It's time to vote, although we all know the result already.

So good they had to put denuvo on it to keep people from pirating a broken port.

Look, it was fine, but not even close to being worth a game of the year. that's how I can describe most games ever, though
Anyway, best game right here.

Officially it's probably gonna be Zelda for most if not all websites and journos. But my vote goes to NieR too even if it has a lot of things i don't like, but so far is the least disappointing game for me. Other good games, Cuphead or Sonicmania

casting my vote for A Hat in Time

is the year THAT bad?

Yes, user, sadly.
Pretty much a list of adequate games would just be Nioh, Nier, Cuphead, Snake Pass, Hat in Time unfinished in my opinion but other anons liked it , Odyssey and Mania.

normalfag nominees include BotW, Resident Evil 7, H:ZD, Wolfenstein II, a bunch of yearly release garbage and PUBG.
A pretty shit year, just as the last few were as well.

i actually playing it in coop with my brother and having fun, i vote for that one.

Get royally fucked weeb goon console faggots.
MASTER RACE

are you admitting you are a nigger who only cares about sex because Nier is fun regardless of the high quality posterior.

I'm torn between Cuphead and Odyssey

Go ask reddit to help you decided! :D

based on thread votes so far. I voted Zelda. Mario probably deserves it more tho

Hello snake pass dev, please stop shilling your game

...

...

My personal GOTY is Divinity Original Sin 2 since i had the most fun with it this year.
My personal TOP 5 goes like this:
1. Divinity Original Sin 2
2. Mario Odyssey
3. Sonic Mania
4. Cuphead
5. A Hat in Time
Elex is close runner up, but that game needed a lot of work to be perfect.

only one answer

I think it is (you) who are from reddit kiddo. everyone knows Nioh 仁王 is GOTY

...

Divinity OS was great too but Nier did have a greater emotional impact on me so I vote for it.

Yeah about that, Nioh is the jap version of a cucked game, while in the west they would put a nigger as the protagonist, japs do it with a white guy

Games are accurately weighted and compared to decide which one had the most merits and relative impact over gaming culture

The most recent popular game wins

If it counts, Yakuza 0. If not, then Nioh. I also really liked Gravity Rush 2, though I wouldn't quite call it my GOTY.

To be fair he was a real person:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Adams_(sailor)
Though in Nioh, he's Irish rather than English.
Yasuke (an African samurai and servant to Oda Nobunaga) is also in the game.

🤔 relly maks you think

Better than the average shit most GOTY thread posters list.

Hollow knight is GOTY.

I know that, I was just making a joke.

Well when you put it that way. I wonder why sleepy eyes love hollywood so much.

I'll just go through the list of games that I'd nominate
Great aesthetics and sound, solid gameplay, and the hacker girl is a qt
Bit lacking in longevity compared to other isometric shooters I've played, but dammit I had fun.
The only arguably AAA game on this list, the gameplay works well enough that it doesn't derail everything else, and the everything else is great.
It's been too damn long since we got a Metal Slug game of any kind, let alone one that was any good.
Like Cuphead, but for the metroidvania genre.
>Acceleration of Suguri 2
I want to believe FBF will finish translating it before 2018 rolls around

You should check out the newest update, it adds a New Game+ which overhauls all the arena fights to add more enemies, new enemies, new weapons, and all kinds of shit to make it more challenging. It definitely is worth a second playthrough now.

It still doesn't quite compare to Brigador's freelance mode, or Helldivers with freinds.

We sure do.

came to post this as well.

Fucking jesuits. They're the very reason that Japan ended up coming down so hard on Christianity.

Good. I'm glad Japan didn't get turned into the fucking Philippines.

