Doom 3

Let's talk about this game. I know lots of people really hate it, but I think it's actually gotten better with age. Horror walking simulators are dime a dozen these days. I'd be surprised to see a modern game with Doom 3's atmosphere also have such solid shooting mechanics. Sure, the environments are samey as fuck and tend to drag on, but it's still a decent game.

Decent, yes, but that's all it is. It's not even remarkable in the horror themed slow paced FPS category. Shit, nuPrey is better than it.

Doom 3 was extremely well received at release, it's only the fags who wanted Doom/Doom2 with a visual overhaul who were pissed.

It was not. It was a huge disappointment to the hardcore Doom audience and the normalfag audience was furious about the flashlight and whined about it for years.

Nah, normalfags loved Doom 3.

So was Bioshock Shitfinite.
Bloggers paid to give high scores aren't indicative of the quality of a game.

it was annoying how many people complained about the darkness and flashlight. they were intended to be clumsy and frustrating like survival horror games where you don't have perfect control of things at all times. BFG and all those flashlight mods killed the great atmosphere.

The one flaw I'd say is that there shouldn't even be a sprint button. it was meant to be played at a slow pace where you're dreading every hallway, but you can just sprint really fast and nothing spooks you anymore.

But Bioshock Infinite is a good game, and is a fantastic allegory for the West and the inevitable result of non-white migration.

So?
Normalfaggots will love anything out of brand loyalty

Average game tech demo with a decent atmosphere
Weapons all feel like shit with some exceptions, shotgun is weaksauce, level design is cramped and shitty, Imps screeching is fucking awful and makes me want to kill myself, sections that are scripted so you take damage and givingyou the illusion that you could have avoided it which is such a shitty game design I have no idea what they were smoking.

Doom 3 is fucking awful and even NuDoom is better than it despite also being an average game and nowehere near the OGs.
Doom 3 is an overhyped piece of shit in a time where Carmack was obviously tired of vidya and wanted to to go full tech and pretty much all of the creative folk from American to Romero were gone.

You're adorably stupid, but we're going to need to have you put down.

That's the problem. Doom 1 and 2 were legendary but Doom 3 is merely "a decent game". It's a totally forgettable disappointment that doesn't hold a candle to the first two.

I see you weren't born yet in 2004

Were the enemies were all supposed to be grey too?
Was the whole game shit on purpose?

...

So the assertion that most people had a problem with it is false. See for an example of the type of revisionism going on.

Heh.

Oh child, you're precious.

Time to go back to reddit.

Fair enough, but I though OP was mentioning that lots of people here hate it.
But you're completely right, normalfags ate that shit up and I still remember all the hype created with Activisions money.

It's nice you have a boner for the fountain of mediocrity that is Doom 3, user, but you shouldn't pretend it was ever considered good.

I'll agree that most of Holla Forums appears to have a problem with it, though I question how much of that is from people who have actually played the game and didn't enjoy it, versus uninformed anons parroting our vocal doomfag minority, with some "normalfags enjoyed it, so it's shit" sprinkled in.

I think it was between my 2nd and 3rd years at college when Project Offset was still a thing, I remember some guy building a PC specifically to make sure it ran Doom 3 as high as possible. Prey was the better of the two games running on that engine, tbqh.

Most people vocalizing it actually played it, no doubt.
The average age of people that post here and Dooms 3 release fits perfectly.

Doom 3 is a hot mess
still better than Halo 2

The gameplay just wasn't terribly exciting. And as far as the horror elements go, the whole "enter an area, noise/light changes, enemies spawn" got old really fast. I played till you first have to go outside and the oxygen counter appears and dropped the game shortly after because I was bored.
It wasn't horrible, but nothing special either.

They bit into it but they spit it out. Hype can sell things but it can't make people like things. Much like Diablo 3, it had great sales and ✡critical acclaim✡ but was severely disappointing and they shelved the whole series. Generally if something is actually a hit, you don't just walk away from it.

I doubt they've played it for any length of time, with how non-specific the criticism always is.
FEAR is the better "horror shooter" just by nature of having better gunplay, but the level design isn't any better, and the level variety is worse. I'd put Doom 3 on par with (original) Prey, which was a solid 8/10.

If you were expecting the gameplay to be as fast as Doom/Doom2, I can definitely see how someone wouldn't find it boring. Before it was released, a lot of the marketing/previews for it played up the horror aspect, so that's what I went into the experience expecting, and I wasn't disappointed.

...

