Play the MapleGlobal server. It's a progressive server so patches come out slowly, currently in the Beta days before Orbis but Orbis will be soon. There's no p2w in the cash shop and there's no HP Washing or anything like that. They're planning to stop updates before 4th Job is released because 4th Job massively imbalances the set previous meta.

We don't really know yet, since it's progressive it'll be a while anyway. From what I loosely understand we'll be reaching Pianus and then after that who knows, maybe they'll try custom content or something. The point is to emulate classic MS point-for-point and so far it's going very well. The community's decent if a little bit on the small end for some base drop rates, but all it means is being Dexless is kinda pointless especially since it'll be a long time before we see Maple Weapons too.

It's even better. They perma-banned someone for cheating without concrete evidence. Then they banned his whole guild for not reporting him when they either didn't know he was cheating or were not even part of it. (The only evidence of association they have is Discord logs of people talking about it. That's it. I posted fake messages from Suho plenty of times back in July so the staff knows they can be faked.)
The guild is rightfully pissed because not only was the ban unjustified, but some of them donated and got jewed hard. A couple of them just got responses from mods telling them to fuck off. (This part was mentioned in the voice channel.)
Their Discord is a dumpster fire right now and the mods don't know what to do. They're just banning and deleting messages like crazy.

So to summarize, is this basically what happened?

Just go play on MapleLegends or MapleRoyals, they have been the most consistent and stable pre-bb servers for years. I'd suggest Legends because it has a more tight-knit community and people actually do fun shit together. Royals is all about leeching, everyone and their mom owns a lvl 200 Bishop, and the economy's inflation is through the roof.

Isn't the "virus" a false positive? All private servers show up as a trojan because of the way it works. They even tell you to temporarily disable AV when downloading and installing a private server, and then to allow an exception.

The client that can be downloaded now does have a keylogger in it, so panic throw it in the recycle bin and run any of the antiviruses that react to the executable.