Nagasaki was the center of Japanese Catholicism which is why (((They))) bombed it into smithereens. (((Jesuits))) have worked to subvert the Church because it is the only institution that that genuenly historically opposed the Synagogue of Satan. Modern Japan is now controlled by the USA and the United States is a puppet state of Israel. The anti-christian meme is encouraged by ZOG. They love it when people LARP as Lutherans, Evangelicals and Pagans or any other brand of Heresy because it only enabled them to take more power from the Catholic Church which is not essentially entirely demoralized and subverted. But if you think for a moment that the Church and the ZoG are one and the same then you are clearly still blue pilled on the JQ. Germany under Pagan & Lutheranism used to love the Jews prior to being betrayed during WW1. Catholic nations historically did not tolerate Jewry and was founded on criticism of the Kabbalism & Talmudism of the Pharisees and Sadducees. They even had laws that

Cuphead
I hate that some anons think it's a reddit choice because it's a really fun game
t. oldfag who grew up playing contra hard corps, alien soldier and gunstar heroes

Strong contender right here but I'm a sucker for any game with wrench-heavy combat

The usual. Low effort "rage" videos against lootboxes. Low effort movie reviews and trailer reactions. Low effort game reviews as well. This time he's doing it more regularly but he's also got his fat neckbeard friend to do rapidfire reviews between his own.

He gave Cuphead a 10/10, even though he showed on stream how much he sucked with his partner playing that it makes DSP's playthrough like a master speedrun. I'm not saying he didn't complete Cuphead because it isn't really that hard. I'm not seeing proof that proves he even beat it and only gave it a 10/10 because of mass opinion which I can describe for most of his reviews.

Nioh.
I also vote for Fuku for the best girl of the year.

...

Die
Divinity OS 2, Nioh, and Cuphead are really the only games worth playing this year.

It is a damn good game, for sure. Too bad Nintendo remade Metroid 2 instead of this one. I like Samus Returns okay, and I really liked how they added the Ridley fight at the end (despite how it alters the lore a little bit) just because it was a blast, but you can see where the gameboy's limitations affected the game design.

Anyway, this year's goty for me is probably NieR:A. I liked what I saw of Nioh but never got around to playing it.

What I usually do is compile a list of GameS of the Year. Must plays that anyone interested in the hobby shouldnt miss out on. some many different tastes and so many different kinds of games, I can never have just one GOTY.

Here's mine, and everyone add to the list!

These games were genuine fun and made me enjoy myself, fuck whoever says I am a normalfag weeb even though were on a cambodian imageboard and I was only talking about the games that I enjoyed this year.

Two of them not on your list would be

I'd have nier automata, mario odyssey, sonic mania, wonder boy the dragons trap, yakuza 0 and yakuza kiwami, persona 5, nioh, gravity rush 2, it's been such a good year

All strong contenders.
DOS2 has a feminist act though.

I liked Divinity Original Sin 2 the most so far.

As for GOTY shit I dunno, Elex was the only game half worth playing that I've finished so far this year but I don't think it deserves it.

Nioh is comparable to dark souls.

Only if you have limited brain function.

darksouls is just a meme game anyways

...

This is a Good Post.

These threads are always fucking garbage and everyone always fellates the same shit including AAA casual garbagw.

The fact that these are being listed as GOTY proves exactly what I'm saying.

No. Having a stamina bar is about where the similarities start and end.
Dark souls doesn't have upgrade trees or points, and has moves tied to the weapon rather than independent of it. And very few things have stat reqs in nioh, where as everything in DS does.
Not really. In ds most spells are damage, but nioh focuses on debuffs and buffs.
kinda.
this is the only one that really fits.

user please stop pretending like the Souls influence and mechanics aren't there.
Its like ignoring Might&Magic influence in Kings Field.

...

