.

Unless everyone focus fires you, but being at long range isn't going to help you there.

Africa will continue to be entrenched in war and conflict for decades to come because it takes time to adapt to the differences between them. So because MW4 is an older game, it isn't updated with modern GPUs. Depending on the type of GPU you have will determine what its settings are. Because it didn't recognize what GPU I was using, my game kept crashing whenever I'd load a map. With this fix, I found I didn't need to run it in compatibility mode or make a shortcut, but I'm not sure about other systems. Keep in mind I'm basing this off of Windows 8.1, but I'm sure this works with other versions of Windows:

Basically they couldn't handle competition from free fan projects cause the fan projects were better quality. wine is a totally different error, it's bitching about getprocessordetails, which there's no error reports on i can find for wine, i think it's internal to mw4. wineapp db says it should work fine so i don't know what the deal is. it doesn't even get to the point of bitching about GPU.

I've gotten living legends to work on wine fine, the performance is shit as usual but it's playable, even on integrated.

Yeah, I've had this problem for months. There's only one solution:
sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/

You have to use dxwnd to force the game into using Direct X 9.

Now drag MW4Mercs.exe into DXwnd

Click OK and double click on MW4Mercs.exe from within DXwnd and it should now run. Set your desired resolution by editing the options.ini in your mech4 mercs directory. Let me know if that works, remember to always be running dxwnd in administrator.

i've played alot of MWLL, your going to have zero problems getting it going on windows, it's easy to get going on linux/wine, and there's no gameranger, it's all ingame.

Holla Forums played MW LL when it came out of hibernation and there were no issues. Honestly would have been a better pick than MW4, the only thing it doesn't have is your own customization of mechs but there are so many variants that it really isn't needed.

MWLL is a Crysis mod. If Crysis runs on your machine, so does MWLL.

MW LL pretty much runs on the Crysis 1 engine, hardware limitation shouldn't be an issue. I haven't tried playing with you guys yet but when I tried playing MW4 a few week ago it found multiple ways to shit itself on the two versions of the game I tried. I guess I'll try the one in the OP but I m pretty sure it's gonna give similar results.

Between the crahes on start up when picking 1920*1080, with XP SP2 compatibility, with and without admin mode, the game launching in 800x600 but only on my second monitor and then crashing when going into action, yeah, MW4 is a pain. But hey, it works for some people, so I guess have fun lads.

It doesn't allow you to add parameters to an .exe, nor does it allow you to use a custom .exe that has in-built parameters.
Meaning if you need to add a bunch of parameters to get a game to run, like it occasionally happens with old games, you're hosed.

Also Bots are using Benis Mechs.

The biggest problem with UAC20s is that you lose half your damage to a location if you wiggle your reticle at all during the firing animation. LBX20s dump the damage right into the location with one shot, while the UAC20 requires you to stay focused on the hitbox you're aiming for, for the full 2 bursts it fires.

Of course, the LBX is supposed to spread damage a bit but I find that if you're doing it right damage spread is minimal, whereas UAC requires that facetime (but if you manage it, it's guaranteed to hit that location in complete)

Clearly anything other than the largest gauss weapon is unacceptable.

The biggest problem with UAC20s is that if you want to fit 4 of them you need to take off all your armor.

Personal favorite is Highlander with Gauss and Heavy Gauss. Pew pew motherfuckers.

MWLL has no mechlab but it has about 5 or 6 variants of almost every mech/vehicle so you're bound to find something you like. It also has a LOT less mechs than MW4 but to compensate it has aircraft and vehicles. And of course everything is extremely pretty because it's on the Cryengine.

I'd actually be up for MWO with anons just to find out exactly how bad it is. From what I hear it's unpolished as fuck and desperate for your monies but the gameplay is solid.