It's way better than I thought it would be, since everyone always goes out of their way to shit on it really hard. The level layout, although way more linear compared to 1 and 2 is really well done, every room feels unique and memorable, it's very easy to remember where everything is/where to go. The lighting is absolutely fantastic, it sets the mood so perfectly, I've stopped quite a few times just to sit there and admire it, this is a 13 year old game by the way. The encounter design is pretty good for the most part, it doesn't have ridiculous enemy counts, but that was really only a thing in DOOM 2 and Slaughtermaps. It makes up for it by making the enemies take more damage, which gives it more of a Quake type feel which I really like, it also makes the enemies feel more intimidating.

I didn't mind checking the PDA since I went into the game with the mindset of playing a more slower paced action horror game instead of 3D DOOM 2 and I felt it did a good job of getting me more immersed. Having to switch to the flashlight didn't seem like much of an issue either, having to choose between sight and being offensively prepared made things really interesting, and checking an enemies position then wildly firing into the dark was fun and tense. The monster closets and ambushes are only a problem if you play with a controller or suck at FPS in general, you have a mouse so you should be able to reliably 180 in a split second. Enemy type variety is great and put to really good use, but they do have a few flaws. They teleport in way too slow, its extremely easy to just walk up and blast the fuck out of them before they can do anything.

Weapons sound great and feel satisfying to use, the game also encourages you to switch it up constantly, though the shotgun does still see more use than others unfortunately. I'd say it does deserve the title of DOOM, if they got rid of the PDA, bumped up the movement speed and opened the levels up a bit more it really wouldn't feel that different from playing 1. Also I played with pm_walkspeed 300 and used the sprint for my walk key lol.

Doom 3 is a fucking mess
Its on par with Doom 3 but was actually used to the games design favour
No and the OG Prey isn't an 8/10 either its maybe a 7
All of the ID Tech 4 games are average as shit filled with the same grim glossy bullshit cramped corridors, cramped linear level design and enemy attack patterns.
They don't know what they want to be and are stuck in this mediocre limbo of old and modern design while F.E.A.R knows exactly what it is.

Post discarded

Doom 3 is the prime example of Carmack's dumbassery in video game design. He basically ripped off System Shock 2 without having any clue of what made it interesting. What he took from SS2 was the cramped dark corridors, weightless gunplay, very few enemies, and voice message. The inventory management and RPG aspects were left out.

Therefore, what we got with Doom 3 is the worst of both worlds. It didn't have the frantic action of classic Doom, and neither it had the survival adventure of System Shock 2.

Only the guns with rare ammo such as plasma rifle and minigun were satisfying to use, plus the chainsaw. The basic guns feel weak as hell.

It would be satifying to use if the enemies didn't take 6 rounds to die with it

It looks and sounds great nevertheless.

The impact it has on enmies is shit and doesn't even faze them,, and the shooting sound is fucking shit.

The pistol and the machinegun sounded weak, but that was intentional. Starting pistol should sound always weak because that accurately represents it as well as incentivizes you to search for more powerful weapons. Machinegun sounds weak to contrast with the chaingun and make that gun feel even more powerful and satisfying.

Aim for the head, user. The only bullet sponges are bosses.
Well yeah, it's a horror game. It's like a Doom themed, more linear System Shock 2.
A handful do (Commandos in particular), but most don't. Not being able to outrun every enemy puts pressure on the player to quickly dispatch them. This is a good thing.
Has about as much variety as every other FPS ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Nitpick. You're supposed to feel isolated and hopeless.
Just like Doom :^)

Did Carmack really have all that much to do with the game design aspect of it? By that point it seems like he was completely focused on engine development.

Doom 3's gunplay mechanics in general is unresponsive shit. But still, that gun deserves to be in a better game.

I'm not expecting a blaring sound effect, but it has to be solid. Duke 3D's pistol for example, or the assault rifle in Aliens movies, not loud but satisfying.

It's more a criticism on the lack of damage response from the enemies.

Well, Carmack surely had no idea how to make a horror game.

SS2 was fun because it had inventory management and other RPG aspects rather than just a straight up shooter.

I don't know, but Rage's design choice was as stupid as Doom 3 so I suppose both are made by the same guy.

Stop calling this game horror for christs sake, having no lights and and having zombies doesn't make it fucking horror. HL2 is more horror than this and it's simply not horror.

Not many people cared about Doom 3 and it also was a very heavy game for the average PC of the time. Also Half-Life 2 was released around the same time. Before launch it was somewhat hyped though.