Items are not like souls, unless you're referring to the fact it's in a white ball before you pick it up.
No, it's far more linear. Like DS3 maybe, but not the first one. Almost nothing loops back, all alternate routes are either dead ends or shortcuts.
But souls does have jumping
Being dark is exclusive to souls? And Nioh is far less lonely and dad felling, it's more actiony and hot blooded.
Souls doesn't have ki, or projectiles that are worth a damn, or combos beyond mash one button.
So having equippable armor is exclusive to souls now? that is just so fucking vague, it's like saying skyrim has dark souls armor.
What part of it is? You hit people and avoid being hit? The lock on? Plenty of other games have that.
They function far differently. In DS the fog is a one way door, in nioh it's the same as having the enemy be stationary and have reduced vision.
Again, no. In DS you have a million damage spells and can use them exclusively. In nioh you only have 3 projectiles of each type for a long fucking time and even then, they don't do amazing damage to anything not particularly weak to them. It's just an action game, only thing it stole from dark souls is enemies respawning, the blood stains, and the stamina bar kind of.

I didn't want to clog it up with rereleases like Vanquish and Rez, but I still think Bayonetta is a better game than any of the new releases I've played this year.

Surely you go- I mean, guys aren't forgetting about this masterpiece!

todd posting is not funny.

Sure isn't.

...

todd figured out he will never make a good game that wasn't fed my the modding community so he just release he greatest achievement to all platforms and still get beat out by netflix

probally the best list ive seen so far tbqh.
i should get around to playing rain world

BotW is alright, but it's got some problems that makes it really difficult playing it more than once.
People wanna moan about items breaking or the rain. But the real problem is that 90% of the game is the overworld. The rest is shrines that all look and feel identical, and the divine beasts which feels like they took those special dungeons in the DS games, that you return to often and just spread them out to different areas. And a personal pet peeve of mine is the lack of ZELDA style music.

At this point I'm having doubts whatever is in the DLC is going to fix that.

Are you reposting or are you actually current year user?

The reason these threads are garbage is because they are pointless for anything other than datamining.

Also,
I seriously hope

How dumb does Konami feel now for not giving us a new Contra game?

Probably not very because they don't give a shit/aren't paying attention, but they fucking well should, goddamit.

I didn't really like BotW, but the music was one of the things I did like. It wasn't overbearing, it was more atmospheric and fit what was going on at the time. Wind Waker's sailing theme is fine in isolation, but hearing it constantly in the game gets annoying, and it's why I don't like that song to this day. And since BotW has an expected playtime of 100 hours, any song that tried to be "epic" for that long would just be obnoxious.

random piano music ayy lmao

I agree, it just plays at the right time and in the right atmosphere, hearing it outside the game doesn't do it any favors, but while in game its pure bliss.

Zelda is really good at having both atmospheric music and the more pronounced kind stuff with a good melody. You'd usually see it split between Overworld/Dungeons. But like with the other things I was pointing out, I feel like BotW tilts one way a bit too far. It's mostly just atmospheric stuff, and outside of just deliberately recreating/arranging older songs like Zora's Domain… it lacks that Zelda charm in the music. (I think that has more to do with picking an Animal Crossing composer to do most of the work though.)

Twilight Princess was probably the last big 3D Zelda that hit that aspect perfectly for me.

thanks user it almost slipped under my radar.

...

if it wasn't random piano music it was miyazaki music. i can sit here and go through the entire soundtrack and probably find only a hand full of decent songs that are probably just melodies from previous games.

BotW has by far the weakest soundtrack compared to the rest of the zelda games.

Speak for yourself OP.

It seems you posted the bait picture by mistake, but don't worry, OP. Here's what you wanted to post.
No need to thank me.

music was bland, without essence or zelda-like elements (without pandering to nostalgia), could have worked for any other game without zelda in the title
and that sentence works for every aspect of the game

That one's an older version.

Thanks lad

2017 gotta be pretty shitty year if main GOTY contender is bland mediocre game with the single selling point being sex.

Its a dark souls like game stop getting your panties in a twist you retarded faggot.

Also my vote is for Nioh, the story in Nier is great but the combat is lackluster.

Not as bland as goy of the year nominations of normalfag community.

No fuck off.

Are you just playing retard or are you serious?

Who would have known

Are you?

Those are really the only distinctions you can make? I think you're proving his point.

Would you like me to keep going?

Robo Recall is fun as fuck, so is Onward, but with onward you need a good amount of space and at least 3 tracking cameras since there is no way to rotate except in real life.

