The point is that operations are far easier to handle. Calculations are smoother. You waste less time on conversions. It's the same reason why you use Kelvins over Celcius and Farenheit when you do scientific calculations. And let's not get started on reaching sizes like nanometers? First one is dated, but still interesting. Second game is a classic from the golden age of ps1 RPGs. Third game has a retarded magic system and one if the stupidest endings in gaming before ME3 happened, retroactively hurting the entire series. SO4 has some good ideas and a nice send up to the vibe of Star Trek, but is ruined by some annoying characters and the protagonist becoming a retarded emo in the middle. The gameplay difficulty curve is also all over the place. SO5 was just mediocre in every way except for that costume of that one witch.

Play the first two. Not the remakes, the originals. Use an undub for 2 unless you want to be violently struck by voice acting so bad it because a meme. The stories are basically JRPG IN SPAAAAAAACE with a dose of Star Trek.

The story of 3 was so bad that 4 and 5 were both made as prequels so they wouldn't have to address the shitstorm. They ended up with terrible stories anyway.

Blue Sphere is 2.5 and is okay (gameplay focused dungeon exploration with the cast of 2). Till the End of Time is 3. You'll actually have an enjoyable time for a while with 3. Then the disc change metaphorically shits over literally everything.

Here's a quick summary. Keep in mind the gameplay's fairly solid; the combat is fast and combo driven, equipment is extremely customizable, item creation has a patent system, there are side areas you never need to enter but have cool shit, and there's a huge in-game achievement set with mechanical benefits for unlocking them.

The story: Your dad tampered with your genes to encode magical symbols into them. This gives you PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWER, but pisses off aliens in a higher dimension so they glass the planet you're on. You escape and team up with a rag tag team of medieval planet screwheads and teched up humans and aliens, including two girls with similar gene mods. Escalation occurs while you're fucking around on fantasy planet and the dimensional aliens get serious. Earth is destroyed, and scientists on Luna tell you to use the time gate from Star Ocean 1 to get to 4D Space where the aliens live to fuck them up. Disc change.

The entire universe is an MMORPG for fuckheads in 4D Space to play. You're an NPC, and the universe-threatening crises of Star Ocean 1 and 2 was just endgame content for the previous expansions. The villainous head programmer/CEO is trying to bugfix his game by nuking fucking everything and your allies are lower programmers who want to make the game open source or something. After a lot of pretty much useless fighting, the villain shuts down the servers, but the other programmers punch him in the dick and start a private legacy server. The end.

I should not have to explain why this sucks, but there are retards that try to defend it by comparing it to much better stories involving MMO characters coming to life, such as .hack and Digital Devil Saga, so I fell the need to point out that .hack was about parts of an MMO gaining sapience and fucking the real world in ways they shouldn't be able to and DDS' MMO was a testbed for combat AI that were imaged from real people.

I jumped in at 4. It was okay, but I also had no expectations. 3 has been spoiled for me. I remember trying it as a kid and getting pissed you could die from 0MP or something like that.

I honestly enjoyed 5 more than 2 and 4, but then, I only played the PSP remakes of 1 & 2 - and 2 didn't really differentiate it's mechanics, it was just like SO1 but with more unlikable characters and a more outlandish story. 3 was ok to point, and that point being the moment you realize that it's literally all just a video game inside a video game. 4 was just a boring slog with a few decent characters and more terrible than usual VA. Gameplay was ok for a SO game though. Probably it's only saving grace.

5 had boring characters, but none of them being particularly offensively bad like Mericle, Lymle, or Welch. The story was a lot more grounded and didn't go completely off the rails - so it's more like SO1 in that regard, which I liked. Gameplay was pretty garbage though, and easily broken.

Honestly, I have no idea why I continue to play them. At least I can say that I only ever bought SO3, and that's only because I had no idea what SO was at the time aside from SO2 PSX promo materials and fucking around with a poorly translated romhack of SO1 for the SNES.

There's potential there, but it's consistently unrealized.

If you want broken spammy ARPG combat, you'd be much better off with Tales of Berseria. At least there you get some cuter waifus and a fairly decent story.
