>>138867042the balrog only destroyed his physical shell dumdum
Gandalf is a humble fellow and would intentionally die due to some divine plan of Eru or something. He wouldn't fuck up a good guy like Harry.
>>138867088>the balrog only destroyed his physical bodyHuh... That's what killing usually means.
He would destroy both of them.
>>138867042it's not exactly fair to say he got killed- his spirit left his body and goes to talk to God/Eru, Eru decides since he's the only one of the Istari (the five wizards are angels god sent to guide men, saruman and radagast are two of the others) who's actually doing his job, he'll let him use more of his power this time around. So he sends his spirit back to his body which is still on top of the mountain (people apparently get confused by the movie, he chases the balrog all the way to the top of the mountains then kills him) where gwaihir, the king eagle, takes him to lothlorien. they give him his new robes and staff, tell him he just missed the fellowship, so he decides that since Frodo and Sam are doing their own thing, he'll go find the three hunters and help them to rally the rest of Middle-Earthso it's more like he has an out of body experience than actually dies, but either way 'gandalf' is the angelic spirit, not merely the physical form taken
>"Harry, your wand is broken">wand explodes taking Harry's entire arm with it

>>138867453You better shut your fucking mouth Ornella.
>>138867428no they help out a lot, part of the thing people miss is they aren't all-powerful. they can be killed pretty easily with arrows, and they can't carry people very far- when gwaihir saves gandalf from orthanc, he can barely carry him over to edoras, he has to get a horse (where he gets shadowfax) for the rest of the waythe few times they do pop up are about the most they can do to help, saving people in very desperate situations or killing the enemies they can (battle of five armies, nazgul/fell beasts)
>>138866141It's not apparent to movie watchers, but Gandalf and Saruman aren't old men with magical powers. They're basically archangels sent by the gods the universe to help the lower races organize against evil. But they're prevented from using much of their real power in the mortal world. This is why Gandalf was so afraid to be offered the ring--if it took hold of him he'd prison rape Saruon and then enslave the world for the ring's use in his place. The god races in the Lord of the Rings world hate actually intervening in IRL problems, but when they do someone sneezes and a continent disappears. Now that I type that I wonder how much magic Gandalf could actually use in the mortal world vs Harry. Is Harry actually able to use more tricks vs a depowered Gandalf?
was Gandalf ever young or was he just assigned a body of an old man that no longer ages any further? are non-elves even aware of him being an immortal being?
>>138866846Yes he's an angel
Is it ever explained exactly how Gandalf fought the Balrog? Like, did he do it within the limits imposed on him in Middle Earth, or did he go full super saiyan? Did he kill it physically or mentally?
>>138867856they always had the bodies of old men, so men would listen to their advice. I don't think anyone other than elves know he's an angel, other than balrogs (who are fallen angels). Humans etc prob just figure he's a wizard and that's that, they live for a long time
>>138867856>was Gandalf ever young or was he just assigned a body of an old man that no longer ages any further?he got sent over on a ship after the war of the last alliance, his body is deceptive in that it appears to be an old man, but he manages feats of strength and durability far beyond it. are non-elves even aware of him being an immortal being?no. I mean, sauron and other valar/maiar were because they are too, but that's it
>>138866141Gandalf would just cast himself out of the dullest franchise in the history of movie franchises. Seriously each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.>a-at least the books were good though"No!" The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.
Holy shit, I always thought this was some bluepilled wokeshit that Jackson stuffed into the movie for (((brownie points))) but I skimmed the books and it's in there too. Was Tolkien a proto-tumblrina or what? How did this garbage fly in the 1950s?