Does Trails in the Sky 3rd count as a 2017 game? I know it was originally released in 2007, but we didn't get it until this year.

I'd like you to provide a clearer differentiation if you want me to believe you

The Surge has a shitton of distinctions from Souls and its still a Souls inspired game.
Why this resistance agaonst something this obvious that even Koei and Team Ninja have admitted countless times?

What is this autistic shit?
I could understand it when the 12 Sonygger shills we have had to boast about it being so different you couldn't get it anywhere else but the PS4, but now this is no longer console war autism, its pure autism.

What the fuck? I thought Holla Forums was against this corporate pandering bullshit. GOTY is whatever the fuck you want it to be regardless of the preferred platform. The show is an absolute cringefest annually that insults the collective intelligence of gamers everywhere. It's made for companies to fellate each other while they push their personal politics down our throats in pursuit of financial gain like the kikes they are.

Seriously, what the actual FUCK is wrong with you cunts championing this pointless bullshit every year? Play whatever the fuck you want and leave it at that.

Those are small mechanics the chunk of the core mechanics are inspired from Souls games.
Why are you in denial, why in your mind is this such an awful thing?
Item loot, being able to see the stamina bar of enemies and mission based doesn't change

Why don't you make a case that they're the same. Every argument making it a soulslike beyond getting your Amrita back from the bloodstain is a general feature of action games.

What are you even on about?

Again I think you have retardation of the brain.

...

Realistically, only Persona 5 or Odyssey should win. The rest are normalfag cancer that boil down to:

...

PUBG better not fucking win, there are so many things wrong with this game. Like not being able to see shit, and not being able to understand where shots are coming from. And if you bring up any fault in the game normalfags just spew "get good" because there game is a master piece and anything wrong with it is fine.

I'll never understand Holla Forums's obsession with that banal POS game.

Wew.

Nioh plays vastly different to souls due to those small mechanics. Dark Souls combat isn't particularily challenging. You just need patience.

PUBG winning would be the ultimate middle finger that would cause an existential crisis in Sonyggers and Nintendrones everywhere.

On the otherhand, it could lead to the official cancellation of the Game Awards show as the immense negative backlash would be a win for everyone.

I hope you understand my obsession with these numbers

Are you implying that none of the nominess deserve GOTY?

Wait, what the fuck does Holla Forums have against Persona 5?

Oh here it is, the reason you want to seperate it from Souls.
You're no diffrent then the GITGUD cancer back in 2011-2012

Yeah, checkpoints in Nioh are totally like Resident Evil or Cry of Fear checkpoints.

Cease and desist you goddamned autist

It changes the design a little bit but the same goddamn components are.
Same with Nion, just nick enemies health and be done with it.

Maybe Odyssey, but I haven't played it and that shit is so overhyped and shilled I'm fairly sure theres a catch.

Nice get, but midna is hot despite the gayme.

Post Boogie

Stance switching and ki management does make the combat harder than souls games.

I agree with Ki management
Stance just gives you more options instead of tying your fucking atatck animations to weapons like in Souls.

*Attack animation speed

Nah, nioh has been way easier so far. You get so many tools at your disposal, even with just melee, that you can really fucking dunk on most enemies.

I'll take it

My personal GOTY: the fan TL of Zero no kiseki.

Objective GOTY: PubG, can't deny the sales numbers or hype.

It counts if you want it to.

But TitS 3rd sold like 50k man. Can you imagine the audience response?

Are people still arguing autistically about whether Nioh is a souls-like game or not?
It clearly borrows several elements from those Fromsoft games but as an overall presentation it's quite different. Also it's my vote for best game of 2017 too.

I like Cuphead if for no other reason than how shitter shattered it made so many people. The fact that it was a good game and and had great golden age animation is frankly just a bonus at this point.
Snek was just plain comfy.

Best tot.

What a fucking shit thread.

