Quick question

How much time do you usually spend on the name screen?

however long it takes to punch in the defaults

I just use my real name if it's singleplayer game so no time at all. In online games I use names of characters from lesser known fantasy settings so it never takes me long. Sage for barely video games.

I just put names from some old ass songs at random.

I might do that next time.

I do that too araki-kun

As long as it takes to type asdf.

I was putting too much thoughts into those screens, so I started typing the first thing coming to my mind. My characters now have names like períscopolo, porolino, Palauterioso. pilipiriscopina, and so on.

Half a minute

Nothing at all, I type in the canon name if there is one, and if not, my first name.

If it's a single player game I mash the keyboard.
If it's a multiplayer game I spend a few hours on that screen because my autism won't let me have a shit nickname and I'm uncreative.

HERO in all caps or maybe funny font in the game lets you.

I took way too long to think of a name, so I started using some weird autistic rules: Names must be alliterative and last name must be the name of Phylum, Order, Family or Genus. So for example:

You should make comics for marvel

I put the canon name or a name given in alternative versions if they exist (In megaten I always use the name from the manga or movie). If that's not available, I either put my first name if it fits the setting, or I make up a name that's appropriate for the setting based off other names in the game.

waste of 20 minutes right there

I do almost the same thing, but with band member names

...

fuck you shill

the only correct answer to this thread is that you get some snacks and sit there for hours figuring out the coolest best name you can.

Offline/Online that allows people with the same name: a few seconds
Online that won't allow you to have the same name as someone else: from minutes to hours

it's happened too many times

...

It depends on how many characters I can put in the name. If it's only 4-6 characters I use the default/canon name, 7-12 characters I use names of members of bands or historical figures I like, and if a game lets you put really long first and last names, like Persona, I put something really long and goofy like Weird Al Yankovic.

Much longer than it should. I put a lot of thought into character names.

I just use some generic or most common name, like John or Ivan. My real name is rare-sh and i never going to use it in game. Or i go way.

truly the worst

...

...

whatever retarded name pops up in my head like Bussy, Titsen, Vagis, Benis

Usually leave it blank and then click on okay or end, it puts the default name in most of the time. That or whatever the main characters name is suppose to be. If it is online, I just use random names, nothing special.

What kind of fucked up flavor is that.

Crushed nuts

I’m pretty damn quick with thematically appropriate names, and I’m also good with shitty parody names, too. My character in Dragon’s Dogma? Dr. Agon. My nord character in Skyrim (don’t worry; I pirated both and only played when I was suicidal)? Bjorn Fjord.

I just name every thing Benis, unless it gets filtered, then Bepis.

...

I am an autist who goes to a search engine and loops up ancient greek names or some dumb shit like that and then I combine names with words until I find something I like. It takes way too long and isn't worth it, but whatever.

If I care enough, I'll put my name. Else its just Faggot. Online I just pick a random object, ram it through google translate, and use that.

Sometimes it works, other times you're running around in ancient rome with a modern japanese name.

AAA
THE BEST OF THE BEST.

It depends on the game.
In Zelda I usually just default to Link.
In the old Castlevanias I would just put the name of the Character. I almost unlocked Richter mode by accident.
In a game like Dark Souls, I pull names from old PC adventure games. I remember playing Dark Souls one to completion as Leoric and Dark Souls Three as Lazarus.
The only time I get really autistic with names is Persona and The Elder Scrolls, where I have to make a believable Japanese name for the former, or a lore friendly name for my chosen race in the latter.

My defaults are George Liquor and Cuntface Karen across all genres. No bully.

It's called a firewall, Windows by default does not allow programs to use networking and always asks if you want to add an exception.

A lot. Stupid amounts of time. I've created unimaginable failures of names, but it's worth it because occasionally I come up with one that's gold. My most recent success was "Bogby Jon Gonzo".

I always use the same name, or the default name if there is one.

Either way, stop spamming the catalog you blogposting niggers

...

Ever since I accidentally forgot to set a name on my Fallout character and ended up playing as vault dweller named None. I have just been naming my characters None unless there is a default name available.

I like rolling with another culture's version of John Doe when I get the chance.

In any text-heavy JRPG, it's entertaining to name your main character Jesus (or JESUS) and see how much it improves the story.

5 seconds while i enter my name or if it's a girl any girl name that comes to mind, i used to enter some supercool names when i was a teen, but i give a damn nowadays, and those times (and names) feel like cringe.

Or naming everyone after the villain.

Either default name or just AAA when there isn't any.

For the main character I either go with the default or my name.
But for ANYTHING else I do my best to make it "fit" in with the universe, or just have fun. But in either case, I still take an eternity.
And if it has a random name generator- god help me I will hammer that shit until it looks like it fits.
I tend to use a theme when nicknaming my Pokemon per game. Zelda enemy style prefixes and suffixes, tarot cards, and german/french are what I've used so far.

