Their capabilities have grown significantly since then, and while their effects aren't 'just as good' they are now 'good enough' as evidenced by Wolf Warrior 2 and its fellow travelers. You can't become a megahit just by tossing some CGI at them anymore, and without that advantage they're almost always going to prefer local productions with themes, values, and storylines more relevant to them than anything some random American Jewish guy is capable of providing. For years now local films have been dominating their box office, and that will continue. Western studios are chasing after something which has already moved on.