My game of the year is Terranigma. Runner up is Second Sight on Gamecube. 2017 has had nothing but utter shit. weeb chimpout incoming

Got banned from SA again?

2017 was the year when nothing interesting came out. Last year was a phyrric victory and it's going to take atleast 2-3 years until we get decent actual games again.

?

God damn the shit taste on this board is incurable.

You can play Breast of the Wild on the WiiU too though.

Is A Hat in Mario actually good though?

Yea gee thanks. Thanks game is garbage anyway.

I think World of Final Fantasy is a decent contender for GoTY if we get a proper unpozzed translation. The FF/pokemon hybrid gameplay and lighthearted story was a fresh breath between the year of "deep" stories. Same reason why Cuphead is a solid contender for GoTY.

What's so good about it?

...

How are you supposed to play the game properly when all of the buttons are in Chinese?

u press da shoot nigga

What's she from?

Have you tried calling Golden Palace for instructions?

>Talking about MUSIC

People who are this stupid shouldn't post here let alone get dubs of that magnitude.

Some fucking master race.

I'd nominate Nex Machina as a GOTY because I believe it is a genuine 10/10 from a gameplay and presentation standpoint.

It is an arcade twin-stick shooter and is unbelievably solid, which comes to no surprise given that it was designed by the de facto creator of the twin-stick shooter genre, Eugene Jarvis. It's an arcade game as in it could be plopped right into an arcade hall. You got your shooting weapon, several subweapons for a little more adaptability, a dash which can be upgraded into a triple dash or a dash which explodes anything it comes into contact with, and your wits. It's pacing is Alien Soldier-tier, every thirty seconds you're thrown into a new and different hand-crafted arena, and the game never lets up. The arenas themselves are incredibly varied. They can range from flat open spaces with a certain arrangement of enemy emplacement firing lasers or bullets in static directions while mobile enemies try to chase you around, to minor obstacle courses where you're trying to get from point A to point B in order to keep up your human chain.

The scoring system is what makes the game feel damn good. Every arena has a certain amount of humans scattered around, and you're supposed to grab them all, but that's not all. You also need to maintain your 'human chain', which means that every six-eight or so seconds you need to grab a new human before your chain runs out and your chain can't reach its full potential, depriving you of some score. So what follow are some tricky strategies in order to draw out the human chain as long as possible, because if you grab all humans before you kill all enemies and can move on to the next arena, the chain will end prematurely. On top of that you want to keep one human safe so you can grab him as you're about to teleport to the next arena so you can start off the next arena with a full human chain bar.

So you want to abstain from picking up all humans immediately and space out grabbing them at the risk of messing up your chain. If you press the dash button at the right moment when you're about to teleport out of the arena, you will also receive a minor teleport exit score bonus. This seems like an entirely random thing to award the player for, but consider what I said before about abstaining from picking up humans until the very last second. In those last moments when you killed all the enemies and are about to teleport away, you're most likely going to dash towards the last human. And after each dash (or three dashes if you have Triple Dash), there is a minor cooldown. So on top of getting the last human at the last possible second for a full human chain bar, you also want to be able to dash at the last moment for that teleport exit bonus.

And you also want to grab all the SECRET humans on top of triggering the exit for the SECRET levels and grabbing the score multiplier bonuses before they expire, all as fast as possible for the highest possible time bonus. On top of that there's also Visitors to contend with, which are a straight line of enemies who move in a telegraphed line and need to be all killed before they disappear if you want the best score. Then there's also Disruptors which are slightly tougher enemies of which there are five which can randomly spawn in five of the ten plus levels in a world, adding a degree of randomness to your run and forcing you to adapt on the fly so everything does not play out the same way each time. And at the end of each world, you get more bonuses for not dying, for not taking a hit, for your largest human chain, for finding all humans, for finding all secrets, For something with such seemingly simple gameplay, you will be doing loads of multitasking.