I call all my guys Asshat so not very long, character creation is where I chew up time, it's a pisser when you spend half an hour getting shit right only for the game to be crap though.

I use the same username for all my emails and profiles since I got it on Xbox Live. For singleplayer, I either look up what the cannon name is or use my first name. If I'm testing out a mod or game I use the name "Test". If I don't give a shit I'll use a name I find funny.

porn thread?

Fuck that noise, OP.

I name pokémons after dank memes, depending on their dex entry, overall design and/or significance in-game. For example, I would never fail to name caught Gravelers "MOTHERFUCK" back before GF censored the naming system, and that was, obviously, way before cuckchan made it a certified mememon™ in their silly romhack.

I always named my Abra Homer because he was yellow.

It gets pretty bad when you decide to nickname Pokemons, not easy, not even during a nuzlocke.

...

What do you mean? you completely forgot the name of the pokemon and only remember them by nickname?

I have a system but I'm not sharing it because it's mine. You fuckers can sit there stewing over names for all I care, I ain't letting you in on my sweet methods.

Exactly. Certain Pokémon I can name easily but I don't know all of them by looking.

I had a brother who could sit there for a good forty minutes to an hour deciding a name for his character.

I really don't want to bother. The story is probably nonexistent, too, if the first game was any indication. The names and portraits I can reuse, but it's now 3E so I have to redo everything with the creation.

You gotta beat 8 GYMs after all m8

I go with that.
I just come up with something appropriate that fits the game. Like Nite the black mage.
I always pick X as my trainer name. I got a shiny greninja once and the OT's name [Original Trainer] said "Dylan". I thought to myself, "what a gay name". So I picked "X" because it's gender neutral, and the X letter is easy to find in japanese versions of the game. For pokemon, I usually just name them whatever comes to mind. Like Grizelda the greninja, or Luna the absol.

Sometimes I just go with the default name, or I call myself Bison.
but at the moment since playing Dark Souls I'v grown to like the one I ended up using, That name being, Louie the Fuck. I just really like the idea of

That's fucking shite, and so is X. In fact every name you've come up with is shite.

Forget names, I need to choose what my lineage will be identified by

...

There are moments in your gaming life that you never forget. That was definitely one of them for me.

For japanese games I usually go with "Fug Yu". For most other games it's just default name or some incomprehensible string of profanities.

Checked. As for your question not too long. I do try to come up with clever, or funny names though. I cram master asia, jc denton, and big boss into any game I think is appropriate.

FF1 only allows for 4-letter character names, in case you didn't know. I just picked Nite because fuck it, I didn't wanna spend long selecting names.

In pokemon, I picked "X" because it's the most universal, and most gender neutral name I can think of. I use to go as "Red" [my old OT name] when trading online, but then I realized that english words are not that universal. What's "Red" to english players, is "Rouge" to the french, is "Rossa" to italians, is "Rote" to germans, is "Roja" to spaniards, and "赤" to the japanese.

Also, in the games, I also wanted the option to pick between being either a boy or a girl. Especially on diamond/pearl/platinum, where I wanna play as the girl and not some guy with a gay beret. So I can't pick an obviously male name for female characters, nor a female name for males. Forcing me to think of a gender neutral name that satisfies both genders.

I was playing pokemon x at the time, and so I just settled with X as my name. It fulfilled all the requirements imo: The japanese/english/french/italians/germans/spaniards/korean players All recognize the letter X (especially when 2 installments are titled "pokemon X" and y). And it's a name that fits well with both the boy and girl characters. (X-kun or X-chan, as the japanese versions like to call you.)

And now all of my pokemon (from gen 3, from gen 4, from gen 5, from gen 6, from gen 7) all share the same Original Trainer name: X

Almost no time at all. I have a name that I use for pretty much everything and it's almost never taken in online games. But if I have to come up with something different then fucking ages.

Either keep the default name (when it actually has an importance to the story) or switch to one of my nicknames.
nickname for every shiny I catch. I've caught and transferred shinies since Emerald. I have 8 boxes of them. I'm becoming a bit short on names.

man I didn't know my nintendo 64 and super nintendo were selling my information. That's a real eye opener

...

If the character has a canon name, I always just go with that

On Pokemon, if you type NOTHING on the name selection screen and just hit enter the game chooses a name for you, at least until Sun and Moon came out, I guess the PC has no canon name

Aggravatingly so when I don't pick the best option.

None because I use the same three letter gender neutral name in all my RPGs. Unless it's guild wars where last names exist, then I get autistic about making them all part of the same family.
