Modern western societies are losing this trait. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find communities that have any sort of cultural cohesion. They certainly still exist, but attempts are being made to "diversify" them. It's fairly obvious that this would have a detrimental effect on the mental well-being of the people living there.

Macro issues involve individuals but on different aspects to personal ones. Everything you're trying to run on about is dismantled when you realize that humanity wasn't formed around the US culture. If we don't have a nation we have groups that we can easily rely on. If our nation doesn't function, those groups usually do. How people perceive the importance of a nation will have differing effects. If I don't give a shit about national solidarity and I have a group of people who think the same then it obviously doesn't effect me does it?

Where in my post did I specify US culture? At what point did I talk about something that's unique to the United States? I'm talking in generic terms regarding societal cohesion. I'm arguing that having an ethnically and culturally unified state tends to promote safety and communal health, and that having an ethnically and culturally fragmented society places stress on people and acts as a contributing factor to degradation of mental health. This isn't to say that mental health problems can't exist in a unified society, or that a unified society would cure all mental health problems; I'm saying that fragmentation of society can contribute to issues like depression by alienating the populace from each other.
You are either purposefully misconstruing the points I'm making, or you need to to back to (or perhaps stay in?) school. Yes, the existence of smaller groups can provide a social outlet for people who feel ostracized from society, but that's hardly comparable to having the vast majority of your country's population sharing your cultural norms. Well it's a town not a nation. Simple. Fragmentation has effects on those who are invested in solidarity. If you don't have an investment in the concept of your nation then it's not a problem is it? I'd argue at that point that you've already checked out of society. You likely feel like you aren't represented by the society you live in. This is going to add stress to your life somehow. It may not express itself as clinical depression but if you were someone predisposed to that sort of issue then it could certainly exacerbate it. This goes back to my original point: humans inherently want to group themselves together, and they instinctively do this along ethnic lines. Denying them the right to do this can cause issues.
I think you may be confused about the strict political science definition for "nation":
I took your example of a town to be a community of people who were bound by similar cultural values, and who were separate from a larger entity. In this way it could be argued that the town itself exists as a small nation. If that nation were fragmented or reduced or displaced in favor of a foreign nation moving in, don't you think that's going to put stress on the members of that community? Don't you think that stress and discomfort could cause issues like depression to occur more often?