Aim for the head, user
Still bulletsponges, shotgun kills zombies only at point blank in the head.
There sno fucking excuse for that, it makes FarCry Trigens look good.
So is F.E.A.R
Nice shitpost
Now go play Turok
Fair enough
Isolated Marines dying on the other side of the chatter with no direct communication is not isolating and depressing now?
And if its that was so important for them then why are the faggot scientist and Marine in the game then?
Very funny fellow redditor, you might want to give an actual argument instead of ironic shitposting with lies.

I'm pretty sure Carmack was the one that made id turn Quake into a boring sci-fi shooter with Quake 2 and forced Romero to abandon his fantasy rpg idea for quake so I would say so

this is difficult when weapon accuracy is shit
as a general rule, horror games have to actually be scary to be a horror game. if it's a fusion of a horror-fps game but it's not actually scary, it's just an fps game with REALLY shitty movement
not an argument
hello reddit

at the very least he realizes the quake 1 aesthetic is objectively superior because he has stated he wants to do a quake reboot in the style of quake 1

You mean "wanted".

I loved it. Probably one of the better survival horror fps games. Lot better than nudoom imo.

git gud

Video games aren't scary, the horror genre doesn't exist.

Quake 4 is what Doom 3 should have been, more to the point like a traditional fps, not that shitty horror game that no one wanted.

brb reinstalling.
I honestly liked how you had buddies in this game going through fucking horror-cyborg alien bases.
The vehicle sections can suck cocks tho.

I'm betting Doom 3 would run better on here than 4, but my original memory of the game was rather pedestrian. I might give it a go again if I have spare cash. 4 runs like dogshit on here and this is a relatively new PC.

look at mr. badass here.

I honestly don't get the appeal of this game. Just as boring as Doom 3 if not worse. At least Doom 3 had some nice aesthetics (e.g. everything related to Hell) while Quake 4 was as generic as every other sci-fi shooter, the only memorable part about it was that masochistic scene. Fucking Alpha Prime was more fun to play.

As said, it was quite bland and generic except for the first-person dismemberment scene (which, by the way, would be quite interesting to experience in VR).
Prey was more interesting since they actually tried to add new things to the engine, like portals, gravity effects and body horror, while Quake 4 just had generic shooter + body horror.
had bland

It's a decent FPS, but a terrible Doom game. By that I mean that it's not what people who had played the previous games expected at all. I still like it and I think it's impressive on a technical level considering when it was made, but gameplay > graphics and the encounters really aren't interesting or varied until about the halfway point. And even then combat feels slow.

Good game, only faggots have a problem with it. Because they're faggots and can't git gud.

Kill yourself.

Holla Forumseddit hates everything. Nobody gives a fuck what Holla Forums thinks, and for good reason. If developers catered to Holla Forums it would be nothing but nintendo games, weebshit, weeb porn shit, and sanic.

Carmack id a tech guy, nigger. He does engine work. He's not the developer or designer. You're retarded.

Carmack is not a game designer. He is purely a software programmer.

i loved doom 3 when i played it back then. i kinda hated how you need to choose between a light source or a weapon. but now after experiencing the BFG edition and seeing how some maps are broken/skippable because you have a nipple lights and not to worry about monsters suprizing you in the dark because you're always ready with your weapon out. it made me wish there was an option to change to having a flashlight as an item rather than always use armor nipple lights.

also playing it in VR is one of the best expierences ever, beat the whole game in VR no problem. its far much better than the teleporting only doom 16 vr

That's how I know you haven't played the game. Considering that it kills most enemies in one shot.

He's a designer and was the director for quake 3

Doom 3 is a massive piece of shit

Nope. Carmack is an engine guy.

Great post >>>/reddit/

FTFY

John has always been the lead programmer and not much else.
Actually educate yourself before making yourself look like a dumbass.

Doom 3 was a remake of the original Doom. All the way up to release, that's the drum everyone at iD was banging.

but then the expasion came and said "lol hell on earth never happened, that engineer closed the portal that suppose to teleport demons to earth." i loved the expansion even when it was weird at most parts and never really get to fight UAC CEO demon hybrid thing.

That's because Id thought it was a good idea to make the shotguns spread outright abysmal. IIRC, you could fire 2 - 3 feet away from a zombie and have pellets miss. If you mod it to have a realistic/decent spray pattern then it could pretty much carry you through most of the game.

Isn't he the final boss?

It already does, you just need to know how to fucking aim.

the sound engine is different in the BFG edition of Doom 3, which makes the guns sound different. You're a shitter so I know you haven't touched the original version. The reason why your plasma shots don't faze enemies is because it's a projectile weapon and you're shit at predicting enemy movements so 90% of your shots miss.

