F Zero thread

X > GX > Original >> GBA games

I was stunned to find out yesterday that F-Zero X had an expansion on some CD console in Japan that added 12 tracks / 2 cups.

1. How do I play this?
2. Do the new tracks have staff ghosts?
3. Are the new tracks any good?
4. Is the expansion like Warcraft TFT (new content, gameplay mechanics, music etc, i.e. can't play game without it once you've tried it) or is is more like Final Doom (no new content beyond more levels with same textures).

X > GX

no

Don't get me wrong, I love GX. The game is fucking tight, has an awesome soundtrack and aesthetic plus story mode.

Something about X is just better to me though, maybe the simplistic visuals or presentation. The controls of X are also just so damn spot on and feels like a purer, more precise game to me. I've beaten all the staff ghosts on X and GX so I feel like I know what I'm talking about.

X isn't even better than Extreme-G. GX shits all over it.

I like both

I just prefer the SEGA aesthetic of GX

Appreciate everyone has a different opinion here. Can we focus on the main questions in the OP?

No, fuck you, google it nigger.

Oh, well I never played the expansion. So I wouldn't know, however you can probably emulate it.

Gameplay GX>X
Style X>GX

The thrash metal and edgy 90's comic book vibe seems so much more appropriate.

Maybe without the Mario Kart weapons.

And the sloppy framerate
And the shitty map display
And crappy boost mechanics
And poor controls
And low number of racers

Soundtrack is banging tho

F-Zero X has a pretty cool (also fucking hard) romhack, if anyone's interested.

X for best gameplay and music
GX for everything else
Original still kicks ass
GBA ones not that good

Come on man Extreme G (the first game on the Nintendo 64™ console) doesn't even actually work.

Reminder that even Nintendo thinks F-Zero is shit.

No, Nintendo knows Nintendo is shit and thus they know they can't do justice to the F-Zero series nowadays, that's why they left GX development to Sega

Nintendo knows Mario Kart sells more.

Still holding out hope for a Switch game. Nintendo needs one (1) more game for the 5 game rule to be complete.

F-Zero X and R4 are my goto "I don't really have anything in mind to play right now" racing games.

F-Zero X actually works very well on the Wii / Wii U as well. Some games don't, either due to weird graphical bugs or the controller just isn't right but I play F-Zero X all over the place. Something special about a regular ass N64 with a CRT though.

fuck youuuuuuuu

X is a timeless game. A big part of it is the music imo, it just has this presence to it. Really adds to the flavor. By far my favorite racer, I still play ut to this day. GX is also fantastic. In fact I just straight up like all the games, they range from solid it among the best ever made.

I really hope we get a sequel eventually, but I would actually be fine with F Zeros legacy remaining pure forever and simply carried on by Cap through smash as well.

Not a huge fan of the original. I appreciate that it was probably very cool at the time, but I like slopes on my tracks.

X WITH EXPANSION PAK > ALL COMBINED

Well, with F-Zero you get tracks made by slopes, so there's that at least.

Nintendo should just sell the IP to Sega at this point tbh. Sega has proven with GX that they're far better at making F-Zero games than Nintendo ever can.

It's also not like Nintendo has been doing much with the franchise since 2004, the year the last F-Zero installment came out. Nothing much besides making F-Zero cameos in other games such as Smash Bros or Mario Kart.

lol

I mean, I love the hell out of GX, but it really sucks, compared to X, when it comes to the art style and music.

Oh, and, as far as I know, you can't emulate the DD expansion. You'll need the actual hardware for the F-Zero expansion. I don't know much about the new tracks, but the expansion adds some extended music to the old tracks (and an actual Rainbow Road theme to Rainbow Road), and it comes with a track creator.

Forgot to add this to my last post.

The Casino Track in the game alone proves you wrong.

The Casino track is precisely what proves them right.

Because when I think of child friendly, I think of a Vegas Inspired Casino with a Giant Red Eyed Statue gazing down on a deadly track with the song "Shotgun Kiss" playing!

Nobody said anything about child friendly related to X or GX. If you think the only two extant settings in any media are "for kids" and R18-G, then you're more autistic than the average Holla Forumsirgin.

X had a very heavy metal aesthetic to it, from the character art to the actual music. GX went for a more typical future racer aesthetic, with a lot of electronic music and more vibrant art. Whereas X looks like it could be a Judge Dredd comic, GX looks closer to a standard shounen anime. One level with a darker atmosphere doesn't suddenly nullify the entire rest of the game.