Ignoring the fact they're both top lads and wouldn't fight eachother. We never really see Gandalf at full power. Is he powerful enough to block/deflect a Harry Potter killing curse? Can't he just blow Harry or his Wand up with a tap of his staff? Magic works completely different in HP and LOTR. Bad thread. A better thread would be about a buddy wizard-cop movie starring those two.
>>138872239It was a time before garbage anime made everything edgy and cringe.
>>138866141Gandalf is not humannot even close
In LOTR, Gandalf is basically an angel (the word in the lore is "Maiar", but it's essentially the same thing), as old as the universe itself. He, Saruman, and the other wizards are on the same "level" in terms of Tolkien's hierarchy as Sauron, the entire War of the Ring is very much Gandalf vs Sauron. Gandalf vs any mortal, or really anything lower on the totem pole than him, isn't a remotely fair fight. The Balrog is able to almost "kill" him because it's also one of the Maiar.>>138873057>A better thread would be about a buddy wizard-cop movie starring those two.Would it be set in England or in Middle-Earth?
>>138873410If the wizards are so goddamn wise and powerful, why does Saruman turn into Hitler, Radagast doesn't do shit, and the two blue wizards literally vanish?
>>138873410Gandalf would probably be too OP for England, Harry could probably handle himself in Middle Earth decently well provided he doesn't run into a Balrog or a native Wizard
>>138873473Saruman knows that fighting against Sauron is a folly, so he tries to make his own ring to have a chanceto get time he pretends to be on Sauron side and contacts him by palantir, which isn't good for mental health
>>138873473The Maiar are wise and powerful but they can be corrupted. Sauron himself is one of the Maiar, he turned evil way back in the beginning and followed Melkor. They're also capable of being selfish and/or dicks (hence the Blue Wizards).
>>138873410>Would it be set in England or in Middle-Earth?England. Kind of like Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell.
Why was Denethor nerfed so hard in the movies? In the books he battled wills with Sauron daily so he could use a palantir to scope out the rest of the middle earth. The reason he was so fucked up was because a lifetime of fighting the dark lord's mental power had broken his spirit.
>>138873843Probably time restrictions. It's the same way that Boromir kind of comes across as an impatient asshole in the theatrical release if you haven't read the books and know just how long Gondor has been fighting.

>>138873568Saruman may have been in the wrong in hindsight but he reasonably brought up a valid argument.Nobody was anticipating a couple of midgets and a crackhead to actually save the world.
>>138874112>Saruman may have been in the wrong in hindsight but he reasonably brought up a valid argument. He really didn't. Saruman has been around since the world was created, he's well aware what happened to Sauron's old boss, who was way more powerful than Sauron. The other Valar kicked his ass and sent him to the Phantom Zone. He's also well aware of what happened to the Numenorians, Aragorn's ancestors, who were so powerful they beat Sauron with barely a fight and then tried to invade Valinor. The result was pic related.Tolkien was super-Catholic, so it makes sense in his worldview, but Saruman and Sauron are basically both fallen angels who side with the devil (Melkor/Morgoth) despite knowing full well that they're going to lose eventually.

>>138874756It probably would have just corrupted the balrog into serving Sauron sooner or later.>>138874825>Gandalf the white actually failed to beat him, that's how strong Sauron is.That was a deleted scene that contradicts everything in the books and Tolkien's own letters so I think we can discount it as non-canon bullshit.
>>138874767The Nazgul were men who Sauron tainted with his Power, their strength is tied to his. As the movies progress, Sauron gets stronger, so the Ringwraiths get stronger.
>>138872239It's fiction, you mongoloid. How do you expect it to sound out of context?
>>138871850This. Horcruxes basically just gave him multiple lifes. Like a cat just kill it enough times and it's gone.
>>138869109What would he use though?
>>138868742People in the potter universe have little deeper understanding of their magic though. It’s why they continually get btfo by things like “old magic” like the love spell HPs mom put on him by sacrificing her life for his. Even voldy doesn’t really understand it or know how to defeat it. All the magic in HP has to be read from a book and used formulaically. Gandalf wrecks Harry no doubt, a more interesting question is Gandalf the grey vs Dumblefag.
>>138868239Being obsessed with politics is a fucking mental illness holy shit
>>138875022>Gandalf wrecks Harry no doubt, a more interesting question is Gandalf the grey vs Dumblefag.I think Gandalf still wrecks Dumbledore, but Dumbledore is able to understand why he's getting his ass kicked. As opposed to 99% of wizards who would be like "wait why is that pinecone a lightning bolt grenade he doesn't even have a wand this is against the rules"
>>138875022Gandalf wouldn't necessarily lose a deathmatch but he could fail at fulfilling his purpose. You get to Gandalf by killing his loved ones.
>>138875140Dumbledore would get that while he's capable of wielding magic, Gandalf *is* magic.
>>138875140>>138875166But Gandalf in the human world wouldn't be allowed to go super saiyan, whereas Dumbledore would.Wait, I'm 37, have a professional job, and a girlfriend, and I'm debating fantasy wizard power levels on 4chan. Goddammit moot.
name one spell Gandalf uses other than the blinding light from 2 and talking to a moth
>>138874686>>138874767In the movie he nearly rocks Gandalf’s shit, but is that really accurate to the books? I thought supposedly Gandalf was exponentially more powerful than the witch king due to Gandalf being a Maiar
>>138875320telling the moria balrog that he shall not pass which spares the fellowship and neither of them end up passing that bridge