Blatent misinformation. I booted up doom 3 and killed every single zombie and imp with one shotgun blast each, all body shots, at varying distances, some either deliberately aiming off to the side or the floor and yet I still kill them. What you're complaining about is that you can't aim at all and you don't know what spread is.

That doesn't disprove my point, the majority of the enemies in the game still get killed in one shotgun blast. Doesn't matter that they're weaker enemies. Would you expect stronger enemies to be weak? Retard. Also you don't even need to come close to headshotting them to kill in one hit. The shotgun in doom 3 is about as powerful as the super shotgun from doom 2.

i must have amnesia because HE is the final boss in the expansion. maybe i played the lost mission in VR and thought it was the expansion or someshit

Thats what pisses me off the most
After seeing how shitty shotguns had become I though to myself "fuck Doom 3 will surely fix this, they made great Shotguns with the first two games" but nope, close range piece of shit again like most mid 00s shooters.

Good fucking luck, you'll be dead before you're even in range, but I guess since this is Reddits pre teens first shooter they all played it on the easiest difficulty as it was mean to be played to get any kind of unmodded satisfaction.

Doable, but not recommended.
Maybe, if you get the drop on them.
Only tentacle variety is possible, and that's only if you have health and armor to spare. The chaingunners are pretty much rocket launcher territory.

commandos are easy, just duck their first charge attack they always use and pump them full of buck with the shot gun, two or three shots is enough while cocademons are just simple dodging. the soldiers sometimes come to you for an easy 1 hit shotgun to the face. those minigun commandos can fuck right off though

When did I say you had to use the shotgun on every enemy in the game?

Yes, top tier game design there

You're also a shitty liar Dood 3 shotgun spread makes NuDooms one look good.

Doom 3 is a boring mess. Don't try and be a hipster faggot by liking this sad excuse for a game. It takes boring corridor shooter to an entire new level.

commando health: 170
Shotgun damage: 182 (364 headshot)

The situation you described did not happen, you simply can't aim.

Who are you quoting? The only person who has posted this is you.

I didn't actually comment on the spread of the shotgun.

I was one of those guys who were hooked on the original doom games and utterly disappointed by doom3.

Yes, I was impressed by the new game engine and the great graphics, but that soon wore off when I realized that the gameplay of the doom series was gone. No more mowing down hoards of zombies and minor demons. Everything is a bullet sponge (that shit began with Quake, iirc), everything is so goddamn dark you can't see shit. Just about every box or locker has an imp hiding inside it. The jump-scares are predictable and annoying. The monster intro cutscenes are annoying and add nothing to the game, and other things I've forgotten since because it's been a while since I played it.

TL;DR: Doom3 is a game that could have been great, but due to poor design choices was merely meh at best, and repetitive and annoying at worst.

Imo ID Software makes really good game engines with great visuals an atmospheres, but they aren't very good at the game design. Rage is another example of this; absolutely beautiful, but when the visual awe fades, you're left with a mechanical and uninspired game.

Nuprey is a shitty System Shock clone.

Hes right though
Its better than Doom 3

In this day and age, that is the very definition of horror; a black screen and hoards of sprinting zombies.

Good at creating tense scenarios and fairly good at surprising you the first time through. The horror is a little diminished compared to what could be, but mostly because the gameplay enables action and reaction instead of bogging you down
Interestingly, Doom 3 is a faster moving game than D44M

I remember back in the day really liking Quake 4 over Doom 3 and thinking that the latter should be more like the former.

Almost ten years later i decided to replay both games, and somehow Doom 3 ended up feeling kinda refreshing (this was a couple of years before nuDoom was even announced), and while it's nowhere near as frenetic as the classic games, i still had a good time with it.

Quake 4 on the other hand felt horribly dated and formulaic, the game has it's good moments but they are buried with tons of cutscenes, mediocre vehicle sections, and even walk simulator sections in-between the main levels, Doom 3 on the other hand, once the hell invasion begins, it remains consistent almost all the time, there are cutscenes in between the gameplay but they are very short and skippable (seriously, i really wish you could do the same with Quake 4's walking sections).

There are better horror-themed FPS games like FEAR that make Doom 3 look mediocre, but by it's own merits i think it's a rather soild shooter, the only problems i have with it are the weapon sounds (they sounded way better on the Alpha when Trent Reznor was working on the sound design for the game), and the fact you can't always run because you get tired.

Nah, it doesn't hamfist a social message and try to copy System Shock straight off. And it's way more horrifying while introducing different mechanics than NuPrey. NuPrey just makes me mad, just like Dishonored being a shitty Thief-copy without being able to capture what made Thief truly special.