There's around 30 enemy types and all also play on many of the mechanics in some way. There's your basic swarming mooks, but also big guys going for the humans instead and threatening to steal them away from you. Some of the later ones will straight up throw humans at you if you fail to save them in time. Several projectile-based enemies will stand afar and shoot straight bullets, homing bullets, lasers you can through, purple lasers you CAN'T dash through, laser shockwaves, bullet spreads, pretty much anything you can think of. The first two boss fights are easy, but the later can get pretty nasty.

Presentation-wise it's excellent as well. The synthwave soundtrack really nails that 80's action hero feeling and fits the action on screen rather remarkably, and everything looks great as well, especially the level transitions give off a grand sense of scale as you see the world around you during the few moments when you are just flying to the next level. If you look at a gameplay video it might all seem incredibly overwhelming, but when you try it out for yourself, all objects of importance like enemies and enemy projectiles do manage to stand out sufficiently. All the particle effects make it look pretty as hell.

One consequence of cutting out all the fat in favor of dense non-stop action is that the game can feel rather short. However, this being an arcade game, everything is designed around you finishing the game without using continues, which may take hours of practice before you can pull that off. On top of that there's also Hero Mode which completely changes the enemy layout for all levels and adds suicide bullets to the mix. It seems like a simple generic pretty twin-stick shooter but it has a surprising amount of depth to it once you get down with it.

Unfortunately, this being an arcade-styled game which you can't really finish much like you would finish any other normal game and are expected to replay and git gud to get higher scores, nobody outside a niche of dedicated autists cares about Nex Machina, not even Holla Forums. It's kind of disheartening that most people even here only seem to care about the big-budget AAA releases and indie titles with a lot of hype behind them, if this thread is anything to go by. I'd hoped for all the grandstanding about having better taste in videogames than others that me shilling this game would pay off automatically, but I guess not. If you want to show off what kind of a patrician you are, you could at least give Nex Machina a shot.

Why? It was so boring I had to drop it – combat was mediocre at best and the game contained nothing else, just a big map full of nothing and MMO-tier fetch and kill quests

I've been interested in checking it out for sure, but I still haven't gotten around to it. I was going to pick it up in a sale recently but saw some pretty harsh user reviews about technical problems with the PC version. Know anything about the PS4 version?

Some people are mentioning that they can't start up Nex Machina on the PC, the issue seems rather random so you might as well pirate it to see if it doesn't crash. Nex Machina is best played with a gamepad anyways, so if you don't have one for PC, the PS4 version is a safe bet.

STILL THE KING BAYBEEEEEEEEEEEE

What, it's poisonous and constantly reaching/falling?

PUBG is releasing on xbone next month and will be on PS4 next year. It's also chink garbage

How did Horizon make a list? Who rode who's dick?

Is it better than the first one?

Being better than shit doesn't mean much, user.

I only started playing bloodborne this year, so that.

Adding the Diablo II style loot to Ninja Gaiden was cool and all but really they should have just kept the jump in

I vote for Nier: Automata. Speaking of Nier, Gameinformer posted an interview with Yoko Taro - there's a bit that mentions the *original* concept of the DoD1 final battle (you know the one, the rhythm game of hell). It's… quite something to say the least:

In Drakengard 1, obviously you may know at the end of the game you come down into Shinjuku and then there's a rhythm-game which is the final part of the game. My original proposal for that was something that the team shot down straight away. The idea was you had a giant Ayumi Hamasaki, a Japanese pop idol, come down from the sky and then you had a singing contest with her to decide the fate of the universe. And they said, "No, we can't do that," and that was shot down. A pop idol in America who's the equivalent of Ayumi Hamasaki… so basically, it'd be something like Britney Spears coming down and you being like, “Oh hey, Britney! Let’s fight!” That's the kind of thing that would have been.

Ayumi Hamasaki sang the opening for the first Tales of Xillia, if I remember correctly.

Yoko taro is a hack.
Hollow Knight is the true GOTY

It crashes every half hour without fail on PC, despite all attempted fixes. It’s something for consolefags to be smug about.

Why do you keep shilling this?
